Another way to improve student success in Anaheim schools is to be willing to learn the material and put the effort in order to receive intelligent as a result. In the Article The Secret to Raising Smart Kids the author states, “ We recommend other effort their effort: “‘Wow… that’s a really good score. You must have work really hard”’(25). This statement shows if student studies and practice and learn the material it is possible for a rewarding result of passing the test/ class. Also, another thing that relates, “ Confronted by a setback such as a disappointed test grade students with a Growth Mindset said they would study harder or try different strategy for mastery the material” (23). One problem I have noticed that there are still students at my grade level who do not take education in a serious matter and will have lack of education performance because of the lack of not having a positive mindset and those are the students who are more likely to not be successful. The author Paul Tough made a point, “Finally, in December, she left she had internalized enough about comma splices and dependent clauses, and she handed in her final English paper without going over it with the writing tutor. She got an A” this shows how Kewauna had felt confident because she had been using the practice of how to correct herself on writing a paper. She became confident and had the courage and turn in an assignment. It was not because of Kewauna’s intelligence that gave her an A but it was because of her mindset of pushing herself to work hard to receive a good result. These students come in with a fixed mindset in what it will be a class about just reading and writing on boring topics and that they will neither understand the readings or develop a well-written paper. Yet, there are those that see it as a way of being introduced to new material and hearing the different point of views from peers and instructor. What can harness the development of a growth mindset in a class? Well for starters we can start Dweck recommends taking careful consideration of the words given to the students (p.4). Dweck also says to not to praise their intelligence but the effort of the student. For instance, by replacing the word “fail” to “learn” it can have two different outcomes. It can be used in a term as if falling short on a goal; it is not that they “fail” but they “learn” from what kept them from reaching that goal. As far as I can remember, I was never really any good at school. I couldn’t concentrate on things for no more than 5 minutes at a time, I would either get discouraged or find it too easy and just give up. An author by the name of Carol Dweck wrote an article called “Brainology”. In it, Dweck describes that there are two types of mindsets: fixed and growth. Those who are afraid to fail so they never try anything new are those with a fixed mindset and the growth mindset are those who are not afraid to fail and find a new challenge, an opportunity to learn something new.
There are many attitudes that form certain mindsets. Some of these mindsets can change how a person does and perceives things. Some mindsets that can do just that are Dweck’s example of a growth mindset and fixed mindsets. According to Dweck, a fixed mindset is one in where “.. students believe that intelligence is fixed..” and a fixed mindset is the “..believe that intelligence is a potential that can be realized through learning. As a result, confronting challenges, profiting from mistakes, and persevering in the face of setbacks become ways of getting smarter. Because people with growth mindsets can through setbacks, and find alternatives to better themselves; They turn to perseverance and hard work to achieve their goals.
School days should be shorter fro students because they do not get enough sleep, have to much homework, and have barley have time to participate in extra curricular activities. A majority of students have sleep depravation due to school. If school would either start or end late students will have a greater opportunity to get more sleep. Teachers expect students to pay attention for 90 minutes while the night before they were up late finishing their homework for there classes. Some teachers do not realize that students have a life and work or have other obligations that take up a major portion of the students.
In the reading “Mindset: How you can fulfil your potential” by (Dweck, 2012) Chapter One introduces the reader to the Fixed and Growth mindset, and identifies how basic qualities and intelligence can be improved by effort.
Students now and days are getting less sleep at night due to feeling the need to stay up and study for an exam. Anaheim high schools can encourage students to care more about learning than how well students can do on a test. Looking at a student's test scores and their grades can be as if you’re looking at two different students. In Dweck's essay, she speaks about the many ways a student can be affected by their failure. “Such children hold an implicit belief that intelligence is innate and fixed, making striving to learn to seem far less important than being (looking) smart”(21).
In the article, Dweck discovers how students’ mindsets affect their education and their achievements. Students who believed that their intelligence can expand (known as growth mindset) do better academically than children who believe the opposite (known as fixed mindset). Dweck then claims, “... we found that having children focus on the process that leads to learning (like hard work or trying new strategies) could foster a growth mindset and its benefits.” Teachers can apply this to their teachings, and further push their students in reaching higher goals.
Carol Dweck wrote the essay “The Two Mindsets” which was from her book Mindset: The New Psychology of Success, which was published in 2006. In this essay Dweck argues that the way a person thinks about themselves is the determining factor in whether or not they will develop an appreciation of the learning process and be successful in their life. Dweck does not just give one side but both, she refers to the mindsets as “fixed” versus the “growth” and she then argues that a growth mindset is necessary for a person to achieve their goals to their full potential.
There are many roads to be successful in learning, but they all involve developing mindset. Developing the right mindset is a key success for most learning. Carol S.Dweck, the author of " brainology", indentified two diffent mindsets : fixed mindsets and grow mindsets. These impact student 's learning differently. From my point of view, having a growth mindset is the best for success since this belief assists students learn and develop a good self-motivation in goals, efforts, and setbacks.
Schools should not start later because that would cause a lot of problems. Schools should stay how they are because it will make kids stop being on there phones at night so much, it won’t make school end later (and make kids walk home in the dark), and it interfere with sports or jobs.
They believed that just by doing nothing intelligence would come to them on it own. These students also believed that if they had to work hard for something they weren't smart enough and that they didn't have ability but if they tried to work hard they would be afraid of falling and thats one thing that fixed mindset students always try to avoid.
