“And they all lived happily ever after! The end.” The young woman finished the fairytale and looked down at her daughter sitting contentedly on the lap of her long black gown. The girl was tired after a long day of play and snuggled into her mother, marking the pages with her short chubby fingers. The mother leaned down and kissed her fair, tousled head. This is the moment which is captured in William Sergeant Kendall’s “The End of the Day”. This painting, done in the year 1900, is a depiction of the artist’s wife and young daughter. As the title suggests, the portrait was intended to be an image of his tired family at the end of a long day. Anyone who looks at the picture cannot help but leave with the thought that it was a pleasant thing to look at, but whether the painting truly depicts beauty is left to be determined. The first way in which the painting displays beauty is in the technique of the artist. Kendall used a certain technique in which he created an ambiguous light source, thus removing any strong sense of shadow. Through this technique, he drifted away from the impressionist movement of his peers. Impressionists try to capture the images without detail but with bold colors, while Kendall preferred a romantic style, realistic but with emotion. His paintings took many weeks, even months to finish, but it is clear to all who see them that they are truly beautiful. This specific painting is a depiction of his wife and oldest child. This is where your eyes expend more time, also sometimes forgiving the background. The way the artist is trying to present this piece is showing happiness, excitement, and dreams. Happiness because he transmits with the bright colours. After probably 15 minutes on front of the painting I can feel that the artist tries to show his happiness, but in serene calm. I found The Raising of Lazarus and Annunciation to be interesting pieces on their own as well as to be compared. At face value, these paintings do not appear to contain many contrasting features. However, by examining these paintings closely, one can conclude that paintings with similar themes, mediums, and time periods can still differ in countless ways. Light, medium, subject, color, space, and viewpoint are just a few of the characteristics that can be considered when analyzing Wtewael and Caliari’s works. It is imperative that observers of art take a deeper look into the different features of artwork in attempt to uncover the intentions of the artist.

The composition of this painting forces the eye to the woman, and specifically to her face. Although the white wedding dress is large and takes up most of the woman’s figure, the white contrasts with her face and dark hair, forcing the viewer to look more closely into the woman’s face. She smokes a cigarette and rests her chin on her hands. She does not appear to be a very young woman and her eyes are cast down and seem sad. In general, her face appears to show a sense of disillusionment with life and specifically with her own life. Although this is apparently her wedding day, she does not seem to be happy.
Lawrence’s style is also shown here with the simplified human figures amid abstract forms in bold colors. The diagonal lines draw attention to the door and windows at the top of the painting. The forms in the painting appear flat, angular and two dimensional with the exception of the tombstones drawing more attention to them. The painting contains religious and symbolic references to the cycle of life. There is a woman holding a baby reminiscent of a Madonna and child as well as the tombstones depicting death.

When first approaching this work, one feels immediately attracted to its sense of wonder and awe. The bright colors used in the sun draws a viewer in, but the astonishment, fascination, and emotion depicted in the expression on the young woman keeps them intrigued in the painting. It reaches out to those who have worked hard in their life and who look forward to a better future. Even a small event such as a song of a lark gives them hope that there will be a better tomorrow, a thought that can be seen though the countenance by this girl. Although just a collection of oils on a canvas, she is someone who reaches out to people and inspires them to appreciate the small things that, even if only for a short moment, can make the road ahead seem brighter.
