Reaction Paper Regarding the topic, whether or not student athletes should be paid to play sports, I am in the middle. I understand why some people believe that athletes should be paid and I understand why others believe that they should not be paid. But, I guess that is because I do not know a lot about sports or what top athletes already receive. If I had more knowledge about the topic, then maybe I could make a stronger opinion about the topic. During the discussion, I was able to make better connections as to why some people would think that the players should be paid to play. One being that the players do not have time to get a job because of all the time they put into the practice and games for a particular sport. Another reason was that the NCAA makes a substantial profit off of the players who are being highly marketed for their hard work and dedication to the sport. Lastly, the players are putting their bodies and career on the line every time they get on the field or court, risking every thing before they even have to opportunity to become a professional athlete. I understand why some believe that athletes should be paid. …show more content…
It is easy to see that athletes already receive significant compensation for not being paid to play through scholarships, game apparel, help through school and special treatment through university faculty. A lot can be said when talking about what university athletes receive. Especially, top athletes who receive substantial opportunities and are being highly marketed before their career even takes off. These top athletes receive money in one way or another. I understand it takes a lot to be an athlete; however, some athletes are receiving money in more ways than just one. So, in the end I see this point of view to, where athletes should not be paid to play when they already receive some much compensation for not getting
College athletes should not be paid it will ruin college sports forever. Some people believe that college athletes should be paid by the school because of all of the hard work they put in however they shouldn’t be paid because there is no fair way to pay every college athlete. There are many reasons that college athletes shouldn’t be paid one of the main reasons is that colleges don’t have enough money, the second reason is that they already get money in the form of scholarships, and there is no fair way to pay each college athlete.
College athletes are undoubtedly some of the hardest working people in the world. Not only are they living the life of an average student, they also have a strenuous schedule with their specific sport. One of the most discussed topics in the world of college athletics is whether or not student-athletes should be paid money for playing sports. The people who disagree with the idea have some good arguments to make. Primarily that the athletes get to go to school for free for playing sports. Another argument is that if student-athletes were to get paid then it would ruin the amateurism of college sports. People who are against paying the athletes do not want to see the young people become focused on money. “Paying student-athletes would dramatically shift their focus away from where it should be - gaining knowledge and skills for life after college” (Lewis and Williams). This is very understandable because one of the biggest reasons college sports are so popular is because the athletes play for school pride and for bragging rights. They play because they enjoy the game, not because it is their job. Most people that disagree with the idea of paying the athletes fail to realize what really goes on behind the scenes. At most Universities around the country the bulk of the income the school receives is brought in through the athletic programs. In fact the football and basketball teams usually bring in enough money to completely pay for the rest of the athletic programs all together. To get a better understanding of how much has changed in the world of college sports a little history must be learned.

In summary college athletes should be paid because they are too busy to have a job, the NCAA has enough money and they can put in salary caps so everybody get paid
“Should NCAA Athletes Be Paid?” US News. U.S. News and World Report, Apr. 2013. Web. 05
I have decided to write a response paper to Ekow N. Yankah’s: “Why N.C.A.A.? Athletes Shouldn’t Be Paid”. Although I enjoyed reading his perspective, I do not agree with his statement which addresses that student-athletes shouldn't get paid. Universities are using their student-athlete’s popularity to promote their athletics program, while the student-athletes are unable to promote their own image. Student-athletes work hard day in and day out, basically like having a full-time job.
A question that has been rising to the surface lately is “should college athletes be paid a salary?” One cannot get on the internet now a day and not see some kind of college sport headline. The world of college sports has been changed greatly the past decade due to college athletes. These athletes make insurmountable amounts of money and an unbelievable amount of recognition for the universities. The athletes that provide and make a ton of revenue for the colleges also spend a huge amount of their time practicing and staying committed to sports, and have to maintain good grades in school which requires quite a bit of overtime. Because college athletes generate massive amounts of revenue and put in massive amounts of personal time for their individual universities, colleges need to financially compensate players for their contributions. The colleges that these superstars represent are reaping all of the benefits of the accomplishments the athletes have, yet the big named players are making nothing from what they do.
