Children love candy. Known childhood favorites are Dum Dums and Jolly Ranchers, but who would expect a childhood favorite to harm a child? One calm day 6 year old Easton Newton was playing with toy cars when he opened a hard Jolly Rancher at his best friends desk. While his teacher was checking on another classroom, Easton began to choke and tried to cough his Jolly Rancher up, but couldn’t. Luckily, Shelby Labar, a classmate, immediately rushed to Easton’s side and used the heimlich maneuver they had practiced months before. Easton was now safe. Jolly Ranchers can easily get lodged in the throat of their consumers. Clearly, Dum Dums are the better candy because they are much safer to eat.

biodegradable stick attached to the Dum-Dum allows children to eat them much more safely than if it were not attached to a stick, which would propose a major choking hazard. Not only are the Dum- Dums safer but they last 13 minutes longer than Jolly Ranchers, which only last for 7 minutes in your mouth, and they contain less high fructose corn syrup, which is detrimental for you. Jolly Ranchers have even tried to outdo their competition by opening a branch of Jolly Ranchers lollipops.
These lollipops contain more calories, more sodium, and absolutely more high fructose corn syrup. This new brand has become no where near as popular as the family favorite Dum-Dums which have been around since 1906. Our world renowned Dum Dums contain no peanuts or tree nuts, which is excellent to the 3 million Americans with peanut allergies, no milk or eggs, no fish, and a large majority thank the fact that dum dums are wheat and gluten free. The 15 million people with food allergies can easily enjoy a majority of of dum dum flavors. After all, doctors always give you dum dums at the end of your appointment.
Jolly Ranchers also propose a dental hazard. NFL player Barry White for the Dallas Cowboys had to miss a whole day of mandatory training camp because he chipped his tooth on a Jolly Rancher and had to undergo an emergency root canal. Once you suck on a Jolly Rancher for a long time, the hard candy becomes very hard and starts to sharpen. Then, you cut your tongue on the hard candy. Abby, even cut her tongue, yesterday, on a jolly rancher. Not to mention that her teeth were also stained blue due to a blue raspberry jolly
rancher. Jolly Ranchers aren’t only dangerous because of choking hazards, but also due to the involvement with a particular teen drug. It’s a drug that mixes cough syrup, soft drinks such as Sprite or Mountain Dew, and Jolly Ranchers. This can be very dangerous for many teens and are influential to younger generations. The medicine contained in this mixture is effortlessly accessible to kids without their parents permission and is appealing to younger kids. The University of Texas conducted a poll which proved that 55% of students believe that overdosing cough medicine is not risky. Just one cup of this “Purple Drank” can be fatal. Some other dreadful symptoms are mild hallucinations, constipation, vomiting, lack of concentration and reduced breathing. Overdosing on this mixture can be catastrophic to a child’s health. We strongly condemn Jolly Ranchers. They must be boycotted and kept from children, so that they can no longer choke on these killer candies.
As a child I remember that I wanted many things I saw on T.V. like Carl's Jr, Lucky Charms, Mcdonald's, Gushers, ect… When eating these food products, as you get older it affects your health. A good advice we can take from Wendell Berry is “Eat responsibly.”
In Middle School, before taking a big test teachers would always hand out peppermint or a piece of gum. The purpose behind this seemed unclear. However, from further research their was interesting facts about peppermint candy and Big Red cinnamon flavored gum. Peppermint candy is made with the oil of peppermint, which is extracted from the peppermint plant. This is why the candy can have some of the same effects as the oil itself. People believe the brain effects associated with peppermint are related to the scent of the peppermint, rather than the ingestion of it.
...n potential death. What the FDA should do is support funding for more advertising, encouraging all citizens to be more aware with the potentially hazardous products they consume. I’m sure if people without food allergies were more aware of the potential harm their daily snack could cause to someone else, they would start to use a lot more caution.
Leave Hard Candy Alone. Sucking on a hard piece of candy sounds good, until you decide to take a bite. Sinking your teeth into something so hard can damage your teeth, causing them to break, crack and even chip. However, all hard candies are not high in sugar. Some candies are low in sugar, tastes great, and will do little or no damage to your enamel, if you can remember to brush.
They come in various colors and brands and are similar to a bear in shape.
Probably some of the most pleasurable and enjoyable memories of a person has to do with sweets. When thinking back to birthdays, there is always the memory of the wonderful cake that mother beautifully made and decorated with frosting and glazes. A typical night out with dad can be transformed into a magical evening with a trip to the ice cream parlor. The end of a fantastic Thanksgiving dinner turns heavenly when a hot apple pie is brought to the table and topped with delicious, melting vanilla ice cream. A good wedding is never complete without the cutting of the splendid multi-level wedding cake, when the happy new couple gets to playfully shove and smear cake and white frosting into each other’s smiling faces. Everyone knows that as a child, the only good part about going to the dentist is getting the candy bar at the end of the visit. Why do some people get sick after eating too much suger? Some people do not even know that the abuse of sugar can lead to negative effects on your body. There is something strangely enjoyable and resplendent about the consumption of sugar. Why is it that sugar is so deliciously enjoyable and at the same time a food product that has many negative affects on people’s health?
