A great American leader once said “ Ask not what your country can do for you - ask what you can do for your country.” - John F. Kennedy. There are many great American leaders in this country, Abraham Lincoln, George Washington, Theodore “Teddy” Roosevelt, Thomas Jefferson and many more. This quote by John F. Kennedy, states that people shouldn’t ask for the government for help, but to reach out to the government and help by giving advice to make this country a better place. In order for one to be an American leader, or any type of leader, one needs to be successful. By being successful, Americans need to achieve many goals in life, from the small ones to the big ones, they must be very eager to want more knowledge and to be very dedicated. …show more content…
For Example, Hanna Rosin in the TEDTalk, New Data on the Rise of Women, she explained the “rise of women.” This talk explains about how women are making their way up in their standards. She explains about women’s history in the past, how men are more dominated, and are in control of the country. Not only she is trying to reach women and tell them that they should “rise”, but also to tell men to watch out because they are not the only one who are strong in this country / world. She has a husband and two sons, she wants to teach them that one should never hurt another, especially women. For one thing, “ Women are, in fact, taking control of everything.” This quote is like an warning sign for men so they don't have a mindset of being more dominant than women. Recently, a woman, Hillary Clinton, was in vote to be the next president of the united state. She did lost but, this proved people that women can do it. Another quote that shows women empowerment, “ Young woman, were making more money than young men.” Rosin support her statement by telling that 1,997 out of 2,000 women are more not getting payed the same as men. It doesn’t make sense to have the same job, work the same hours, and get the same job done, but not get payed the same. Even though equality is something that everyone needs, people tend to push the limits of being equality too
There are countless examples of women standing up for themselves, protesting injustices, and empowering others. The idea also works the other way and influences behavior of people threatened by the idea of feminism. These people refer to themselves as either anti-feminists or meninists. A prime example of feminism in the real world is the protests at the early release of the Stanford rapist. This man raped an unconscious woman behind a dumpster and was sentenced to six months in jail. He served three of those months and is now on probation for a year. This is a classic example of how the justice system tends to blame the victim while favoring the attacker. Over one hundred women’s rights protestors gathered hours after his release demanding for the judge to be recalled. Because these women were calling for political reform, they would be considered liberal
In the majority of early cultures and societies, women have always been considered subservient and inferior to men. Since the first wave of feminism in the 19th century, women began to revolt against those prejudicial social boundaries by branching out of the submissive scope, achieving monumental advances in their roles in civilization. However, gender inequality is still prevalent in developed countries. Women frequently fall victim to gender-based assault and violence, suffer from superficial expectations, and face discriminatory barriers in achieving leadership roles in employment and equal pay. Undoubtedly, women have gained tremendous recognition in their leaps towards equal opportunity, but to condone these discrepancies, especially
"Women were denied knowledge of their history, and thus each woman had to argue as though no woman before her had ever thought or written. Women had to use their energy to reinvent the wheel, over and over again, generation after generation. ... thinking women of each generation had to waste their time, energy and talent on constructing their argument anew. Generation after generation, in the face of recurrent discontinuities, women thought their way around and out from under patriarchal thought." (Lerner qtd in Merrim Modern Women xxiii)
Author: Sheryl Sandberg, Published in 2010. Sandberg’s focal point in gender inequality is that women are disrespected because their looked at as servants rather than leaders. On Pg. 658 of They Say/I Say Sandberg states that “She should urge more women to believe in themselves and aspire to lead”, she makes a great point that women need to be encouraged to evolve into leaders. Personally, I know several women that has a high moral, and are working for leader positions in their field. There are more females that are nurses than males in America. Statistically, that makes a great outlook on how well women are doing in some areas. Sandberg also makes it known that “gender stereotypes were reinforced throughout her life and they became self-fulfilling prophesies”. I agree with Sandberg fully because there are many people will say “Women cannot drive” or “Women are only good at being servants, which includes cooking, cleaning, and other daily household chores”. While that is not true at all, women are grouped by a statistic. Simply because women are often skilled at cooking and cleaning, does not mean that is their goal or what they aspire to become. There are a plethora of women who will not cook, clean, or serve men, period. There has been women that arose to great heights. They had to beat the odds, ignore statistics, and in some cases fight their oppressors. I disagree that women should be looked upon as second class
Throughout history, there have been great leaders: civil rights leaders, business leaders, and spiritual leaders who have inspired millions. Leaders and visionaries such as John Lennon or Martin Luther King Jr. fought for unity, love, and made an impact on people through their speeches or songs. Watching these great men touch the hearts of millions has brought out a desire for me to become a C.E.O. and an important leader in the life of others. Not only do leaders have knowledge in politics, in emotional values, and spread a certain message or “vision” to their followers or co-workers, but they have certain special characteristics which make them great leaders or heroes. So, what makes these people different from you and me? Could it be that they are better looking? Perhaps they speak in parables or give great speeches? People have often said to me that a good leader is a person who guides both physically and mentally. Going to the job shadowing program has given me an opportunity to broaden my view on how efficient and effective a good leader can be in the work place. Something that has been shown to me in my many interviews with the board of directors has been that every leader must have the capability to have integrity, listen, a vision, and must be responsible.
We [women] are, as a sex, infinitely superior to men." Elizabeth Stanton (prominent woman suffragist) - (excerpted from One Woman, One Vote by Wheeler, pg. 58) "Frailty, thy name is woman." William Shakespeare - (excerpted from Hamlet, Act I, scene 2) This quote made by Stanton in 1890 shows many of the feministic beliefs held by the women of today. And the quote made by Shakespeare holds many of the same thoughts shared by men. The battle of the sexes is prevalent everywhere and is applicable to anything.
