Why are you interested in becoming a mentor? When I think about the reasons why I am interested in becoming a mentor, I think about the people who have been important in my life, the ones who mentored me, the ones who set an example for me to follow. As a result, I am motivated to become a CSUSB mentor. A first-year CSUSB student mentor is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that will not only allow me to be a role model to other students and help them to be successful, but advance who I am and help me work towards my future goals. I am a Liberal Studies major, and I have the dream of becoming an elementary school teacher. A teacher and a mentor have many obvious similarities. In order to be a successful teacher, it is important to be responsible …show more content…
You must have a desire to make a difference in a student’s life, which requires a certain set of skills. Many of those skills are ones that I have developed over the years and am continuing to improve upon. The same skills are also necessary to be a successful teacher, and I think that by being a student mentor, I will be able to advance my skills as I work to be a positive role model for my proteges. The most important skill needed to be a mentor is the ability to be responsible. Responsibility has numerous components: being organized, being on time, being enthusiastic, thinking outside the box, and having the ability to succeed under any circumstance. I know that by being a mentor, I will have a busy schedule and will need to be able to plan accordingly, however this should not be a problem for me. I consider myself to be an organized, punctual person and am able to fit numerous activities into my schedule, all while maintaining a 4.0 GPA. If enthusiasm is one of the most important characteristics of a successful mentor and teacher, I’m in luck. I love going to school at CSUSB, and I love what I’m doing. Any time you are working with people, you will be faced with challenges that require thinking outside the box. When it comes to people, “one size does not fit all.” Along with being responsible, I am a person with exceptional communication skills. I am professional and …show more content…
This year, I have had a number of positive interactions with the CSUSB faculty and staff that have allowed me to make connections that will benefit me and my proteges in the future. The first person I met on campus was my Resident Assistant. Because I live on campus, this interaction insured that I would have someone close at hand who could answer any of my questions in order for me to be successful. While I made a positive connection with my resident assistant, however, she was not able to help me with planning my classes, so she referred me to the academic advisors. With assistance from the advisors, I was able to create a 4-year plan for my major. In looking at my plan, I know that many of the classes will be difficult and require serious time and commitment. I also realize that I will need help from time to time. Luckily, I have found the CSUSB professors are willing to help. All of my professors are committed to helping their students succeed. They are extremely knowledgeable, kind, and they encourage questions. By going to their office hours, I was able to directly interact with my professors and understand that they are there as a resource for the present, as well as for the future. Most importantly, I have an academic mentor of my own. Because I live on campus, he is always available to answer questions regarding my academics. As a first-year
They are mentors to many of their students and an inspiration to a brighter future. Throughout my life mentors have played a very major role in my success in education and life matters to the point where I have managed. Surprisingly many of my mentors are teachers. There are many times that I have thought of giving up not only on education but also in life but later find myself reading and achieving more. Just as in the movie discussed in this paper mentors’ encouraging words are the reason why I did not give up.
Doing research on what is needed to become successful in the field of business has benefited me tremendously. Meeting with a Virginia Tech Alum was a once in a lifetime opportunity. The chance to meet with a Virginia Tech Alum to help model the plans I will make to become successful was an opportunity that I’m very thankful for and will never forget. Thanks to the insights of my research and guidance received from the alumni I met with, I intend to approach my next five years in the Pamplin College of Business in a much more organized and determined manner.
While I wish finding my way around the school was my only problem, I was faced with some internal challenges. As the school year started, my friends slowly started to leave to these “big shot” colleges or simply move away to other community colleges. I, too, wanted the complete “college experience” somewhere in Arizona or across the country; yet I felt stuck and unaccomplished. I also felt jealousy which could have been because I did not get to decorate my dorm room. While talking about dedicating hard work to your education, Gina Rodriguez said “Just remember, during those times of fear and doubt, that you are right now discovering your true strength.” And in those times of doubt, I reminded myself why I could not just move and leave everything behind. The root of my challenges and concerns are my family. As I enrolled as a full time student, my family was fighting some financial problems which created marriage troubles for my parents. I could not leave at a time like this. I knew it was not the first time my parents were talking divorce but somehow I knew it was best to stay. I got financial aid from the school which saved me the fuss of asking my parents for money. It really meant so much to not put another worry on their
I have been a mentee in three mentoring programs and I understand from firsthand experience how important mentors have been in my life. Each relationship was very different; one of my mentors was about two generations older than me, while my two more recent mentors have been only a few years older than me.
The three main competencies of the Mentor Role are "understanding yourself and others, interpersonal communication and developing others" (Hesketh et al. , pp. 4). Because high school students are less experienced, the author used this role continually in an effort to develop his students and guide them through their learning experiences. Per Hesketh et al, the author must determine his own strengths and weaknesses so he can maximize them. "Your weaknesses can be overcome through self-development" (Hesketh et al.

Mentoring is a strong educational tool and is very useful especially within the New York City Department of Education. It is a great way for experience teachers to pass down information. The one and one interaction is more lasting than reading it from a book. This method will allow a smooth transition for new teachers. There are a lot of procedures that are confusing to beginners and mentors can uncoil those kinks. Beginning teacher will also get the opportunity to experience different teaching styles and also decide what will work for them and what will not. Mentoring is a valuable asset in guiding person’s development.
I’m a student at Tompkins Cortland Community College this is my first semester as a college student. I plan to go to college for four years and only be at TC3 for this one semester, then transfer to a four year school. College has grown around the world more than ever and more people are attending college more than ever. I have chosen to go to college because of the rewards after graduation. Yes it is another four years of school but by getting more education and an extended degree gives me more opportunities for better jobs and more money. The career I have chosen to study is business administration. I am hoping that it takes me to a great job managing a company or possibly being an accountant.
Weekend after weekend, tournament after tournament, high school debate engrossed my life. After coming to college, I did not want to give up the activity. As such, I rechanneled my knowledge into a mentorship role. Once a week, I travel into an impoverished Boston high schools and teach students how to debate effectively and successfully. The students I work with through the Harvard College Mentors for Urban Debate program know nothing about debate. They come in with a blank state. However, through a mentorship process, in the end, they were leaps and bounds ahead of where they started from.
My advisor and I have been working extremely hard to get a graduation plan and academic success plan. I do not mean to speak for anyone, but I do feel I should mention that both my academic advisor and UC-011 instructor have expressed an overwhelming amount of support and confidence in my ability as a student. I used both of them vigorously and was honest with myself and with them when it came to my academic and personal struggles. I feel with their help they have drastically improved me as a person and as a student this past
Kids that grow up with mentors have the possibility to do good in school and the outside world compare to the kids that don’t have mentors. A study from “National & Community service and Mentoring” show that there’s approximately 3 million adults that volunteer for one- on- one but that number increased more since 2002. Mentorship is someone that gives you guidance, is a role model, gives you positivity, and helps you with education wise.
Many young people just need to be motivated and given a fair chance at success. Young people need mentors to help them find their way and to help them stay focused. Mentors play an intricate roll in your lives and are sort of liaisons between your parents or guardians and your educators.
Four Reasons to Have a Mentor in Business Perhaps the greatest common denominator found with successful people in business is that they had one or more mentors in their careers.
