Authentic leaders establish connected relationships. A connected relation means to build positive and enduring relationships, which makes followers do their best. In addition, authentic leaders surround themselves with good people and work to help others grow and develop (Daft 2014). I have always been good at building relationships but they are not the type of relationships that go beyond being an acquaintance or coworker. I see others around me build these relationships that go beyond the workplace and turn into true friendships. I have been told that I need to be able to build stronger relationships if I want to continue to grow my career. I am an introvert and enjoy my private time but I have been told that I need to break out of that introvert mentality and socialize more, even if I don’t want to. There are times when I must sit through and listen to a very boring story that a coworker or another person is telling. It can be tough to show interest and not let it show that the story is very boring and I am losing interest fast. In the Seven Habits of Highly Effective People it states that “if we were to summarize in one sentence the single most important principle I have learned in the field of interpersonal relationships, it would be this: Seek first to understand, then to be understood (Stephen R. Covey). One technique may be to know that even though I think the story is boring it is very interesting to them and I should see if from their perspective. Authentic leaders are known for being real. Basically, what you see is what you get. They are not fake or mislead others and they are happy with who they are as a person and are striving to be better. I can do a better job in this