Throughout the history of mankind, there has always been a common belief that women exist inferior to men. The Bible demonstrates that God made the first woman Eve from the rib of Adam and God “[does] not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man; rather, she is to remain quiet” (1 Timothy 2:11-15). However, understanding their important role in the family and society and feeling tired of being undertreated by men, women finally stood up for themselves. In the 19th century, the Feminist Movement emerged and completely changed the lives of millions of women in the United States until this day. The Movement provides the new perspectives and protects the rights of women in social and political aspects.
Leadership is being able to direct or guide other people by either your own actions or by actually guiding them into the right direction (Acumen). Inspiration to be a leader might come from many different areas like your family, friends, peers, or even teachers. My inspiration didn’t really occur to me until I started attending college in August 2013. In all actuality I never even thought of how to be a leader until I was in Mrs. Moore’s Perspectives class. I now have a desire to be a great leader, and the inspiration has come from Mrs. Moore, and my family. I am the first to attend college out of my family, so in a away I have already started leading my siblings in the right direction. Being a leader means inspiring others to pursue their dreams, and aspirations and helping throughout the journey to success. Being a leader has nothing with authority or being able to tell other what, and how to do things, it’s about having people who look up to you and want to follow your example.
Women are usually targeted because they are seen as the inferior gender in society. They are often displayed as sexual objects in the media, such as in porn and video games. Because of the way women are portrayed in society, they do not have the same opportunities as men. Many people may think that sexism is not an important issue anymore because women are making their way to the top. For instance, Mary Berara, the CEO of General Motors says “There are more women in more senior roles than in 1980 when I started. But from my career perspective, I don 't go into a room and take count. I want to be recognized for my contribution and for what I do” (nymag). Women are pushing themselves to work in higher positions, to prove that they have the same ability as men. Although women are becoming more and more powerful, sexism is still a huge issue today. Women may have higher positions, but they are paid less than men. According to a news article, “In 2012, the median earnings of American women working full time year-round were $37,791. American men earned a median income of $49,398. The gender wage gap has hovered at about 77 cents on the dollar since 2007” (huffington). This proves that sexism is present today since women working in the same jobs as men are paid a lower
There are many different ideas about what it means to be a good leader and what the leadership means. In a simple explanation, leadership is a technique that an individual influence a group of people to achieve a common goal. A good leader can be a supervisor, manager or a business owner. Leaders are people who have expertise in achieving goals, no matter what their job titles are. Leadership is about coping with change. In a modern age we live, especially in the twentieth century, “more companies are looking for people with great leadership skills” because they can solve problems (2015, P. 13). In my idea a good leader has a vision and motivation to a team so that they can work together toward achieving
True feminism sought for women to have freedom and rights, such as the right to vote, the right to gain an education, and the right to equal wages. In most aspects, we have been given these rights, but radical feminists are not content. There has been a jump from “We are equal to men,” to “women are superior.” Women have been fighting stereotypes for ages, proclaiming how horrid they are, yet quickly turn around and stereotype men and see no issue with this hypocrisy. The way for women to reach the equality they seek is to bring others up as well as themselves, not to tear them down. When feminists realize and act upon this, they will begin to see the results they have been hoping
Women have long struggled to make their place in America be an accepted one of equality in position and pay. While some women are content to be hardworking wives and mothers of the home, others strive for a distant point with which to have a voice in what some consider as a man’s world. Across the world, many countries are a patriarchy-in which the male is the figurehead of a position in society. Different cultures, religions, and beliefs struggle against the rising desires of women to become successful leaders. Some women struggle for education to lead into corporate business, and others women are thrust into this position upon circumstance. Women just want to be heard and recognized for their place in life. Centuries ago women were to be quiet, unassuming, and dominated in society. As the views of humanity have changed, the views toward women have changed.
One good leader is George Washington. He is the founding father of the United States of America and the first president of the United States and president of the Constitution convention. He was a military general who led the United States in war against the British Colonial rulers to free the Americans in the eighteenth century. Washington was one of the greatest statesman because of his abilites of being a leader. He guided this country in its initial years of independence and refused opportunities for to to make the United States a dictatorship. “I cannot insist too strongly how I was surprised by the American Army. It is truly incredible that troops almost naked, poorly paid, and composed of old men and children and Negroes should behave so well on the march and under fire.” (George Washington: Life Before the Presidency) This quote describes naked, poor, elderly people and children work hard than most people and get hardly any money for all their hard work. Which is why George Washington put this in his book. his good leadership mostly came after he retired and went back to his career as a farmer. Later on John Adams asked Washington to be Commander in Chief of the United States...
Leadership is both a research area and a practical skill, regarding the ability of an individual or organization to "lead" or guide other individuals, teams, or entire organizations. Leadersip can not definied by just one word but by action. I have seen development within myself through my volunteer service. Leadership is both a research area and a practical opportunity to share the ability gained as a individual, also through my organizations to lead or guide other individual team members who have a common goal. Volunteering in the church organizations matches my need to be of service to others. While volunteer at Fallbrook church I in return have been served I have been guided, nurtured, and challenge through the process. I have been
Many people associate leadership with a specific job title or form of power within an organization. However, through personal experience, I have concluded that leadership can come in many forms and position as well as from multiple sources of roles and job titles both with and without power. Based on the definition of leadership, anyone can be considered a leader as long as they have the ability to influence people to achieve a particular result or goal which benefits the organization or group as a whole. Individuals with a secure sense of self and understanding, acceptance of diversity within an organization tend to be the strongest leaders that not only make others want to follow, but they also encourage other leaders to gravitate to their
