Don’t Worry, Be Happy “Once you replace negative thoughts with positive ones, you’ll start having positive results” (Nelson). People may not always succeed if they have a cheerful mindset, but it will give them more of an opportunity to succeed than a pessimistic mindset. Winston Churchill encouraged his country of Great Britain to stay positive and energized in his speech “Blood, Toil, Tears, and Sweat”. To go along with that, “Diary of a Young Girl” is an excerpt from Anne Frank’s diary which she kept during World War II and in it she wrote about how she kept a cheerful enthusiasm on her life and situation. With all of that being said however, others may argue that a bright outlook while in a difficult situation is hard to achieve and when …show more content…
However, the best way to respond to conflict is to keep a positive mindset because of the health benefits that go along with the positivity. Furthermore, a happy mindset can affect other people as well as help people reach their goal. To start off, keeping a positive mindset can help people on an emotional scale during a very emotional and mentally tough time. By having a bright attitude, they can continue to stay motivated and can continue to stay resilient with the energy they preserve by having a rosy outlook. To go with that, Erica McDermott writes in her article “4 Surprising Benefits of Staying Happy”, “It boosts motivation, engagement, creativity, energy, health, and resiliency”. This shows that having better health will increase people’s emotion and positivity because when people feel bad, they are likely to act in a negative way. With the creativity they have, they can come up with ways to either keep themselves distracted or come up with ways to fight back against the conflict they are facing. To move on, a way to stay positive when feeling down is to write about it because it, “...can actually make you feel better. That's in part because writing organizes your thoughts, which makes the experience feel less
Three sources, in particular, Anne Frank, Dear Miss Breed, and a life story that is very heartwarming. They show how being positive is the best way to handle a conflict, however a negative conflict will get you nowhere. To start off, Anne Frank stayed optimistic while she and her family were hiding away from the Nazi Army. She writes in her diary, Kitty, about her experience in hiding. On Saturday, July 11, she writes,”Father, Mother, and Margot still can’t get used to the chiming of the Westertoren clock, which tells us the time every quarter of an hour.
Ever hear one say, “Sometimes I’m busy making others happy, that I forget to make sure I’m okay.”? After reading Barbara Ehrenreich’s Bright-Sided I have learned that balancing both positive and negative thinking is the single most important life lesson shown throughout the book. Ehrenreich tells readers that the power of positive thinking Is undermining America and how being too positive and too optimistic, can lead to trouble. One that knows how to balance the amount of positivity and negativity will create a proper outcome for their future.
In the poem “Invictus” by William Ernest optimism can be found in the quote “my head is bloody, But unbowed” (2). This show how no matter what negative thing happens in your life, no matter how bad it is you can always make something positive out of it. Optimism can also be seen in the quote “my unconquerable soul” (1). This shows how confident and positive he is about and is showing he puts the negative emotions to ret and just the positive rise and defeats the negative emotions. He only lets the positive in and lets the negative stay outside so nothing can conquer his soul. He thanking the Gods for his "unconquerable soul...
Having a positive outlook can be very important when being involved in a conflict or trying to solve one. This is how Anne Frank and Louise Ogawa from First Read: Dear Miss Breed got through the roughest times of their lives. They kept a positive outlook on things and tried to make the best of the worst. Just looking on the bright side, even if it feels like there isn’t one can make a huge difference. As a great thinker, such as Joyce Meyer, once said, ‘’A positive attitude gives you power over your circumstances instead of your circumstances, having power over you’’. If they did not maintain a positive outlook, then who knows how they would have survived. Having a positive outlook gives you the strength to keeping going
Sometimes, I will have friends come up to me with a difficulty and the only thought running through my head would be, “how can I make them see the positive side of this?” Positivity naturally encourages people to see an end to a difficulty and even see the light of the situation. Imparting optimism remains one of my principles in life, as I have seen it push people and myself to do amazing things. Eleanor Roosevelt is a remarkable woman as listed above, but above all, her commitment stands out the most.
The importance dispositional optimism as a facilitator of well-being, positive health, flourishing, and quality of life has been documented in the positive psychology literature. Dispositional optimism evaluated by the LOT-R is a positive personality trait characterized by favorable personal future expectation (Scheier et al., 1994). It has been emphasized that optimism is a malleable personality trait and that pessimists can become optimists by utilizing techniques such as positive psychology interventions (Carver et al., 2009; Seligman, 2011). In contrast to traditional psychological interventions, positive psychology interventions have a strong focus on cultivating positive personality traits including dispositional optimism.
