Over the years, science has come to play a big part in sports all around the world. Whether an athlete is shooting a ball, or even just running up and down a playing field, there comes in factors of science determining the outcome. The game of basketball features projectile motions and collisions, energy and momentum, and much more. By studying the physics behind a basketball shot, one can develop insight into the shooting conditions most likely to result in a successful shot. This paper will focus on the physics behind the most fundamental shot in all of basketball, the lay up, and the backspin on a jump shot.
The first incorporation of physics into basketball will be explained using the principle of inertia. A characteristic of the principle
of inertia is that if an object is initially fixed with respect to a moving reference frame and is suddenly released, the object will continue to move with an identical velocity as the reference frame at the instant it is released. In the sport of basketball, this situation is shown during shots taken while on the move. The most common shot taken on the move in basketball is the lay up. A lay up is a shot attempt taken from under the basket while one arm is extended to lay the ball in off the backboard or directly into the net. When a player makes it past the defense and dribbles towards the basket going at full speed for a lay up, he shoots the ball from a few feet away from the basket while still running. Some players over push their shots towards the basket, and it results in the ball going over the rim or bouncing off the backboard with too much speed. This is what occurs when one fails to take inertia into account of their shot. More than likely, a player shooting a lay up is already in motion making their way to the basket. When a player adds force onto the ball, they are adding on to the velocity that the ball already has from the player’s movement towards the basket. The correct way for the shot to be taken is for the player to shoot the ball vertical to his body when he is a few feet from the basket. By softly releasing the ball vertically a few feet away from the basket, the player is allowing the velocity that is already carrying the ball from his running motion to soar its way into the basket. An important part of shooting a basketball is the usage of the fingertips to shoot the ball rather than using the palm of one’s hand.
In lacrosse, the overhead shot is the most vital part of the game and the most important skill that an offensive player can have. The goal of the lacrosse shot is to create a scoring attempt with peak speed and accuracy. Each player is different regarding personal technique; however, the basis of each shot remains the same and are interpreted through six phases. The general purpose of this paper is to describe trunk rotation and its impact on power and accuracy which will maximize the potential of a lacrosse shot.
In basketball, the goal is to win the game. To do that your team needs to make more baskets than the opponent. So, I am going to teach you how to shoot correctly just in case you ever find yourself playing in a game. You need to have the correct form, proper stance, jump, and follow through.
For years it was thought that the golf swing was a solid piece of movement without any differentiating variables. Vast expansion in technology over the last 20 years has produced more information on the biomechanics of the golf swing. “ Golf Biomechanics applies the principles and technique of golf mechanics to the structure and function of the golfer in an effort to improve the golf technique and performance” (Hume P., Keogh J., and Reid D. 2005) Biomechanics, “The scientific discipline that applies mechanical principles and to understanding movement.” (Hume P., Keogh J., and Reid D. 2005) allows scientists to observe a golfer’s swing to near milliseconds to the point of impact. This is much more precise to previous measurements used such as video recordings, outlines, etc. Understanding how the swing works by breaking down the movements within the swing through visual aids emphasize the opportunity for a better swing and in turn, better golf. Studies of biomechanics within the golf swing have shown the sequential separation from torso to pelvis, disproving the original theory of a solid swing with continuous motion known as the X-factor. Before understanding how the biomechanics of the golf swing works with the X-factor, the basics of the swing must be established.
“There are four major components in shooting a shot. How tall you are, how far away from the basket you are, the ball’s angle, and the ball’s speed.” You’re height and how far away from the basket you are, will determine what angle you should shoot the ball and how fast you should make the ball go. If you are 5’8” and you are 15 feet away from the basket, you want to shot the ball at a 60° angle and make the ball go 18 miles per hour. This will give you a perfect swish.

K = ½ x m x Va² and so the formula for the rebounding ball must be K =
If you think about it, it’s almost impossible to measure the force that it takes to dribble a basketball, unless you have the right tools. Let’s just think about the basic physics that you should know. In order to dribble a basketball you need to apply enough force for the ball to go from your hand to the floor and back up to your hand. When the ball is in your hand it is holding potential energy. Potential energy is the energy that is about to be transferred into kinetic energy, which is when the energy is in use. The ball is in kinetic energy after it leaves your hand and starts to fall. So the force of gravity has to be less than the force of the bounce to keep the dribbling going.
