‘Barriers to effective communication’

Communication is simply the act of transferring information from one place to another. It is very important in our everyday lives as it allows us to pass on information to each other and around the world. There are many barriers that can block effective communication. These include listening barriers, our perceptions and our verbal communication. There are multitudes of ways in which the above barriers can limit communication.

Firstly, there are many reasons our communication is blocked by our listening. Some of these obstacles include environmental distractions, physical impairments or becoming over stimulated with the information we are being given. There are many environmental distractions that surround us such as loud or distracting noise. Some of this noise may be minimized. For example we can turn off or lower down music that we are listening to etc. Other noises we cannot minimize as it is out of our control, such as noises from a construction site or the many people surrounding us. Other examples of distractions we may encounter that affect our communication include feeling hungry, thirsty or needing to use the toilet. They affect our listening skills as our minds become preoccupied about our current needs.

We can also become disabled to listening effectively if we are in a poor physical or mental state. For example if we are suffering from exhaustion or anxiety, we may find it hard to communicate effectively. We may have to express that it is not a good time to talk as we are not in the right state to communicate properly. Also if a person has a hearing impairment it can be hard to communicate effectively. If the hearing impairment is mild, the person can assist it with a heari...

In conclusion, I have commented on the on the problem of ‘Barriers to effective communication’ and I feel that I have clearly stated many of the problems that block effective communication. I have shown and proved with examples that our communication is blocked by perceptions, verbal communication and by our listening.