Barbara Ehrenreich is the author of the speech “Smile or Die,” she uses this speech to inform her listeners about the ideology of mandatory positive thinking and how it is not always the answer. Ehrenreich talks about what people are forced to learn and how they are forced to think: if they want something bad enough, no matter what that thing may be, that wishing for it and having a positive attitude will put it in their possession. Wanting something bad enough is all it supposedly takes, yet Ehrenreich has an opposite perspective and she educates her audience on her opinion of “thinking positively” using her own personal experiences such as cancer, background knowledge and real-life examples. She wants people to understand that being positive
Optimism is applicable to both crises and normal living. It has been shown how optimism brings about the good life amidst catastrophe, but what happens between major life events? One cannot live the good life without a sense of purpose. Optimism encompasses both goals and one’s hope in their accomplishment, giving one a sense of purpose and an anticipation of happiness in times of comfort or distress and keeping the individual progressing within their life story. Thus, a positive view of the future is critical to the good life in adversity or
People can stay positive and not stay positive for many different reasons, even if they believe that things could get better. And in both novels Night by Elie Wiesel and Sold by Patricia McCormick deal with positivity in similar ways. So, by examining the novels Night and Sold we can see that staying positive is vital to survival which, is important because when someone is not positive anymore they will give up hope.
We know that the mind clings to the negative — but research also shows us that 3 times more positive things happen to us than negative things every day. At any given time, a lot of things are going right in our lives. Either in our career or in our personal lives. It could be that you enjoy what you do at work, are grateful for the paycheck, or appreciate your organization’s values or benefits. It could be the joy you derive from your family, hobbies, sports, or community service. When we savor our experiences, we derive more pleasure and satisfaction from them. Spending time enjoying and feeling grateful for what is going right in your life will help you weather the rest. Caroline spent hours every week devoted to a community service activity from which she derived the joy and strength with which to face her other
It has become widely accepted that optimism serves as a predictor of positive health outcomes (Rasmussen, H., Scheier, M., & Greenhouse, J., 2009). One particular study assessed the role of optimism and pessimism in children and adolescents. This study revealed the importance of developing optimism in children as it serves as a protective factor, not just in daily life hassles, but in medical complications as well. Furthermore, having an optimistic outlook on the future serves as a predictor of better medication and medical treatment adherence in children and adolescence with chronic illnesses. The development of an optimistic mindset development in childhood is particularly important in that it also serves to promote adult well-being (Ey et al., 2004). An additional study assessed the roles of optimism and pessimism on mental health and physical health. The findings from this study emphasize the importance of optimism on mental and physical well-being, which is particularly important for understanding the role of optimism in chronic illnesses, such as HIV
Conflict is always present in human interactions. A conflict is not always a negative thing. Sometimes if it is handled properly, it will result in broadening one’s mind or giving one a chance to grow and change. On the other hand, if people were
This elasticity in your approach to choosing which conflict style is best for the current situation is a key to managing conflict. No one style of conflict resolution will work all the time when addressing issues. You must remain flexible to other people’s wants, needs, direction, criticism, schedules, moods, temperament, and a myriad of other things in life. If there is one thing in life that will never change it is the fact that everything is going to change! There is nothing you can do to stop it, so the quicker you learn how to adapt to the changes the better off you will be. The ability to change your approach to dealing with conflict better prepares you to face the interpersonal challenges that will eventually come your way. I believe it is important to also remember that you cannot win every battle with every person you encounter. Knowing that you cannot fix or solve every problem with everyone is very helpful in reducing stress and managing difficult situations with others. My father dislikes when I use this cliché but sometimes, it is what it
We all need more positivity in our lives, otherwise, we wouldn 't be able to sustain ourselves mentally. Positivity is a platform to hope, a warm greeting or even a smile. It enlightens your day in ways you can’t possibly explain. Judge for yourself through the following example. Imagine someone negative coming across people the whole day and having to go to work like this person always does every day. Now, the fact that he/she is negative is going to cut him/her completely to what he/she is normally supposed to do. This means that he will probably not return someone 's greeting or notice the time passing by. In other words, he/she is going to be distracted by a negative thought. On the other hand, when you have a positive attitude you know more or less how to get back to reality and carry on with your day.
While retiring to bed at night, one should say "it was a nice day and now I can have a relaxed sleep. Let the tomorrow be brighter, fresher and cheerful" Psychologists insist on having just positive thoughts. When you recurrently habit yourself with such thoughts, your mind and body are used to the positive vibrations they set in. Once your body is a harbor of positive thinking, you can never run out of hope and optimism.
