Using both English and Spanish or Spanglish the author Gloria Anzaldua explores the physical, cultural, spiritual, sexual and psychological meaning of borderlands in her book Borderlands/La Frontera: A New Mestiza. As a Chicana lesbian feminist, Anzaldua grew up in an atmosphere of oppression and confusion. Anzaldua illustrates the meaning of being a “mestiza”. In order to define this, she examines herself, her homeland and language. Anzaldúa discusses the complexity of several themes having to do with borderlands, mestizaje, cultural identity, women in the traditional Mexican family, sexual orientation, la facultad and the Coatlicue state. Through these themes, she is able to give her readers a new way of discovering themselves. Anzaldua alerts us to a new understanding of the self and the world around us by using her personal experiences. Anzaldua comes from the borderlands between Mexico and the United States, specifically Texas. Anzaldua begins by giving the common definition of the borderlands as the physical space where two cultures meet. She describes la facultad as her sixth sense and thus adding another characteristic to her ‘alien element’. She mentions that those who are marginalized such as women, homosexuals, or foreigns are more likely to develop this sense. She describes this sense as a defense mechanism and a sense of awareness. Anzaldua wrote how she is able to “...sense the emotion someone is emitting... I feel a tingling on my skin when someone is staring at me or thinking about me” (61). I think that when she got bit by the serpent it opened her awareness and introduced her to this new sense known as la facultad.
