How did I end up stuck in Barra Da Tijuca at 5 AM on a Sunday? Well, it involves: a party under a bridge, a whorehouse, and a fair amount of alcohol. Th There are moments in life where, as events progress, you ask yourself “What the fuck is this?” If they are odd enough, you don’t say anything at all; you can only look on with a face of confusion and amazement with a slight aired of curiosity. These are things you cannot forget; even if you wanted to. Lucky for me, this moment happened the first weekend I went back to Brazil. Groundwork Upon planning my 2nd trip to Rio De Janeiro, I made a friend in a Facebook group which was comprised of expats living in Brazil and a few Brazilians scattered amongst the group’s members. I made a post asking about the best way to make friends in Rio and though I did receive a fair amount of feedback, no one was interested in meeting and possibly being friends or at least, associates. I though it was a good idea to meet at least one or two people who I could hang out with and start to build a social network. I would make getting around much easier because they could help navigate the public transportation system and also, have people to go out with. I went out solo a few times and ended up meeting new people but it is awkward to say the …show more content…
Caio was from the group and was the only one who messaged me regarding my post. He seemed cool. He traveled outside Brazil a few times and was looking to meet new people; to also, help him with his English. I didn’t mind since he spoke well. He seemed cool. We shared a lot of common of interests: women, money, how to spend free time, and churrasaco (Brazilian BBQ). To me, these were solid grounds to building a friendship; at the least, someone to hang out with on occasion. He offered to take me to a local party when I arrived. He mentioned going to parties where gringos (foreigners) don’t frequent. We kept in touch as time progressed toward my arrival in
Dia de los reyes magos is on Jan. 5 - Feb. 2 and the day is about the 3 wisemen, But January the 6th is the special day in Mexico….. this day represents the height of the Christmas season. This celebration is where it is stated that the kings, Melchor, Gaspar, and Balthasar, traveled by night all the way from the farthest confines of the Earth to bring gifts to Jesus, whom they recognized as the Son of God. As well as regal, the Three Kings are depicted as wise men, whose very wisdom is proved by their acknowledgement of Christ's divine status. Arrived from three different directions, the kings followed the light provided by the star of Bethlehem, which reportedly lingered over the manger where the Virgin Mary gave birth for many days. In
Have you ever made any friends via Facebook, Twitter, or Snapchat that you have never met before? I know I have through Twitter due to having the same interests. Some may say those friends are not really your friends, but virtual ones instead. In the article, “The Limits of Friendships,” by Maria Konnikova, she talks about friendships that are made virtually and in reality. The author argues that the use of social media has hindered friendships and face to face connections within one’s social circle, however, she does not address that they have met their closest support group through social media. Face to face connections help identify who one’s true friends are and they are more realistically made when it is in person rather than over social media, but there Konnikova fails to address the fact that social media has allowed many to connect
Why meet new people when your friends are at your fingertips?
My country is Honduras. Some people don't even know this country. Some people ask me where is Honduras, but the things I say is that "Honduras is wonderful places, even though they're bad people, or there no justice."I know that place could be wonderful if there is justice. In my life, I have lived in Honduras for 7 years, but I still remember a lot of things. Like in Honduras has wonderful beaches and landmarks. One of the wonderful things is the food. In Honduras, there is baleadas, tajadas, sopa de pescado, etc. One of the foods I like is the tajadas, they come from the platano macho. My mom is an expert in making tajadas. Whenever she told me "Hija quieres comer tajadas en la tarde (Daughter do you want to eat tajadas for dinner)",
Why do urban legends persist to this day? Urban legends persist to this day because if one person tells their family or friend then they might tell someone and they will tell some else and it will keep on going so much some people might think it’s real. This is the tale of El chupacabra that began in Puerto Rico in the late 1990s.
