The topic most talked about is if college players should be paid or not. There are people all around trying to get these young men and women to be paid as college athletes. This kind of argument has been going on for years and years but still hasn’t been passed. “I'm interested in seeing the people who produce the revenue share a teeny, tiny slice of it”(Wilbon 1).The quote Wilbon made sounds only fair. The actions taken can lead to some harmful issues...tax increase maybe. “What if people in the business of money took $1.3 billion off the top, invested it, sheltered it and made it available to provide a stipend to college athletes, how could anybody stand on principle and argue against paying the people who make the events possible in the first …show more content…
There are people who think it could turn out being the worst thing in the world, then there are others who think it is very much needed. “Because so many athletic departments run at a deficit, it's difficult to make the case that schools should pay regular salaries to athletes, even football players who produce more income than anybody” (Wilbon 1). So here Wilbon believes since they’re bringing all this money in with the work they are putting in they deserve to be paid. So yea the people that are saying the players should get paid are giving many examples on why. (Should college athletes be paid?) “They are called student athletes for a reason because they are students first and having them paid would be putting athletes before them being students”. So the students that said this are saying the college students being paid would distract them from focusing on school and have them more focused on the money. “The promise of a free education is not enough anymore if the NCAA wants to act as a money making business, and not reward those who help make it profitable” (Brill 1). So to Brill he believes as an athlete a free ride isn’t enough anymore because they have the put their lives on the line everyday for the sport they love so he thinks the players should be paid. (Should College athletes Get paid) “Athletes are in school to get an education. They …show more content…
Yet the money being made off this event is not trickling down to the players, who are the stars of the tournament” (Patterson 1). Again you see Tiffany giving examples on why they should be paid because the players bring in all the money so they should get a profit of the money that they are making. Some people think the college players shouldn’t be paid because they are not responsible financially. “One aspect I find lacking in this topic discussion is the ignoring of the very real fact that a lot of athletes are very financially irresponsible” (Patterson 1). There was a video on if the players should be paid or not and students took a survey. Only 10 out of 100 said yes. (Should college athletes be paid) The students were saying how they should not be paid because that would make them athletes before students and how they are supposed to be students first. The video on if college athletes should be paid also explains how if they were to be paid that the revenue could be given out to the players. They believe your skill also depends on how much you get paid. Besides all that there is a bigger problem, the actions taken can violate Title XI. Which states no person in the United States shall, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance. So paying them could be hard to maneuver
There are many situations in the modern day where too many people cause controversy about paying college athletes. They see this as the coarse issue, but paying the athletes will not solve the big problem that you do not think about at first. Although, there are many college athletes that are struggling to get through life and a salary for their hard work will be appreciated, it just will not solve the big issue. This issue would just become worsened.
College athletes are undoubtedly some of the hardest working people in the world. Not only are they living the life of an average student, they also have a strenuous schedule with their specific sport. One of the most discussed topics in the world of college athletics is whether or not student-athletes should be paid money for playing sports. The people who disagree with the idea have some good arguments to make. Primarily that the athletes get to go to school for free for playing sports. Another argument is that if student-athletes were to get paid then it would ruin the amateurism of college sports. People who are against paying the athletes do not want to see the young people become focused on money. “Paying student-athletes would dramatically shift their focus away from where it should be - gaining knowledge and skills for life after college” (Lewis and Williams). This is very understandable because one of the biggest reasons college sports are so popular is because the athletes play for school pride and for bragging rights. They play because they enjoy the game, not because it is their job. Most people that disagree with the idea of paying the athletes fail to realize what really goes on behind the scenes. At most Universities around the country the bulk of the income the school receives is brought in through the athletic programs. In fact the football and basketball teams usually bring in enough money to completely pay for the rest of the athletic programs all together. To get a better understanding of how much has changed in the world of college sports a little history must be learned.
There has been an extensive debate over the years about college athletes being paid and I honestly don’t see why there is a debate about it at all. The NCAA has strict rules about players receiving benefits from the school in forms of helping players and their families in the form of paychecks or even helping pay bills. College sports bring in an enormous amount of money for the schools every year and are expected to be given nothing in return. Sports do not only bring in money to schools but also more students and fans. The NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) have taken several players’ records and rewards from them for the simple fact of getting benefits from the school and that is just not acceptable (Allen 115). Athletes are just like every other student in the way of having to pay for housing, food, bills, and more. Having to balance school and sports gives athletes no time to have jobs which means they do not have a way to bring in money to pay for the essentials of going to
Pros and Cons of Athletes Being Paid Today in the sports era, there are some of the most talented collegiate football and basketball players. The real question is ‘should college athletes be paid’? Some of the players are so good that people think they should play on a professional level to where they should be paid. There are more people who believe collegiate players should not get paid; than those who believe they should be paid while playing a college sport.
