Introduction
In Middle School, before taking a big test teachers would always hand out peppermint or a piece of gum. The purpose behind this seemed unclear. However, from further research their was interesting facts about peppermint candy and Big Red cinnamon flavored gum. Peppermint candy is made with the oil of peppermint, which is extracted from the peppermint plant. This is why the candy can have some of the same effects as the oil itself. People believe the brain effects associated with peppermint are related to the scent of the peppermint, rather than the ingestion of it.
Cinnamon is metabolized into sodium benzoate and eating cinnamon significantly elevates the level of sodium benzoate in your brain. Recent studies have shown that sodium benzoate helps with brain function and may prevent neurological disorders. It does this by creating a significant number of chemicals in the brain called neurotropic factors. These factors stimulate the birth of new neurons and encourage the survival of existing neurons. This greatly slows down degenerative diseases of the brain like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.
In fact, both peppermint and Big Red gum are said to increase a person’s alertness, motivation, and performance. They also lower fatigue, anxiety, and frustration. This helps the person focus better. Also, scents play an important part. The scent travels to the limbic system in your brain. This area affects your hormones and mood. Important parts of the limbic system are the hypothalamus, the amygdala, and hippocampus. The hypothalamus regulates hormones, the amygdala is responsible for emotion and the hippocampus is important for memory. All of these functions play a part while taking a test.

Discussion
From this experiment it was concluded that the hypothesis was correct. Big Red increased test scores for a majority of students. The background research supported the idea that it increases a person’s alertness, motivation, and performance. This helped the people focus better and raised the test scores. Also, the scents may have influenced the limbic system, which also contributed.
Even though the hypothesis was correct the experiment could be improved. If time had allowed longer tests could have been used. This would prove or disprove the idea that peppermint or Big Red would help aid with fatigue. Also, this test would be more realistic because most are not only two minutes long.
Children love candy. Known childhood favorites are Dum Dums and Jolly Ranchers, but who would expect a childhood favorite to harm a child? One calm day 6 year old Easton Newton was playing with toy cars when he opened a hard Jolly Rancher at his best friends desk. While his teacher was checking on another classroom, Easton began to choke and tried to cough his Jolly Rancher up, but couldn’t. Luckily, Shelby Labar, a classmate, immediately rushed to Easton’s side and used the heimlich maneuver they had practiced months before. Easton was now safe. Jolly Ranchers can easily get lodged in the throat of their consumers. Clearly, Dum Dums are the better candy because they are much safer to eat.
* It was almost impossible to tell when the Alka-Seltzer tablet had dissolved, each time the experiment was done. This was a huge problem for the experiment as this could have totally caused problems to the experiment. A special type of detector apparatus, which bleeped when the correct amount of Alka-Seltzer tablet dissolved, could improve this, each time the experiment was done.
While this study did not produce the result we wanted, we believe that we could use the information learned from this study and develop a study that would be more effective.
Instead of being focused on other people’s breath or one’s own, students can focus on the teacher or the assignment because chewing gum freshens breath. The key thing in tests is to remember what you need to do. Chewing gum improves pupils memory making the test a little easier to do. If students do not have as much anxiety, they can focus on class instead of worries about their future grades or a missing homework assignment. So, why shouldn’t students have gum in school? Gum has many qualities which will improve students quality in the
Going into details of the article, I realized that the necessary information needed to evaluate the experimental procedures were not included. However, when conducting an experiment, the independent and dependent variable are to be studied before giving a final conclusion.
This experiment was conducted to calculate the running movement and velocity of four people running in a straight line for 100 meters and compare them to the all-star Usain bolt. Usain bolt is the number one all-star ranking, the best and fastest runner ever. The things I could have improved on were that I didn’t really contribute that much to the experiment due to me being sick and non-present for the experiment itself. Things that I did well on were getting down all the results onto the Microsoft excel. The conclusions made from this experiment were that Usain blot is still faster than everyone else and the boys are still faster than the girls by a large amount.