SWOOSH. That’s all I hear in a gym full of 100 or more screaming fans and the sound of the buzzer going off as if it was never going to stop. As I laid on the ground gasping for air, I came to my senses that I just hit the game winning shot against Tates Creek high School with 3.7 seconds left. This shot was the shot of my career but who would of knew 7 years prior to that shot that I would of became a top rated shooting guard in the city of Lexington, Kentucky. My whole basketball career all I’ve known is to shoot a basketball jump shot, that was my duty, my job, my responsibility but never did I feel I was mechanically doing my whole life’s work wrong.
This essay is about the observation and analysis of the technique/composition of the performance of the performers on the video provided which is, a netball shooting video. Just for a beginning, in netball today, two basic shots are used which are, Australian high release and Caribbean shot. Netball has a unique style: the ball is released high and is usually released while shooter is stationary.
The most important part of the game of basketball is shooting the basketball, after all the object of the game is to put the basketball through the basket. A shot is taken by a player pushing on the ball and launching it toward the basket and upon the ball hitting the rim or backboard physics refers to this action as a contact force. Using this concept of contact force a shot can be calculated exactly. From a player’s height, the mass of the ball and a given position on the court which would include the distance from the basket it is possible to calculate the exact angle and force the shooter must apply to make a basket every time he or she shoots the ball. Of course if it were this easy basketball would not be as fun to watch or play. The problem with hitting a shot every time with the calculated angle and force is that the ball would have to travel toward the basket with the exact angle and force calculated for that particular shot. What makes this difficult is that the muscles in our body would have to be controlled flawlessly to push the ball with the exact amount of force and to give the ball the exact angle that is needed every time a shot is taken...
Momentum, commonly called inertia in motion, is the mass of an object x velocity, which is also written as mom=mv. If the velocity is not present, you can also use object x speed, which is written as mom=ms. Now think about this, which has more momentum, a large truck or a small car when they are both going at the same speed? The answer, the truck because it has more weight. Think about it, if you take an object with a large mass, it is going to result with a bigger momentum. If you change the situation and say that the truck is at rest, then the truck has no momentum.
There are many differences and some similarities between football and basketball. In this paper I will explain to the reader aspects that are similar and aspects that are different between the sport.
Let’s start with the very beginning on how basketball was created. On a cold winter day in Massachusetts, Dr. James Naismith was working at the YMCA with a bunch of young boys. Boys being boys, he decided to settle them down with making up a new game he created in his head. This game relied on accuracy and finesse, rather than just all strength. Only having two peach baskets, a soccer ball and an indoor gym, Dr. Naismith created basketball. Only staring with thirteen basic rules, Naismith placed
Gender, race, and sexuality are socially constructed systems that act as guidelines, or rules, for how people interact with each other. A social construct often appears to be reality. However, when you step back and look at these systems critically, it is easy to see that gender, race, and sexuality do not represent a true reality. An easy example of a social construct is the game of basketball. Our society has created the game of basketball; we have rules for how to play, what to play with, and what to wear. However, if you stop and think about it, you could actually play basketball any way you’d like, but the game is only called basketball when you play by the rules. The rules define the game and give it meaning. The same is true for social
Basketball is a extremely hazardous sport that involves rigorous amounts of jumping leaping and running. The basketball goal is often gloried due to the fact that it is the scoring avenue in the game of basketball on the contrary; the hazard that are associated the basketball goal itself can be monumental. The padding that is around the goal post of be a monumental asset to the establishment of safety when play the game of basketball. “Bucyrus High School junior Noah Lear died Wednesday two weeks after he was severely injured while playing basketball. Lear was playing basketball on Feb. 27 with three of his friends when a dunk attempt snapped the support pole causing the pole, backboard and hoop to come crashing down, landing on his head
