Only 1 in 3 Americans are truly happy, and as of March 2017, The world happiness record has put America at number 14. The guiding principle of happiness is to take care of yourself along with the others around you and then Happiness will find its way to you. However, Critics believe the greatest weakness of happiness is the avoidance of sadness. Although I try to remain optimistic I still experience regularly both happiness and sadness. The argument for and against Happiness is that there are ways to make it a possible thing to achieve and once you get it, it makes you feel good inside. Happiness is a great thing to have and there are ways to accomplish the goal. I agree with Sunstein's argument that "Experiences can have a much bigger impact on people's happiness than things." Experiences can alter one’s whole view of life while things can only temporarily change one’s life. For instance, the things that make childhood memories so distinct are the experiences you've encountered, materialistic things can easily be forgotten because with each experience comes a specific emotion attached. There are things to do to ensure true happiness and sometimes these things can be done financially. Sometimes in taking care of yourself, it means focusing on sentimental moments rather than wasting time on a constant search for a money-saving deal. "Too often we spend our time looking for ways to save money...We would do better to spend our money to find ways to save time"(Sunstein). Some of the greatest life experiences money can't even buy, people would be better off making family and friends a priority. With that being said, it's proven that giving to others will make you happier. Giving makes you happy, and when you’re happy you give more, which makes you happier, which makes you give more, this creates a 'circle' of giving.