A commonly brought up argument is whether or not college athletes should get paid. College athletes put their bodies on the line every time they play. Injuries happen in college sports all the time. Paying these athletes is the least the NCAA could do. College sports are very time consuming, and some athletes cannot get a great education because of this.
An article, “Should College Student Athletes be Paid,” also brings up an NCAA commitment under the collegiate model which includes institutions creating an environment in which athletes’ activities promote further education. Colleges have the responsibility to create a learning environment, and paying players for participation in sports would inhibit that environment. College athletics are for the purpose of providing entertainment and activity to exist with the intention of attaining higher education. College athletes choose to participate in sports as part of their educational experience, but sports should not become the focus of their college
College athletes have a lot on their daily agenda such as waking up for morning practice, going to class after that, and then going back to practices on top of having a social life. But some people believe that college athletes should be paid for what they do but others look at the different ways they are already being paid. College athletes devote their career on these sports. Some people believe that college athletes get paid in scholarships to go to school. College athletes could get paid in the future but it’s not happening anytime soon.
There are many different ideas and plenty of controversy about if a college athlete should or should not get paid while playing for them even though they already have a scholarship. Many people believe that the athletes shouldn't get paid because its can take away from their competitive edge or even cause legal trouble for the school. I believe they deserve to be paid because they bring in tons of revenue for the school and it would also overcome some of the issue they face while being an athlete. In the NCAA right now they don't pay the athletes anything extra besides their scholarship because of the principle of amateurism.
College athletes should not be paid Do you think college athletes should be paid? Many people think college athletes should be paid like professional athletes, while others think they shouldn’t because they are basically already getting paid with scholarships. College Athletes should not be paid to play because they’re basically already getting paid with scholarships, schools might not make as much money as others, players might think the pay is unfair, and if one sports program gets paid, then all the other programs will demand to be paid.
There are no reasons to support why college athletes shouldn't be played. If asked whether or not they should be paid popular opinion tends to say “Why not”. The real question to be asked isnt whether or not they deserve it but instead “ “If the NCAA weren’t colluding against them, would they get paid?” And the answer is, “Yes, they would.” We all should have the
Student athletes are students. They are not employees” (Zirin 110). Therefore, college athletes would not be paid because critics believe it may diminish the importance of a college education. Bob Costas, a famous sports announcer, once said, “I think that argument [of paying college athletes] is predicated on a woeful premise, which is that really, the education doesn’t matter that much” (Finkel). However, many student-athletes do care about their education.
Patterson’s point is that they definitely should be paid so they don’t come out of college with a ton of debt. According to Brooke Anderson, sister of a collegiate athlete, they do need money to buy food on campus. Bassically this means that college athletes need money in order to buy food on campus. According to Toptention.com student athletes should be compensated, “Renting or buying suits for obligatory banquets and fundraisers is dear, particularly when the athlete has no selection in whether or not they will attend.” This means that if there is a ceremony, they should be paid so they can by themselves a nice suit.
Should College Players Be Paid? There is a controversy on college players getting paid to play, I think that they should not be paid to play. Firstly, most of the athletes are awarded full-ride scholarships to college. For example, “Kicker Lucky for Free UCF Education” reporter for Orlando Sentinel Mike Bianchi, shares factual information on the paying of college athletes (Bianchi).
College athletes getting paid has been a big debate for a while now. It is a big topic during big college sporting events such as beginning of football season and NCAA tournaments. College players put in a lot of time to entertain us but they should not get paid. One major reason why they shouldn't get paid is because they get scholarships from the schools which helps them get into the college so they can represent and be apart of the school.
During the discussion, I was able to make better connections as to why some people would think that the players should be paid to play. One being that the players do not have time to get a job because of all the time they put into the practice and games for a particular sport. Another reason was that the NCAA makes a substantial profit off of the players who are being highly marketed for their hard work and dedication to the sport. Lastly, the players are putting their bodies and career on the line every time they get on the field or court, risking every thing before they even have to opportunity to become a professional athlete. I understand why some believe that athletes should be paid.
