Humans have distinct traits and features that make us who we are. Humans have the ability to express emotion and we have a conscious mind. In this day and age, technology is becoming more and more important in all fields of life. Robots, machines, and computers are all examples of technological advances being made. In the medical field machines and robots are now performing surgeries on patients. A ventilator is a machine that keeps a person alive by delivering oxygen to the lungs and the rest of the body. But, what classifies that machine as not being human? William James coined the term “Automatic Sweetheart”, meaning a soulless body devoid of a conscious. The cultural studies approach to an open text allows the reader to focus on the culture of a specified society. He/she can study the use of social effects and construction of reality on the people or land. "According to the Handbook of Critical Approaches to Literature "cultural studies involve scrutinizing a cultural phenomenon and drawing conclusions about the changes in that phenomenon over a period of time" (Geurin 240)." When utilizing the cultural studies approach, the reader must search the whole text for an overall range of situations and reasons why culture would shape a society. This cultural evidence can be found in Tim O'Brien's "Sweetheart of the Song Tra Bong" because of its wide use of gender construction, levels of power, and the theme of isolation.
Nowadays technology allows us to upload all the memory of a dead person on the computer and create a robot. But can we say the robot is a person? Or can we say the person is still alive? The robot indeed has memory, even the personality of this person before he passes on. But robots and human are different, human have flesh and blood, robots, however, are made by metal. Although it is technologically achievable that robots can react respectively toward different feelings such as pain and itch, these reactions are artificial and they are not real “feelings”, metal would not feel the same way as skin feels.
A major falling point of robots and machines when placed in a human’s position is that robots cannot improvise. Robots can only do what they are programmed to do. if Damasio is right, emotions are ‘improvised’ by the human brain even before someone is conscious of what they are feeling. Therefore it is even harder to make machines feel true emotions. An example of this exists in Ray Bradbury’s short story “August 2026.” A completely automated house survives after nuclear warfare has devastated the Earth. Cheerful voices go on announcing schedules and birth dates, the stove prepares steaming hot food right on time, and robotic mice keep the house spotless and free of dust- in eerie contrast to the barren and destroyed city surrounding it. The house lets nothing in, closing its shutters even to birds, but lets in a sick and famished stray dog, which limps into the house and dies. The robotic mice think nothing of the dead dog but a mess that needed cleaning up: “Delicately sensing decay at last, the regiments of mice hummed out as softly as blown gray leaves in an electrical wind. Two-fifteen. The dog was gone. In the cellar, the incinerator glowed suddenly and a whirl of sparks leaped up the chimney.” The house, seeming so cheerful, caring for its attendants, has no compassion or reverence for the dog. It goes without saying that a person's gender, racial and social origins influence their participation in sports. Particular races and genders often dominate certain sports. African Americans, for example, tend to dominate football and basketball, while Caucasians tend to dominate ice hockey. The same holds true for gender as well. Football is an entirely male dominated sport, while horseback riding, gymnastics and figure skating are much more female oriented. How and why did these divisions come about? Determining the origin of gender goes beyond the scope of this paper, however one can speculate about how gender classifications and stereotypes affect one's role in the sports arena.
In contrast, with the previous three articles which embody the development of robots as a useful tool for human growth, Headrick focus on the ethic and legal conflicts that will arise with the growth of robots. The creation of artificial intelligence in human lives will bring many unique situations. Headrick begins his article with an analogy of a driverless car in a parking lot. The car is programmed to go straight so it may not see certain things and react as quickly or effectively, to insure no lives are harmed. If a human were behind the wheel these situation would be unlikely to occur. With the spread of autonomous systems is it really beneficial to put the safety of humans in the hands of robots. Will our laziness to make our lives easier with lifeless objects jeopardized our existence. Headrick uses multiple Headrick points out real life situations where robots have jeopardized human livelihood. “The more we task robotics to act on our behalf," "one of the first questions is, 'who is responsible' in the moment of truth.… we don't have an answer for that yet” (Headrick 1). A Mad Girl’s Love Song In Sylvia Plath’s poem “A Mad Girl’s Love Song”, it is hard to determine whether the speaker is mad or going mad. Plath, along with all women in this time period, were defined by their relationship to a man. When a woman was abandoned by her beloved, it was Earth-shattering, as it still can be for many women today. Before the reader even gets into the poem itself, the speaker is already described as “mad” and this word has multiple connotations.
