Argumentative Essay: Should School Start Later?

Imagine schools across the district filled with tired and lazy students. Is it a bad scene? Unfortunately, this is how a lot of the student body in some schools are feeling. Since this is a problem within districts, some think that a later start time would be good because of the health benefits, academic proficiency, and more sleep for the weary. Schools should start later because of the many health benefits obesity, mood swings, and less car accidents for the high school students. According to the article, “Should Schools Start Later” with enough sleep students “have a lower risk of being in car accidents and have fewer health problems, such as depression, mood changes, and being overweight.” This shows that later start times means more sleep and more sleep means less health risks. In addition to health benefits, there is higher academic proficiency. A study “shows that well-rested students get better grades, have higher standardized test scores, and miss fewer days of school.” Every parent loves to see their child perform well in school, and a later start time will help students get these better grades and their parents will be proud. According to Danny Lewin, a sleep specialist at Children’s National Health System in Washington D.C. “Adolescents have a deeply programmed biological [clock] to go to bed later and wake later.” This shows that kids naturally stay up late and wake up later. From personal experience, not too long ago I was at a track meet in Dayton, by the time our Sheridan team got back it was 11:00 pm and we were tired. The next day I’m really tired, and struggling to keep myself awake. Our growing bodies need sleep to function properly. Students are going to start feeling tired and lazy.