Marketers are often accused of marketing to children to gain higher profits. Young children are targeted because they usually do not know right from wrong. Many people have criticized McDonald’s for advertising the Happy Meal towards young children for higher profits. Some people consider it unethical because the Happy Meal is so unhealthy. However, McDonald’s has taken many initiatives to show that it is a corporation that does not manipulate children for profit and that they care for children. The Ronald McDonald House Charities organization was created by McDonalds in 1974 to help children in need. The organization believes that helping one child will go a long way, and they express their commitment in their vision statement, “We believe when you change a child’s life, you change a family’s, which can change a community and, ultimately, the world” (Ronald McDonald House Charity). McDonald’s also provides donations for many other children’s charities and has taken steps to improve the Happy Meals by providing healthier options. McDonalds works hard towards making children all ove...
Candy is a great way to add a little zing to a party or an event. For example, Milky Ways, Snickers, and fun dip are some fun and great things for a party. Although, Kit-Kats are the best candy to eat and enjoy. Kit-Kats are the best candy because of their amazing crunchy wafer, their hilarious commercials, and their spectacular chocolate.
Unfortunately, the material wasn’t strong enough and the bubble would break to easily. Also, the gum seemed wet or soggy. Walter E. Diemer was the first official creator of bubblegum. When he was in his 20’s, young Diemer worked for the Fleer Chewing Gum Company. Just for fun, he was trying out a new gum recipe when he created a totally new kind of gum, it was more flexible than normal chewing gum, and you could blow a bubble with it. Then, he lost the recipe, and it took him many months to figure it out again. (Rosenberg, 2017…October
So is going through the drive thru of your favorite fast food restaurant really cheaper than making a meal at home for your family? In today’s time it has become more relevant to get what is more convenient and cheapest regarding to food. People are less concerned with the health benefits, whether that means going by McDonalds for dinner than making a home cooked meal or eating junk food than a healthy alternative snack. People are doing what seems to be the most convenient and inexpensive route, but the problem is that Americans lack knowledge regarding junk food and real food which is interfering with their health. High amounts of processed foods are being consumed by Americans because they are tight budgeted and don’t have the time to cook
Sugar is found in a lot of foods these days. It is found naturally in fruits. It is added to a lot of processed foods. The high levels of sugar in American diets is definitely linked to increased risks for obesity and Type 2 diabetes. But, is all sugar bad and how much is too much?
America is one of the many countries with high obesity rates. Obesity is something that this country has been dealing with for many decades. Within the past few years, there has been an attempt by the government to regulate and control a few of the factors contributing to this problem, which are junk food and fast food. It is believed that these unhealthy choices are not only affecting Americans, but people all over the world. There is a debate on whether or not the government should place stronger regulatory rules on fast food, junk food, and beverage industries.
The food companies are similar to tobacco companies in many ways. Both of their products are addictive and unhealthy, and spend an abundant amount of money in advertising. It is easier to manipulate children's psychology, so they become the target for the companies. Brownell, a professor of psychology and public health from Yale University states," As a culture, we've become upset by the tobacco companies advertising to children, but we sit idly by while the food companies do the very same thing." (Moss 474). The advertisements are all over the internet, TV channels, billboards, etc. to tempt the children if they have not been yet tempted by the addictive taste of the silent killer. In addition to this, some companies give free toys with their products to appeal the children. This makes it harder for the parents to say no to their children. Companies do whatever it takes to make children persuade their parents into buying them.
America is facing a crisis because of eating habits. Six million adults are obese and three hundred thousand people die from obesity every year (Cody). There has been a sharp increase in the availability and consumption of junk food in recent years and this may have contributed to rising rates of obesity. Junk foods are defined as items that are high in energy content, fat, and/or sugar and low in nutrients. So from this we gain that junk foods are not just foods full of sugar, junk foods can be any foods that are bad for you. It can be anything from a piece of candy to processed food (such as canned food, ramen noodles, cookies, etc.).
Nowadays in United State, obesity is really a big problem. According to a report from Forbes in 2007, 74.1 percent of people who are over 15 years old in America are considered overweight, which ranked number nine in the world (Streib). According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly 34 percent of Americans are obese (Salahi and Meaney). Among all the reasons why people get fat, eating unhealthy food constitutes a high proportion. Junk food, such as candies and fries, provides more fats, sugar, salt, and calories, which could easily lead to obesity. Why people eat fast food instead of healthy food? One main reason is that healthy food is 1.5 dollar expensive than fast food (Dwyer). As I am a government officer, I suggest government to increase the tax rate of unhealthy food and decrease the tax rate of healthy food to improve our eating standard and reduce obesity.
