Everybody knows the horror of school lunch. The weird food combinations, the odd smells, finding things in your food that aren’t supposed to be there, it’s all a part of the school experience. However, the one component of school lunch that makes it bearable is having tablemates who you get to experience all of the horrors of what is school, including school lunch. One day they might be eating gross salad while bonding over how hard the math test was, and another day be eating some peculiar chicken nuggets while talking about what you’re going to do over the weekend. Despite all of this, there are serious problems with school lunch.
School lunch wasn’t always as under par as it is today. There was once a time when school lunch was freshly
For example, a picture of mac n’ cheese looks immaculate, but when you get the food, it looks like wallpaper paste on noodles. Whole health should be a primary factor in school lunch, the food being appetizing should be a main factor as well. When a student has a below par lunch it affects the rest of their day. In article “Dietary Needs” on Chartwells website chartwellsschools.com it states, “it is also about providing safe, tasty and nutritious meals…” While there may be the select few tasty meals at school, most of the meals are majorly under seasoned, look unpresentable, and lack any sort of planning. Another article from the Chartwells website says, “Supporting farm to school programs and local farmers is important to our teams.” If that is true, than why does the produce used at school always come in frozen, or looking like it fell off the back of the truck? What the readers of these articles may not know is that they prioritize healthy over anything else, but the food itself isn’t all that healthy either. If supporting farm to school programs is truly important they should focus on local farms, and having the produce look
While this may be tolerable for a while, but the intolerance will slowly continue to build until it becomes unbearable. School lunch not only affects the the atmosphere of school, it also dampens the overall mood of the students. It’s natural that students default reaction to school would be dismal, but the overall unappealingness of the food like substance lowers the students general attitude to an astonishingly low rate. If this pattern continues who knows what students will be like.
However, there are ways to take action and make school lunch better. For instance, Chartwells has a spot on there page where you can contact them by twitter, email, or by phone. This way you can voice your opinions about the atrocity that shcool lunch is to help make shattuck a better

Having different food can affect a child health. There are milky ways, cake, cookies, pizza and lets just add some French fries in there and call that lunch. Garland said, “Instead, we allow school cafeterias to dispense the same junk food that kids could buy in any mall” (621). There has been so much junk food and soft drinks in schools that makes the student health unsafe and a distraction to their education. Garland mentioned that the students are filling up with fat, salt and sugar rather than filling up with fruit, whole grains and vegetables. Schools should be about healthiness, and well balanced diets. With having Students eat healthy can boost up their energy and ability to learn. With that being said when I was in high school it was nothing but junk food for three years. When Michele Obama changed the law on the school lunches my senior lunches have changed. It was nothing but healthy food like whole grain, no sweets, two scoops of fruits and vegetables. At Odessa they had a school store loaded with junk food that would be sold out by forth period. When the law came to the school there was nothing but baked chip and replaced with other baked nutrition food or we had nothing at all. The drink machines were changed out
I don't think our school lunch is healthy because it has fat and too much sodium. Although it is good it is fattening it is the reason for much of the obesity in the U.S. Many kids have no other option to eat the unhealthy school lunches or they will be hungry.
The food is undesirable and tasteless it looks like it was thrown together. My parents can make better things blindfolded and armless. I’d rather my own meal at home then eat school lunch and it’s such a hassle to wait in line. Students can even go to a nice restaurant
But, if they do not like the food served, they won’t eat so they starve for the rest of the school day, which can lead to not focusing on class, feeling sick, and eating too much at dinner. The final reason our school should get a new lunch menu is because there are many problems with the food. For example, many students say the food is cold, fake, and disgusting. Students, Jordyn Gilbert and Leah Gelik, found mold on the lettuce in the salad.
“Our Schools need to start teaching kids how to be healthy.”- Unknown. School lunches have created a chronic problem in a school setting, and since it hasn't been fixed, 6-11 year olds have had a 17% increased chance of becoming obese (Centers for Disease control and Prevention). Most school districts don't even bother changing the food restrictions just so they can please their students. The shocking truth about our school lunches is that they are not health for young kids. The meat most schools use K.F.C and Campbell soup refuse to buy such meat. This shows that school lunch is not very health for kids if fast food won’t even use it. Schools are also
before the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010, school lunches tasted terrible to me and I
Do you remember your favorite “School Lunch”? I do, I essentially had two favorites; pizza and hamburgers with fries. Think back, wasn’t there at least one school lunch that the lunch ladies made that everyone was so excited to eat. Kids that habitually brought their super hero lunch box with thermos would leave it at home and be in line for pizza or burgers and fries. We could also go back for “seconds”, it was the best meal of the week including what was served at home. The federal government has been involved in the NSLP (National School Lunch Program) since 1946 with the implementation of the National School Lunch Act. These initial programs developed the commodity distribution program for schools, institutions, needy households, summer
The school lunch is sometimes raw and is a different color. For example, last year I got food for the first time and it was Chinese food. I got a bite of the chicken and there was this one spot with green on it, and that day forward I never got food there no more. But before that there was mac and cheese and I started eating it and my friend just says “ Don't
Unhealthy school lunches served in cafeterias across the nation are a major contributing factor to the development of childhood obesity. They are well known to be high in fat, sodium, and sugar, while also being outright unappetizing. It is currently estimated that about a third of kids and adolescents in the United States are overweight or obese. In addition, poor nutrition from school lunches can lead to chronic health problems over time and is also tied to poorer academic performance. While the US government updated the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs in early 2012, not all schools have implemented the changes and not all students are choosing to eat the healthier options
Others may say that healthy school lunches are good for everyone, but it could be argued that healthy school lunches is a bad idea. With plate waste increasing everyday, coming up with the funds to continue paying for the standard foods is becoming difficult (Bakst). Everyday I see plates of food being thrown
Whew! Who could ever imagine having fast food options as your school lunch? , many individuals do but also a quantity of them believe fast foods should not be permitted to early young students and teens to consume any fast foods during school lunch . Many health risks are taken which not so many kinds and young adults are aware about , but they’re not blamed for, what really is blamed for is all the advertisements many company’s make to get into people’s heads to consume their food. I believe fast food options for school lunch should never be valid to any student due to risks of many health issues.
Why is this a problem? Cafeteria food is often cheap, bought in bulk, high in calories, malnutritious, and microwaved. Student polls and opinions prove this. Therefore, this leads to a suggestion: Healthier, tastier foods and a better, more advanced lunch system should be implemented. First of all, students aren’t motivated to eat unhealthy, not-tasty food.
The increase rate in childhood obesity urged Michelle Obama to improve school lunches. In result of First Lady Michelle Obama addressing the issue, nutrition standards were raised in the Healthy Food Act of 2010. Sources show that this law caused a heated debate among parents. The question still stands, is the food actually healthy? the food system in the United States is making it very difficult for students to receive the nutrition they need to grow into healthy adults. The National School Lunch Program plays a huge role involving school lunches. I believe that the National School Lunch Program has influenced school lunches in a few positive ways. Their program is great for low income families and they also promote healthy eating and physical activity through changes in school environments. The National School Lunch Program is the reason behind schools serving breakfast, as well as the increased amount of fruits and vegetables. The National School Lunch Program, Michelle Obama, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, another contributor in school lunches, have been fighting to improve school lunches, but they are not doing so well when it comes to improving the food served on the