“Researchers at Ohio State University conducted what they say is the most scientifically rigorous test of physical changes caused by smelling the popular scents — and came up with nothing,” says JoNel Aleccia (2008). So this theory explains that the oils and the scents of the oils only make you feel good as opposed to actually getting well, that the fact that these oils actually work is all in the head.
One can always try to minimize their effects as much as possible, but they will never stop to exist. One of the biggest limitations within this experiment was the sample size. While a sample of 12 children offers some data, the level of significance is somewhat low. A significant underlying factor was that the entire body of test subjects go to preschool. In preschool, children are taught how to be successful in their future careers as students; they are undeniably encouraged to delay gratification daily. I feel as though the room the study was conducted may have limited the study. There were no completely barren rooms within the school. All the rooms are thriving with graphics strewn about and color splashed upon every surface. I feel like the students would have been forced into looking at the marshmallow more if it would have been the most interesting object within the room. With all of this being said, in the future if I were to conduct a similar experiment, I would be sure to gather a more diverse subject pool. I would also like to use a whitewashed or otherwise mundane
You might guess it’s a custom dreamed up by a modern-day, real-life Willy Wonka, but people have been chewing gum, in various forms, since ancient times. There’s evidence that some northern Europeans were chewing birch bark tar 9,000 years ago, possibly for enjoyment as well as such medicinal purposes as relieving toothaches. The ancient Maya chewed a substance called chicle, derived from the sapodilla tree, as a way to quench thirst or fight hunger, according to “Chicle: The Chewing Gum of the Americas” by Jennifer P. Mathews. The Aztecs also used chicle and even had rules about its social acceptability. Only kids and single women were allowed to chew it in public, notes Mathews. Married women and widows could chew it privately to freshen their breath, while men could chew it in secret to clean their teeth.
Marijuana is a green, brown, or gray mixture of dried, shredded flowers and leaves of the hemp plant, Cannabis sativa. Marijuana is often called by street names such as pot, herb, weed, boom, Mary Jane, gangster, reefer, or chronic. There are more than 200 slang terms for marijuana.
When we chew gum, we are basically chewing rubber. Gum started out as latex sap from a tree (the sapodilla). The tree grew in Central America, and the sap we chewed was called chicle. Chicle has the same properties as rubber, because it doesn’t break down when we chew it. Later, after World War II, scientists found a way to create something called synthetic rubber. Synthetic rubber is still similar to chicle because it still doesn’t break down when you chew it, but it isn’t natural like chicle is. (How Stuff Works, 2000… April 1st)
Researchers today have discovered that frankincense is high in sesquiterpenes, which helps stimulate the limbic system of the brain (the center of emotions) as well as the hypothalamus, pineal and pituitary glands. The hypothalamus is the master gland of the human body, controlling the release of many hormones including thyroid and growth hormone. Frankincense is now being researched and used therapeutically in European hospitals and is being investigated for its ability to improve human growth hormone production.
If you were to walk down any busy street in today’s America, you would find that many people are chewing gum as they pass by. Men and women of all ages, races, and socioeconomic standings chew gum for a multitude of reasons. They may be chewing gum to kick an addiction like smoking or biting their fingernails, to freshen their breath, to just pass the time, or some people even find it helps them to focus on the task at hand. Gum is a staple in America’s society-it’s a 19 billion dollar industry in the U.S. alone with the average person chewing 280 sticks a year, (“Chewing Gum Statistics”)- but the way in which it became so may be much more fascinating than you think.

Aloe vera is very common, and has multiple purposes. People use aloe vera for healing sunburns and keeping their skin from peeling, or treat constipation if taken orally through the latex form. Cinnamon comes from a cassia tree and oils use the bark, leaves or twigs. Cinnamon is commonly used to help treat bronchitis. It can also be used as a dietary
