The use of symbols in surrealism and the meaning within these paintings by Max Ernst played a significant influence on the notion of my experimental art making. He was a German painter, sculptor and a graphic artist but also considered as one of the primary pioneers of the Dada and Surrealism movement. They aimed to revolt against everyday reality by exploring the construction of the unconscious mind. By exploring the mind and transforming reality by surveying the desires of the human nature, it allows one to contemplate on the actuality and the realities of our world. Uniquely, Ernst created his own set of techniques such as collage, frottage, grattage, decalcomania and oscillation in order to convey his symbolism of his art making – but it also later incentivized artists such as Jackson Pollock and William De Kooning, revealing his such influence and impact in the art world.
Max Ernst’s work has several dimensions and characteristics, most notably the dubious character of his illustrated worlds that have contributed to the appeal of the audiences. His prime concern was to present irresolvable isolation. As his father inspired his son a penchant for challenging the authority whilst being interested in painting and sketching nature, Ernst was motivated to take up painting himself. Moreover, he studied philosophy and psychology in 1909 at the Bonn University but also later dropped out. Most notably, during the course he visited an asylum and studied the work of the insane, a study inspired by Freud’s theory of the unconsciousness. His father was a devout Catholic and denounced his son’s works. This painting is displayed as rising out of their troubled relationship together but it resists precise analysis. His revolt against his father is highlighted through, “But, dear Father, for what reason are you so opposed to dreams…? It would seem to me that dreams are a bastion against the regularity and familiarity of life and interrupt the perpetual earnestness of adults with a joyous children’s game.”
Overall, Max Ernst, in particular the symbols and meanings that he is able to convey within his works. Moreover, he explored the unconsciousness of a human’s mind reflected through his works as part of the surrealism movement and revolted against the everyday reality of our lives – his primary theme and concerns of our sub-conscious and unconsciousness, in that I aim to explore.
Wayne, transforms this painting into a three dimensional abstract piece of art. The focal point of the painting are the figures that look like letters and numbers that are in the front of the piece of art. This is where your eyes expend more time, also sometimes forgiving the background. The way the artist is trying to present this piece is showing happiness, excitement, and dreams. Happiness because he transmits with the bright colours. After probably 15 minutes on front of the painting I can feel that the artist tries to show his happiness, but in serene calm. The excitement that he presents with the letters, numbers and figures is a signal that he feels anxious about what the future is going to bring. One of the biggest surrealist was an artist known as Salvador Dali who brought surrealism from the many European cultures to the American culture. This was significant because the surrealist was spreading the idea of the surrealism, regardless of whether he was doing it for his own ‘fame’. Dali was one of the main surrealist who was looking to recreate his own dream world that he had dreamt in his own unconscious mind. Much of the art includes major contrasts of thoughts or objects. One of the most important parts of manifesto is the freedom for the artist. Breton wanted the artist to be as free as possible to make the work more surrealistic. In this essay Nadja is crucial factor to show how Breton used surrealist factors in his own literature and how it was such a success. In his novel Breton uses a lot of different surrealistic examples, metaphors, junxapositions, etc to make his work as surrealist as possible. He is very successful because the story of Nadja seems just like a dream when reading it. It seems as if he has met the woman of his dreams and it all just gets taken away from him. The Surrealist movement unlike Dada was made of components: artist, poets, writers all rallied under Andre Breton, a poet, who’s Surrealist Manifesto in 1924. For Brenton, automatism, hallucinatory, and irrational thought associations and recollected dream images which allowed the liberation the psyche from its enslavement to reason. It glorifies irrationality and gives and gives an objective status to a wide range of fantastic imagery. Surrealism was revolution not only in style but also in philosophy. Surrealism questioned humanity’s entire relationship and perspective with our sense of reality. They argued that in order to give existence any meaning—to give our actions and statements meaning— humans must construct a belief system, a form of reality around us. Yet there are points where humanity reaches a point when the injustice of life gives us a feeling of senselessness. Yet, surrealist wanted to reawaken man’s talents for the irrational, the fantastical, and the spiritual that had been hidden deeply under Modernism and Humanism. Surrealism reconciled all contradictions in thought and in human condition, enabling the mind to leap barriers of reason and dreaming and reason and madness. The surrealist vision searches for a high reality through the mediums of the subconscious. Surrealist art was to reconcile the differences between man—the social animal, and man – the individual as well as the differences between man’s conscious and subconscious. Its task was to bridge the twin components into something newer, a greater reality.
Abstract Expressionism is making its comeback within the art world. Coined as an artist movement in the 1940’s and 1950’s, at the New York School, American Abstract Expressionist began to express many ideas relevant to humanity and the world around human civilization. However, the subject matters, contributing to artists, were not meant to represent the ever-changing world around them. Rather, how the world around them affected the artist themselves. The works swayed by such worldly influences, become an important article within the artists’ pieces. Subjectively, looking inward to express the artist psyche, artists within the Abstract Expressionism movement became a part of their paintings. Making the paintings more of a representation of one’s self.

Salvador Dalí is probably one of the most well-known artists of the Surrealist period, as well as a very influential figure in modern art. Even though he was formally expelled from the Surrealist movement years before his death, one could not consider him/herself a true Surrealist without having studied Dalí’s background, methods, philosophies, inspirations and influences.

Green 1 Controlled Chaos: The Impact of Surrealism on the Art World The Surrealist movement that began in the 1920’s, was unlike anything the art world had ever seen before. While Surrealist painters borrowed techniques from previous “ism” movements, for example Impressionism and Cubism, the prominent painters of this movement had acquired a new, shocking style all their own. Surrealism, as an art movement, stressed the importance of expanding one’s mind in order to welcome other depictions of ‘reality’. Surrealist artists channelled their subconscious and their works reflected images of total mind liberation. Unlike the art movements before it, Surrealism came the closest to truly reflecting the human dreamlike state. While this essay will explore the purpose, techniques and lasting impact of the Surrealist art movement, it should be noted that this movement transcended the boundaries of the image arts world. Deep in the minds of human beings lies a vast ocean of emotions and experiences. The human mind is often misconstrued and simplified by those who possess one, but delving deeper into the mind and it’s processes you see a whole other world that is veiled beneath the surface. One of the most famous examples of the human mind is the image of an iceberg, what is on the surface is so minimal compared to the immense body that lies underneath. Sigmund Freud was the father of psychoanalysis and believed in the idea of the unconscious and subconscious that help power who we are. Through psychoanalysis Freud began to reclaim the self as an individual and stressed the importance of the external world and it’s direct role with the internal realm of an individual. Although it was originally found to be a sort of therapy for those with mental illnesses, it has an interesting and analytical and philosophical view of the self, and through this spawned new beliefs in philosophy. Through the establishment of the id, superego, and ego, and the past’s affect on the shaping the present state of the self, psychoanalysis reclaims the self for an individual and is successful in doing so.
