Assignment 1.1: Treatment Group Proposal, Part A Thesis An underserved population I would like to prepare a therapy group proposal for is the geriatric population struggling with depression. Elders have lived through many different changes in their lifetime. There are multiple reasons why elders can feel isolated, low motivation, and change in sleep patterns. Elders need assistance with finding motivation to participate in daily activities. An example could be that the elders have experienced multiple changes and need assistance on how to manage change. We discuss how mindfulness activities assist the elderly population. Demographics The population will be between 65 years and older, both male and female participants. The demographic population …show more content…
Participants will be asked what religion they practice (if any) to see if there are any differences in how to cope with feelings related to depression. Intervention One of the interventions I have selected for this population is having rational therapy during a one-on-one session. This one-to-one therapy session will discuss how many times a week the participant interacts with other participants. Also, how many times a week the participant engages in the group activities? It is important for elders to feel a sense of belonging as they can easily feel burdened by their adult children or other members of their family. Some elders may feel that due to close friends and family passing, they could be dealing with unsettling feelings. Some social work interventions that already exist are using the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale (DASS) (Raeisvandi et al, 2023). The DASS scale was created to measure the severity of the symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress (Raeisvandi et al, 2023). Impact: Depression affects the health of the elderly as they are prone to many illnesses. Some elders can be prone to symptoms such as: chronic joint pain, gastrointestinal problems, sleep disturbances, and appetite (Trivedi, …show more content…
According to Zastrow and Hessenauer (2017), community-based social service agencies assist with providing psychoeducation. I would also suggest using symptom management groups for elders who have been diagnosed with depression. I want to see how participants feel empowered by being able to manage their feelings, control impulses, and reduce problematic thinking patterns (Zastrow & Hessenauer, 2017). Case conceptualization and treatment planning is used by therapist to assist in determining a client’s diagnosis, goals, and treatment plan that is most effective in determining the issues surrounding the clients diagnosis. It is crucial that the client’s treatment plan is specific to the individual, is relational and appropriate to the needs of the client.
Case conceptualization explains the nature of a client’s problem and how they develop such problem ( Hersen, & Porzelius, p.3, 2002) In counseling, assessment is viewed as a systematic gathering of information to address a client’s presenting concerns effectively. The assessment practice provides diagnostic formulation and counseling plans, and aids to identify assets that could help the client cope better with concern that they are current. Assessment is present as a guide for treatment and support in the “evaluation process. Although many methods can be employed to promote a thorough assessment, no one method should be used by itself” (Erford, 2010, p.269-270). Eventually, it is the counselor's job to gain adequate information concerning the client and the client's presenting concerns to establish an effective treatment strategy. Using a combination of assessment techniques increases the likelihood of positive interventions and promotes successful treatment (Erford, 2010, p.271). A case conceptualization reflects how the professional counselor understands the nature of the presenting problems and includes a diagnostic formulation. Case conceptualization organizes assessment data into meaningful outline, applying research, and theory to make sense of client’s current problem.
283). Therefore; any counseling program wanting to make a real change should be held to the highest standards and be evaluated for current and future progress (Houser, 2015). As applied to this paper the population and the goals of the group counseling program should be clearly laid out. The definition of progress should be defined and if a specific timeline for progress is desired it should be made clear. Ultimately; conducting a program evaluation of the proposed program in this paper will demonstrate if the existence of such a program is working and if so then the evaluation can serve as a platform to ensure its

Depression is a common mental disorder that affects approximately 350 million people worldwide (World Health Organization (WHO), 2014). Likewise, Tutty, Bubbins-Wagner and Rothery’s (2015) evaluation of the 14-week therapy program, You’re Not Alone also demonstrated improved mental wellbeing of the participants based on the interventions like character building, positive reinforcement and active role play which highlighted aggressive, abusive characters and the typical behaviours in relationships. the ability to interatw with a patient,
Depression is a serious mental health illness which affects an individuals’ mind, body and mood. o conducting group or individual treatment to help children and adults in a mental health center learn to cope with daily activities
During our group discussions we brainstormed many ideas and communities we felt we wanted to help collectively. We figured this would be a pivotal step in deciding the community we wanted to work with and the impact our group wanted to make. Many of these communities included special education children, homeless people, long term hospital patients and many more. During our brainstorming sessions many of our group members were extremely excited about the ideas that were being generated. One of our biggest challenges was not committing to any one idea that would become too extensive.
The importance of family and friends is critical in for mentally ill patients. This is especially true for women with low income (Ichiro Kawachi, Lisa F. Berkman, 2001). Promoting more counseling and support group can increase the quality of mental health because individuals are able to talk their problems and express themselves without any restraints. Home counseling for families with children under the age of five can help train parent to become more efficient parents by enhancing their interaction with their children to increase mental health for their children and by improving family and work balance. Senior also benefit from social interaction. Seniors are at risk for many mental illness because of social isolation, death of family member and loss of some rights like driving. So being able to talk to someone decreases their chances of developing