Many people can easily picture this scene in their minds: the roaring crowds, the smell of easy- to-eat foods, and the thousands of people all dressed in the same colors. That’s a description of game day at a major college. College sports bring in a lot of money, yet their players don’t receive any money. Many people view this as something that needs to be changed while others believe that only professionals should be compensated. In the essays “Let Stars Get Paid” and “College Athletes Should Not Be Paid”, both authors give their opinions on whether or not college athletes should be paid. College athletes should not be paid because they already receive many benefits from being athletes.
The argument whether a student-athlete should be paid to play or not be paid is one that spans the ages. College sports are considered to be of amateur status by the NCAA. Therefore, they believe student-athletes should not receive a pay check to participate in a sport. However, on the other end of the spectrum, many critics believe that student-athletes should receive pay for play because not only are they participating in a sport, they are entertaining the spectators. They believe that if performers in the entertainment industry are paid, why not pay the college-athletes?
College athletes generate millions of dollars for their schools each year, yet they are not allowed to be compensated beyond a scholarship due to being considered amateurs. College athletes are some of the hardest working people in the nation, having to focus on both school courses and sports. Because athletics take so much time, these student-athletes are always busy. College football and basketball are multi-billion dollar businesses. The NCAA does not want to pay the athletes beyond scholarships, and it would be tough to work a new compensation program into the NCAA and university budgets. College athletes should be compensated in some form because they put in so much time and effort, generating huge amounts of revenue.
The college athletes of their respective sports today, have the opportunity of showcasing their talents in competition on local and national programming on a regular basis which has lately brought attention this controversy, paying college athletes. The issue was brought on by the athletes over time, then caught onto coaches, sports columnists, and fans. The athletes dedicate themselves to the sport to a caliber comparable to the professional tier. The idea of paying the athletes could be considered as they play major factor in reputation of their schools, as well as funds for their schools. However most colleges do not have profitable sports teams. Thus, paying athletes would prove to be a very difficult endeavor and this could destroy college athletics as we know them today.
When the football player walked into his dorm room he dropped his old cleats and wondered when he was going to have time to study for his exams. Because he was practicing so much and didn’t have time to find a job. Many think that since college athletes are getting a scholarship they should not be paid even though they work hard, and they make money for the school. College athletes practice so much and make money for the school but are not getting paid. Since things are getting more expensive, college athletes should be paid.
...multi-billion dollar deals the NCAA has with television networks and how they benefit from commercial sales of their product. Finally, showed the benefits student athletes receive pertaining to top notch tutors and facilities. Even though the student athlete receives a more than the average student they should be entitled to a little more thanks in part for what they bring to the school. College student athletes need to start being paid immediately!
In college sports athletes perform on the big stage in front of thousands of people every week and receive no money for their performances. These athletes receive no money for their performance because it is made illegal by the NCAA for any student athlete to receive any type of reward for their performance. In the last five years there has been a heated debate on whether the NCCA should start paying college athletes. People responded to this situation with mixed views and opinions. The first reason that people have shown views against pay for play is because scholarships pay for college athlete’s school either fully or partially. Secondly people believe pay for play would create jealousy and hypocrisy on college campuses between administration, college students, and other civic workers. The first reason that people have been convinced about pay for play is overpaid college coaches who make millions for the little work they do. Next the NCCA, Colleges, and merchandisers profit millions off the athletes every week without any of that revenue given back to the athletes. Next people believe scholarships are ineffective or incomplete. Lastly people believe the corrupt system of the NCAA is a reason college athletes should be paid. The NCCA has proposed plans to enact a pay for play plan including adding a two thousand dollar stipend for student athletes but this has been on hold for now. In society for student athletes to succeed in college and college careers the NCCA must pay them.
The common belief of this side is that college athletes deserve to make money for creating a billion dollar business for the NCAA due to money making things like sponsorships, televised games, and merchandise. One man who believes athletes should be paid is writer Marc Edelman, who says that student-athletes should be paid because “the typical Division I college football player devotes 43.3 hours per week to his sport -- 3.3 more hours than the typical American work week” (Edelman). Edelman, and others with similar beliefs regarding the NCAA no pay policy think it’s absolutely ridiculous and unfair that college football players work longer than the average American worker and receive no pay. Even though student-athletes like American workers create money for their company, college players are still not paid. Another issue many people on this side have with the NCAA rule preventing athletes from getting paid is that many lawsuits and investigations have occured because of this one single rule.
