First of all prosthetics are truly a great piece of technology. Prosthetics help people function and move,and some help the prosthetic look more “human”. The first Prosthetic body part was a foot and it was traced back to some time in 750 B.C. It had a long time for it to evolve and it has. So far it has some made of steel and carbon fiber. Some are coated with leather. Even some have tribal tattoos on it. Sadly prosthetics can be harmful technology because they can be considered a fashion statement; however, they are actually beneficial because they function well and help people feel more”human”. Most people use them for walking but the are other limbs like arms hands and feet. Prosthetics are a beneficial piece of technology because of good smooth function and a lot of change. To begin with, Lee Romney wrote, ”We can rebuild him. We have the technology. We can make him better than he was.Better...stronger...faster.” This means if someone need the prosthetic limb they could have it more than human. Legs, some laser etched with tribal tattoos, the shape of an amputees sound limb without pretending in the least to be human.” This is related to the con, but it’s for people who truly need it. Lee Romney also wrote, ”Designer limbs must represent personality as well as physicality.” This means that theses leg have to work well to. Adversities are often given a negative connotation and view, as most consider them to be hurdles which impede progress. Nevertheless when taken in and accepted under a positive light, adversities can serve as stepping stones through which an individual can better their character. In the face of looming obstacles individuals who persevere come out of the situation as stronger, determined, and more hopeful for the future.
Organisms are limited by the structure of their bodies. Some creatures are capable to do great things because of the number of limbs they have, or the density of their skin. Humans in particular are extremely reliant in the capabilities that our bodies bring to us. Our bodies however, are not all dependable, as we can injure ourselves, and even lose parts of our body. Today I am going to talk about the article “Amputees by Choice” by Carl Elliott. This topic is not about amputees in general but by people who want to cut off a healthy part of their body. Now you may ask, who in their right mind would want to do such a thing. Believe it or not, there is a condition called Body Integrity Identity Disorder (BIID). This is a mental disorder in which a person wants to amputate one or more of their healthy limbs. We then should ask, what motivates a person to want to amputate a healthy limb? There are couples of reasons or explanations for this disorder. First is that they are suffering from Body Dysmorphic Disorder, a condition in which the person believes that part of their body is diseased or ugly. The second explanation is psychosexual disorder call Acrotomophilia. This is a sexual attraction to an amputee. The last explanation is a mismatch between their bodies as they experience it.
If your body was ninety percent artificial, would you still count yourself as human? The character Jenna Fox from the book The Adoration of Jenna Fox by Mary E. Pearson might have the answer. Jenna is a seventeen year old girl recovering from a traumatic accident, whose body has been replaced almost completely with prosthetics. In Jenna’s world, a limit is put on the amount of prosthetics one can receive, and Jenna has far surpassed it. Following her accident, her parents decided that the only way to save Jenna was to use an illegal amount of prosthetics on her. One guy named Fox takes care of injured birds. One bird in particular called a sand crane would regularly injure its frail legs. Without their legs cranes cannot survive. Fox finally decided he put down enough cranes, and he started working on a prosthetic leg for the crane. The first crane to receive a plastic leg walked around as if it were her real leg (Anthes 137). The crane went from on the verge of dying to walking around naturally with a prosthetic. The crane now can live a longer healthy life, rather than dying well before its life expectancy. Cranes sometimes scratch themselves with the plastic leg as they would with their real legs. Most people do not actively seek out adversity, yet few can escape encountering adversity in the form of hardships and afflictions. Two people who faced great adversity in their lives were Martin Luther King Jr. and my father Brent Vickery. These men both faced adversity in different degrees and at different times and places within the United States, but what makes them similar is that their strength of character allowed them to face adversity boldly.
We should not let our hardships and challenges defeat us, but rather we should conquer our challenges.
The obstacles which we must face are not there to hinder our daily life. They are there to provide countless opportunities to obtain greater success. In order to be successful we must look at every obstacle as a new opportunity.
Prosthetics (pronounced prahs-THEH-tiks) is the branch of medicine that deals with the artificial replacement of a missing body part. A prosthesis (pronounced prahs-THEE-sis) is the general term for the artificial part itself that replaces the body part usually lost to disease or injury. Prosthetics has a long history, and recent design advances that use battery power and new lightweight composite materials are making prostheses better and easier to use.

Describing it further as a bucket on a stick, feeling very wrong, and squeezing his leg so hard it feels as if all his stitches have popped (Barry 30-32). Lola Shanks, a prosthetist, assisted Charlie when learning how to use the leg. Mr. Shanks, Lola’s father, being an amputee of various limbs gives Lola the most experience in the field. Although she has the largest experience with prosthetics in the entirety of the book, the study of prosthetics is such a tiny department compared to the cancer research department, there are few options for artificial legs, arms, et cetera. Meaning although those prosthetics can be useful in rehab, once the patient is back into reality they might not be the best option.