The life of an adolescent varies from day to day. For every good thing, most likely there is a bad thing. This doesn’t always happen, but this constant changing of moods can greatly affect the stress one feels. Adolescents will look for some form of relief, this often being music. Turning on the radio while doing homework can help people stay relaxed and get through an assignment. Drifting off for thirty minutes while you listen to your favorite band on a pair of headphones can be the cure also. It is not what an individual turns on that matters, as long as it is what they like. Not everyone is going to listen to Top 40 music, but a majority will so we focus on the top five songs. The top five songs of today do not differ that much thematically from when I was fourteen with the most common theme being love.
Asimov’s robots can be described as clumsy, hard-working, cost-efficient, soulless, strong, fast, obedient, human-made, a cleaner better breed, more human than man.

What makes a human being different from a machine that possesses human characteristics? The idea that there really isn’t any difference here is a startling thought. Human beings retain the need to be different, especially from machines. People want to be distinguished as human and not like any other species, but Multivac is given a voice of its own, “…with a beauty that never quite vanished no matter how often it was heard,” (Asimov 160). Multivac is distinguished from human beings and can be defined as human because of its qualities. “It was becoming constantly more aware of is own worth and less likely to bear trivialities with patience,” (Asimov 162). Multivac was growing and becoming more intelligent; it was learning. When Bakst speaks about Multivac it sounds like he is talking about another person: “Yes, I will have to talk to Multivac,” and “Bakst had to depend on Multivac’s good will,” (Asimov 162). Bakst knows that he needs to treat Multivac like a friend; to get on its good side so he can later kill it. Bakst follows the rule of “keep friends close and your enemies even closer.”
“Man is a robot with defects,” (Emile Cioran, The Trouble With Being Born). Humans' are not perfect, but we seem to strive for perfection, so who is to say that in the future robots will not out number the human race on Earth? In Star Trek: The Next Generation, the character Data is very much a robot and not human, being composed of inorganic materials but designed with a human appearance (an android), but does that make it just a robot? In the show it is proposed that for one to be a sentient being and a person they must possess three qualities, intelligence, self-awareness, and consciousness. In accordance to these three conditions it is obvious that the character Data is in fact a sentient being with the qualities of being a person.
A.I. Artificial Intelligence is a Steven Spielberg science fiction drama film, which tells the story of a younger generation robot, David, who yearns for his human mother’s love. David’s character stimulates the mind-body question. What is the connection between our “minds” and our bodies? It is apparent that we are personified entities, but also, that we embrace “more” than just our bodies. “Human persons are physical, embodied beings and an important feature of God’s intended design for human life” (Cortez, 70).
To love is to experience the interactions of emotions between two beings. Artificial intelligence beings lack the capability to love; they cannot feel, as humans cannot program emotions into their software. Many argue that artificial intelligence respond in a manner similar to that of humans, resulting in a spark of love from the subsequent conversations. However, these responses are merely chosen from a predetermined databank. Therefore, the love felt by the human and machine cannot be considered real love. “Love, as you’ll see, is not lasting” (Fredrickson 108), it must be renewed to further the continuation of relationships, and thus, emotionless AIs cannot make strides towards the betterment of their relationship with a human being. This oversteps the ethical boundaries regarding love because technology is essentially consuming the love lives of others. Those who are romantically involved with machines lose the ability to create and maintain relationships with other human beings, as they are being conditioned to believe love between a machine and a human is more worthwhile. As a result of the lack of connections between technophiles and the rest of humanity, many technophiles turn to artificial intelligence since they are more convenient, easier to interact with, and generate less painful experiences. In case of emergencies, robots could reduce the percentage of fatal damages that occurs through these cases. In fact, humans’ lives are much valuable and precious rather than robots, in which societies could use robots to scarify through the dangerous situation for the sake of rescuing people. In addition, dangerous situations such as firefighting or earthquake require much effort, precision, and scarifying in the evacuation process. Furthermore, a beneficial feature that could help robots to coexist through the risky situations easily and preform the rescuing mission perfectly is that robots do not have feelings or emotions.