Using both English and Spanish or Spanglish the author Gloria Anzaldua explores the physical, cultural, spiritual, sexual and psychological meaning of borderlands in her book Borderlands/La Frontera: A New Mestiza. As a Chicana lesbian feminist, Anzaldua grew up in an atmosphere of oppression and confusion. Anzaldua illustrates the meaning of being a “mestiza”. In order to define this, she examines herself, her homeland and language. Anzaldúa discusses the complexity of several themes having to do with borderlands, mestizaje, cultural identity, women in the traditional Mexican family, sexual orientation, la facultad and the Coatlicue state. Through these themes, she is able to give her readers a new way of discovering themselves. Anzaldua alerts us to a new understanding of the self and the world around us by using her personal experiences.
Why do people undertake life changing missions while others only undertake missions to improve the day? Everyone has their own reasons for undertaking a mission. From survival, to striking it rich, everyone has a mission they want to accomplish. Ernesto and Apollo 13’s crew had different missions, but both needed to work hard and persevere to achieve their goals. Ernesto had to work hard to fit in, and determine who he could trust; whereas Apollo 13’s crew had to make quick decisions to survive.
...ercentage of people so long as we have enough "chance encounters" to fill these roles. It does present other problems, however, especially in places with high population density. These situations are so random and diverse that they're nearly impenetrable to ins. It'd probably be very beneficial to randomly talk to people we sat next to on the subway. We could learn about each other and make valuable business or personal contacts with no danger or downside. Regardless, would we even consider doing such a thing? Even if we did, neither the initiator or receiver of the interaction would feel special or consider it could become a real friendship. I could've selected anyone to chat with and you could've been selected by anyone. Interacting with others without an in may only be a faux pas because if it works too often, our dream of a friend-aligning force would be dashed.
It is a common occurrence that people have some sort of experience that they can not explain, and these experiences make for a great story likely to be told to everyone around them. Some experiences could be very minor, but in s...

Today was the day, the day that my parents and my little sister and I were going to go to Cancun, Mexico. Our flight left at 5:00 am, so we woke up bright and early at 2:00 am. We needed to be there 2 hours earlier and we still had to put our luggage in the car and drive there. We arrive at the Park and Go. We pay them and we get on the shuttle to take us to the airport. We get through security and go to a little cafe. My parents get some coffee and my sister and I get a bagel with cream cheese. “We have to go to gate 12A,” I told them.
Arriving in Lima, we were greeted by swarms of taxi drivers asking if we needed rides; “No Gracias, Señor,” was a phrase that became my go-to response. I laid eyes on my cousin and uncle, and instantly let out a sigh of relief, but was met with a punch in the face of the suffocating humidity of Lima. It was close to two in the morning, and in a short thirty hours, I would be on a plane ride going to Cusco. When we were on our way to my grandma’s house, where we would be spending the night, but cousin carefully approached the subject of Machu Picchu. He told my mom and I that the rain was heavy over there, and they may have to close the park for the week due to potential floods. My heart stopped and I was about to break down. My mom instantly saw the look on my face and said, “Don’t worry, I have a feeling the rain will slow
Many people only communicate with friends and acquaintances that they see every day. This means that often many people only talk to co-workers or fellow students. Even those that attend a place of worship or participate in a sport or hobby still limit the amount of people they include in their conversations. This often limits social circles and activities that a person is active in. While volunteering, someone may meet up to as many as twenty or more people in less than an hour. Participating in a small talk with a stranger that shares the same interests and is working towards the same cause might turn out to end up being more than just a conversation. The conversation may lead to a friendship. A fun way to bond with already existing friends and family may be to bring them along on project. Friends and relatives get to partake in the activity while realizing how eye opening everything can be. “One of the best ways to make new friends and strengthen existing relationships is to commit to a shared activity together.” (Saisan, Smith, and Kemp) A volunteer can also help improve their already existing rela...

One of the most important and illuminating plot points of the movie is the idea that they had sex with each other’s girlfriends. It is through the various scenes that involve it that we see not just the aggressive side of machismo as they physically attack each other as well as hurl both homophobic a classist insults as one another. Following their initial argument about Julio sleeping with Tenoche’s girlfriend Julio and
