Cliché is the first barrier to effective communications. "If only I had a nickel for every cliché I 've heard," is an example. It 's a worn-out analogy that has been abused by society. These trite sayings blur the meaning from your intended use, and because of that, your message gets garbled. Relying on clichés can be a sign of a poor vocabulary and can affect how the clients see you or the company.
Jargon is our next hurdle to overcome. I believe jargon to be one of the most difficult to plow through when writing or speaking on a subject you 're most familiar with. Doctors communicate in doctor-speak, lawyers, in lawyer-speak, engineers, in engineer-speak, to name a few. While an oversimplification, you do, in a way, go to college to learn how to communicate with other doctors, lawyers, and engineers. When speaking to an audience that is unfamiliar with your lingo or catch phrases, you may leave them in the dark as to what you 're trying to state. Even a simple statement of "The WAN was down" makes some wonder, "What does that mean?" While they 're chewing on what you 're talking about, they 'll miss the rest of your point. Again, even if you explain that a WAN is a Wide Area Network, it may still leave your audience lost. To clarify, if you had simply said, "The network was down", it would express the issue while not requiring a degree

Slang is uncommon buzzwords that have a meaning only to those that are in-the-know. For instance, the sentence, "That mooley was so slay, he had every ROTFL" would be translated, "That standup comedian was so funny, he had everyone rolling on the floor laughing." While chatting once online, I came across a guy from the same neighborhood as my wife. To prove it, he wanted us to talk in that neighborhood 's slang. A neighbor used to say, "nuke it from orbit" to mean, "utterly destroy that spider in the house." Anyone outside our area would not comprehend this
The constant changing of technology and social norms makes difficult for different generations to understand one another and fully relate to each other. Diction and slang change as years pass and what is socially acceptable may have been prohibited in the previous generations.
diatribe, is popular in schools country-wide. In its way, this is a tour de force of black English and underworld slang, as
In the essay if Black English Isn’t a Language, Then Tell Me, What is? by James Baldwin and Mother Tongue by Amy Tan both shows idea of uses of slang and language in different context. In the essay if Black English Isn’t a Language, Then Tell Me, What is? Baldwin states that how language has changed and evolved overtime, Baldwin describes how black English were used as white English, in civil rights movement where blacks were treated as slaves and the used slang language to communicate so that the whites won’t understand. This slang was taken from black language and now everyone uses to make the communication short. In the essay Mother Tongue Tan explains that how language could affect people from different culture. Tan states that how Asian students in America struggle in English. Tan also states that her mother is smart but she couldn’t communicate in English. Tan thinks that’s a big disadvantage for her mother and people coming from different countries cannot show their talent because of their weakness in communication.
Since the 1930’s until now, studies show that about 64% of kids and teens have been using slang terms in their school work. It is amazing what some of them are. Slang is used all of the time by almost all people and has changed a lot over the past decades. In To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee uses a child’s perspective to show how slang has changed from the 1930’s until today.
William Lutz in “the world of doublespeak” states that jargon is the specialized language of a trade, profession, or similar group, such as that used by doctors, lawyers, engineers, or educators” (391). Also to someone not associated with a specific group and their language jargon will not make sense. It is often used by individuals who wish to sound more intelligent or important. As mentioned in “the world of doublespeak” by Lutz that “jargon as doublespeak often makes the simple sound complex” (391). For example, when the news says intruders instead of bad people or execution instead of killing or when lawyers use the term “involuntary conversion” of property when discussing the loss or destruction of property that is considered using jargon. Lutz finds mainly doctors, lawyers and high educators that are responsible for the spread of jargon
Slang is the key reason words take on new meaning. A teenage girl may say a guy is hot! This does not mean he is sweating, it means he is good looking. This is an example of slang. People familiar with slang will understand this meaning, while those unfamiliar will not. As our culture changes so does our slang and words take on new meanings. Let’s take a closer look at the word burn. Some of the definitions may surprise you.
African American Slang has had many other names: Ebonics, Jive, Black English, and more. The Oxford English Dictionary defines slang (in reference to language) in three different ways: 1) the special vocabulary used by any set of persons of a low or disreputable character; language of a low and vulgar type 2) the special vocabulary or phraseology of a particular calling or profession; the cant or jargon of a certain class or period 3) language of a highly colloquial type, considered as below the level of standard educated speech, and consisting either of new words or of current words employed in some special sense. Whatever one’s perspective on slang, it is a natural and inevitable part of language. In this paper I will discuss examples of current slang being used that some people may not understand.
Catchphrases change within the English languages just like the tide. One day people may be saying “biting off more than you can chew” (Lasiter) to saying “up shit creek without a paddle” (Martin) the next; both meaning something along the lines of being in an unpleasant predicament. When using a catchphrase one can get across their meaning in a more colorful and youthful manner than just saying “you’re in an unpleasant predicament at the moment.” Another example would be, “looney toons,” (Lasiter) “fruity as a fruit cake,” (Lasiter) and “bats in the belfry” (Martin) all meaning crazy or eccentric. Some of these catchphrases are just passing fades and others timeless and can go on for centuries more. Our catchphrases are influenced by the culture and technology around us; such as “looney toons,” derived from the T.V show, Looney Toons, created by the Warner Brothers Studios. If the television was never developed the Looney Toons characters may have never been created; thus, the phrase “looney toons” would have never been thought of. Formality can have an impact on whether or not a catchphrase is used in conversation.
When you hear the word communicate many ideas come to mind. To some it brings thoughts of face to face conversations others think of internet based video conferencing. There are many ways to communicate with others in this day and age. Leaders have many tools and methods with which they can communicate with those around them. They must evaluate each situation to determine which method or methods will provide the desired result for what we are trying to communicate to their teams so they can avoid the confusion that comes when they choose the wrong communication method. (Gendron 2015) In this paper we will discuss several communication methods available to leaders and then look at what are some common challenges and barriers they face when
According to Anne Curzan, a language historian, it's important to note that humans make dictionaries, therefore a dictionary only provides the opinions of the most commonly used meanings of a word. It's not a set list of “right definitions” because people use them differently for how they see fit. Words’ meanings can evolve over time due to slang usage and the influence of other languages and cultures. When a bigger group of people discover a slang version of a word, it might become popular, which could make that the most common meaning for the word. Also, a word in one society might mean something completely different in another society. If languages or cultures intertwine with others, then the common definitions used might change with it. All of this can contribute to the evolution of a word's meaning, and this is acceptable because even though words may change over time, so does the language as a whole
Every body’s language says something different about them. They have their own form of language, whether its proper, slang, a particular phrase, or other forms of language. The language varies from city to city and state to state. Most of the time words have the same meaning they just have a different pronunciation in different places. Sometimes they do have other meanings as well. When you go to college and meet different people from different places you begin to learn their language and way of speaking.
The six major barriers to communication according to McLean (2010) are the use of clichés, jargon, slang, sexist and racist language, euphemisms, and doublespeak. These were discussed in the context
