Nearly everyone fears failure to some degree; although for some this fear can become immobilizing, preventing progress and achieving any form of success. It is impossible to live without failure in our lives; it is essential for everything, including success. To be wise does not mean to have an extraordinary ability or unattainable knowledge; it is to understand the importance of failure and to have the ability to learn from it. To fail is to learn, and you cannot live a fulfilled life without learning. Someone who lives their life fearing failure will live an unfulfilled life; they will never take risks and never learn from their mistakes, since they believe that failure is proof of inadequacy instead of a valuable learning opportunity. …show more content…

I have been in various environments where failure is regarded as the worst possible outcome, the worst way for things to end and in some situations, simply not an option. Fear as motivation can be effective, however, in some situations paralyzing. We are constantly competing with one another, sometimes to a point where it becomes destructive, because we are not given the chance to fail without repercussions that will ultimately have a negative impact on us.

In many ways this fear has been a motivator for me, when I lack genuine interest in something, like this essay, my fear of its effect on my grades will encourage me to continue on. I think at some point in all our lives we are told that failure is not an option, whether it be your parents, siblings, friends, employers etc. In my experience this mentality can work; if you eliminate the option of failure the only thing left to do is succeed, which in theory should be fairly simple. ** NOTE TO SELF: CHANGE THIS HOLY SHIT CHANGE IT Even in environments where I am told failure is acceptable, I am acutely aware that the supported, sometimes even encouraged failure will only be a disappointment for me. The only acceptable reason to fear failure is to fear that you might not gain wisdom from it, that the experience of failure was a waste and nothing was gained. Failure is almost always a step to something better, but you cannot succeed without it, those who fail to understand that will eventually meet a challenge they are unable to overcome.
