Independence By definition, independence means being free from outside control and not depending on another’s authority. Independence was something I craved so badly to be. I felt an importance to accomplish something on my own. I know that being independent will assist me in becoming an achieving adult. I know that being truly independent is earned by taking small well thought out steps. Decisions need to be made, steps have to be taken, and sometimes there is risk in becoming independent. At this age, I wanted my independence to show others I have the ability to grow on my own and make important decisions. As like many other teenagers, it was important for me to prove to myself, my family and friends that I could make a difference in my life. I enjoy working and feeling a sense of self accomplishment. I am proud of myself and that I am a good reliable worker. On occasion, I have taken on extra shifts when it does not interfere with my responsibilities and the place I work appreciates that I take my education so seriously and that I also help them when they are in a bind. Throughout my few months of experience, I learned being independent is just as important as being dependent. There is a balance of needing others and being able to make your own decisions. For instance, a customer may have called saying they received the wrong order. In that instance, I did not have the authority to make the decision that would be a solution for the customer, so I apologized for our mistake and asked them to hold while I explained the situation to my manager who then resolved the issue.
