Eleanor Roosevelt: American Hero From the time Eleanor Roosevelt was born in 1884 to her unfortunate death in 1962, Roosevelt has proved herself to be one of America’s female heroes. Throughout her political career, Roosevelt set informal precedents when she was the First Lady of the United States (1933-1945) and a Diplomat for the United Nations. She once said, “It is better to light a candle than to curse the darkness,” and having said that during the Great Depression, demonstrates her exemplary traits as a leader. I strive to possess the same qualities Eleanor Roosevelt has exhibited. I admire her determination, willingness to help others, optimism and commitment. Eleanor Roosevelt’s selfishlessness has allowed me to follow in her foot Eleanor Roosevelt is the best example for optimism since she was the First Lady during the Great Depression. Providing optimistic views in situations is important to me because it gives people a reason to rise above difficult times. Eleanor Roosevelt’s optimism is one of the main reasons why I chose Eleanor Roosevelt as my role model. She provided her authoritative voice for those who did not have one throughout the Great Depression. She was also vocal about maintaining a positive mindset because she knew the Depression would end through the country’s perseverance. My involvement in sports has challenged my optimism sometimes, but because it is one of my principles in life, I strive to encourage positive thoughts to others in a game situation. Sometimes, I will have friends come up to me with a difficulty and the only thought running through my head would be, “how can I make them see the positive side of this?” Positivity naturally encourages people to see an end to a difficulty and even see the light of the situation.
