In 1794 organized labor unions were formed to protect workers from poor working conditions and low wages. The Knights of Labor and the American Federation of Labor were formed in the late 1800’s. (Difference Between Knights of Labor and AFL). Both the Knights of Labor and The American Federation of Labor original goals were to improve working conditions for employees. Although the unions started out separately, during hard times and low membership they had to combine worker unions to regain their strength.
Thomas Jefferson said, “I find that the harder I work, the less I call it work”. I have often found myself in situations where I needed to fix something but could not because it is metal. I believe this might be why I began to show interest in welding. There is great satisfaction in being able to create or fix a metal object on your own. As a Certified Welder, I will be able to combine my hardworking drive with my personal interest in metal working to be a successful welder. This paper will explore the job description, requirements, and salary expectation for a Certified Welder.
American history between 1865 and 1900 is characterized as the Gilded Age. Mark Twain and Charles Dudley Warner coined this term; it means that this era, from the outside, appeared prosperous, but with a closer look, one could discover the corruption that lay beneath the thin layer of gold. This era was filled with urbanization, industrialization, and immigration; these three things gave the Gilded Age the appearance of being a prosperous time filled with progress. However, the American industrial worker, the bulwark of the age, did not prosper as much as one may have thought. American industrial workers faced extremely difficult lives, working very hard to receive little reward, and it did not take very long before they wanted reform. The industrial workers banded together, forming labor unions, in order to try to negotiate with their employers to have some of their demands met. Labor unions are generally thought of as having positive effects on workers, which certainly was true, but only to an extent. Labor unions also had some very negative effects on workers, specifically when their demands were not met, or when they were seen negatively by the government and the public. Immigration rates during the Gilded Age were extremely high, because the United States had great opportunities, especially in available jobs, which were greatly desirable to foreign people. Immigration generally had negative effects on American industrial workers. With large numbers of immigrants coming from foreign countries, there was a surplus of labor which caused unemployment and wages to remain low. Also, immigration had great effects on labor unions, generally negative as well, which would then in turn negatively affect the workers in that union. Last...
The mineworkers, the courier/food/newspaper delivery personnel and even the prisoners of whom hard labor is required are considered the oppressed. In the correctional centers the director has the authority to require that each able-bodied prisoner under commitment to the state department of corrections engage in hard labor for not less than forty hours per week. Besides that not more than twenty hours per week of participation in an educational, training or treatment program may be substituted for an equivalent number of hours of hard labor as prescribed by the director of the state department of correction. In this article, what I mean by "hard labor" means compulsory physical activity for the attainment of some object other than recreation or amusement. A tight labor market and a record number of inmates being released from prisons have a lot to do with the labor jobs. "They have to feed families and if they don't have jobs, they're going to end up back in the system...

How would you feel if your boss cut down your work paycheck just because he wanted a better life for them self? The men, women and children that worked in factories during the 18th and 19th centuries were brutally mistreated causing poverty, injuries and pallid body types (Thompson). At the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, working was incredibly unsafe because there were absolutely no labor or safety laws. Working conditions back then were extremely different from those that are in place today. The unbearable working conditions caused a vast amount of labor laws and rights.
The living wage is more and more being called a movement because the current federal minimum wage laws does not provide enough money for an individual that works a full time job to be able to support a family. Making them feel like they should not have to raise a family in poverty. Across the United States there are efforts to provide what is called living wages for workers which began with requiring all employers to pay at least the minimum wage to its workers that is equal to the living wage for the area (City/State) they are working in. The current minimum wage is set, depending on where you are living it can be up to several dollars short of what should be the living wage. The living wage movement is very active in full force forward
Blue collar and white collar jobs have equal value in every aspect imaginable. The amount of reading in blue collar jobs is either more or the same as white collar jobs; it can’t be said that one has a low literacy level because of their occupation. The pay in blue collar jobs can be level or just a small bit less than white collar jobs. The last reason is that hands on learning during the career can be just as effective and rewarding as in school educations.
Hard work is challenging work. But why does it have to be challenging work? Because challenging work, when intelligently chosen, pays off. It’s the work that people of lesser character will avoid. And if you infer that I’m saying people who avoid challenging work have a character flaw, you’re right… and a serious one at that. If you avoid challenging work, you avoid doing what it takes to succeed. To keep your muscles strong or your mind sharp, you need to challenge them. To do only what’s easy will lead to physical and mental flabbiness and very mediocre results, followed by a great deal of time and effort spent justifying why such flabbiness is OK, instead of stepping up and taking on some real challenges.
Welding is literally building a new world. The world would not be the way it is today if it was not for welding. As you look around, almost everything you see may have been welded. Welding has changed our world in numerous ways over the last hundred years, and continues to do so with the new advances and groundbreaking ways to weld.
As human beings, people instinctively envy others who have more success, wealth, intelligence, power, and relationships. Those people are seen working in white collar jobs more often than they blue collar jobs. For some reason people have gotten it into their heads that working in a white collar job is more respectable. No type of job is more or less important than another. Both the white and blue collar workers were and still are fundamentally important to society, and yet white collar men and women are lifted up and thought of as indispensable while their blue collar counterparts are mere afterthoughts.
In society, most people will work for many different reasons. Some will work based on the needs of money to survive, some require money to feed their love ones, and some just need money for their own leisure. In life, most people work just to stay busy, and even work until it’s time for them to retire. When applying for a job, the employer will ask for a résumé or a job application. When the information is given, it contains a work history which is a detailed report of all the jobs that a person has held, including company name, job title, and dates of employment. Companies typically required that applicants must provide their work history when applying for a job. A person’s work history is used by prospective employers to verify the information that a person has provided and to be contacted by pervious employers for background checks.
Imagine waking up one morning, no longer able to support your family—your household income has been reduced to a mere $2,000 per month. You can no longer afford to make payments on your house and it has gone into foreclosure. You can no longer afford to buy your children a new pair of shoes when their old pair has holes. Worst of all, you can no longer afford to pay for simple necessities for yourself or your family, and must resort to much more inferior goods just to get by.
What comes to mind when hearing the words child labor? Is it simply of children doing work in a 1920’s factory? Is it an image of Malaysian children in a sweatshop making sneakers for less than a quarter a day? When many people think of child labor, they always connect it with negative meanings. Child labor has become a global issue; many of the countries whom employ child workers are developing ones. According to the International Labor Organization, the number of child laborers has decreased from a stifling 246 million, to 168 million. It’s also well known that child labor was a major part of the United States, and many other industrial countries in the late 1800’s and for the US, mainly in the early 1900’s. While child labor is constantly viewed in the negative, many do not take a look at the possible benefits of having children work at an earlier age. Trying to refrain from looking more into the hazardous conditions that many children have to work with, looking at the idea of having children work at an earlier age and the benefits it brings in terms of developing a better work ethic, and aiding children into stepping into the adult world.
