What is bovine tuberculosis and what causes it?
• Bovine tuberculosis (TB) is a chronic and debilitating disease of animals caused by bacteria called Mycobacterium bovis, (M.bovis) which is closely resembled to the avian and human tuberculosis causing bacteria. This disease is characterized by causing general state of illness, coughing and death.
• Cattle and buffalo are the main hosts of the bacteria.
• The name Tuberculosis derives from ‘tubercles’, which are present in the lymph nodes of affected animals.
• TB is a significant zoonotic disease (a disease of animals which can also infect humans).
• TB is a notifiable disease listed in the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) Terrestrial Animal Health Code.
Where is the disease found?
• The presence of TB is throughout the world but disease is more prevalent in Africa, parts of Asia (like India) and of the Americas.
