You might be wondering, what is it that you need to do to be successful for the long-term? Well, failure, effort, and practice are the key to success, based on research by famous psychologists. Try putting effort in your work, and maybe practice more the things you need to improve on. Also, if you fail it’s ok, it’s part of the ways to being successful. Carol Dweck, a professor of psychology states that “The more you work your brain it acts like a muscle and starts getting smarter and stronger.” Carol Dweck is insisting that if you put the effort in and at least trying, if you take that time and put effort in, whatever you may be struggling with and thinking that it’s impossible, it will be possible if you put effort in. Carol Dweck emphasizes that “The ability to learn is not fixed, it can change with your effort.” This justifies that if you believe you can do it, you will because you are trying, you are willing to do it, no matter what and how long it takes, this is putting effort in. Jay Mathews argues that “ Students who are self disciplined can outperform students who are not.” He insists that students who are putting effort in and trying will do better than the ones who are not trying because you don’t put effort in you are not committed to it. An example that Jay Mathews gives is that “Hungary 4 years-olds willing to wait for two marshmallows were more successful years later than those who gobbled up one marshmallow immediately.” This shows that the kids were so hungry that they put in the effort to get more. Carol Dweck states that “The brain is more like a muscle—it changes and gets stronger when you use it.” This examines that when you are using your brain like for example, when practicing something it will start to get stronger and you would eventually get the concept, you just have to practice. She also concludes, “Most people don’t know that when they practice and learn new things, parts of their brain change and get larger a lot like muscles do when they exercise.” This proves that when people think they’re failing they are actually not practicing, so their brain is not being challenged, but if they practice your brain will get stronger. An example that Carol Dweck uses is that “At first, no one can read or solve equations. But with practice, they can do it. And the more a person learns, the easier it gets to learn new things—because their brain “muscles” have gotten stronger.” In other words, she rebuts that no one can just do something so perfect right away, they must have had practice over a long period of time, and when you practice your brain gets stronger and things would become easier for you. “There is no elevator to success, you have to take the stairs,” was said by motivational speaker and American author Zig Ziglar. This relates to Carol S. Dweck’s article “Brainology” and Sherman Alexie’s essay “Superman and Me.” Ziglar, Dweck, and Alexie all feel that it isn’t easy for someone to become successful. It takes hard work, perseverance, and the want to learn and grow. In Dweck’s article, she stated that someone with a growth mindset would become more successful and knowledgeable than someone with a fixed mindset, which was demonstrated by Alexie in his essay, and by a personal experience of my own.
Failure is not an option, this phrase rushes through everyone’s head while trying to complete a task or goal successfully. Failure is thought of a parasitic word that only successful people have not heard of. With the article “Failure is not an Option” I feel it’s very well written and I agree with much of the article when Allison Carr, the author, explains how failure can be used as a learning tool. While she also states how failure is a bad thing, or parasitic as I stated before. I really appreciated how she covered both sides of the debate. However, I think Carr should touch about grit and open mindedness. Which are the two most vital traits to have while trying to learn from your mistakes, in my opinion.
Failure and learning have a complicated, yet important relationship with each other. In ‘A Nation of Wimps’, Hara Marano writes about through trial and error humans can become successful. An article by Robert I. Sutton of the Harvard Business Review, talks about a method of learning from failures. Dr. Everett Piper describes in the article ‘This is Not a Day Care. It’s a University!’ that students who do not repent their sins can not learn from them. In the speech ‘This is Water’, by David Wallace he explains how learning to think is in a way knowing what to think about. An article by Bob Lenz titled ‘Failure Is Essential to Learning’ addresses the notion that failure is a key importance in the process of learning. Failure is an essential and important step in the difficult process of learning.
Failure is apart of life, it can make or break a person. When a person experiences a type of failure it is now up to them to see how they respond. They can choose the high road, and become a stronger person for it. Then they can choose the low road, the easy way out. The easy way out is never a good choice. It can lead only to destruction. The high road is the right choice to take when responding to failure. It will lead down a path of success. Jessica Lahey’s article, “When Success Leads to Failure” is an article that shows how kids are experiencing failure. Lahey says that, “these kids have a fear for failure, and that they have given up natural loves for learning. They are scared of not being successful”(Lahey). The truth is life is hard there will be failure. There is nothing in this world that comes easy to anyone.
Dr. Chew states in “Beliefs That Make You Fail…Or Succeed” that some individuals believe that they are not as good on a subject like others leading to a loss of their own hopes. To get better on a weak subject time commitment and hard work is necessary. More concentration and effort is needed to succeed. 2. In video 1, “Beliefs That Make You Fail…Or Succeed” Dr. Chew explains that studying while having other distractions lead to poor study habits and performance.

What you need to be successful is a positive mindset. I know it is not easy these days, with the economy at an all time low. Thought, word and deeds. You will want to have positive thoughts.
Between school and work and studying and spending time with family and friends, most of our youth have packed schedules. Many students have the burden of honors or advanced placement classes piling homework on their shoulders. The real challenges that a youth faces is certainly how will he/she will able to survive in this world,peer pressure, and acceptance. The biggest problem is that we believe that being young automatically means that we can’t do anything important.
One problem I have noticed that there are still students at my grade level who do not take education in a serious matter and will have lack of education performance because of the lack of not having a positive mindset and those are the students who are more likely to not be successful. The author Paul Tough made a point, “Finally, in December, she left she had internalized enough about comma splices and dependent clauses, and she handed in her final English paper without going over it with the writing tutor. She got an A” this shows how Kewauna had felt confident because she had been using the practice of how to correct herself on writing a paper. She became confident and had the courage and turn in an assignment. It was not because of Kewauna’s intelligence that gave her an A
Accomplishing your aim or purpose can be the true definition of success. You must want to achieve your goals at hand. You must want to earn everything. You really should put in the effort needed to become a successful person. Becoming a successful person requires you to be an extraordinary character. This means you have to be a very self-disciplined, competent, and trustworthy person. That allows you to become more trusted within the community and earn more respect. Learning from your mistakes is essential to your success. Every time you fail you become more knowledgeable on a subject.
