Everyone chases after happiness. Everyone’s goal of life is being happy. Each of them chooses a variety of measures, such as earning money, to be happy. However, there are many people that are not happy. People always endeavor after happiness, but they never reach it. For what reason are they not able to fulfill their standards of happiness? What effort should they put into their lives to meet them? This essay will explain why people fail to be happy and what people are supposed to do in order to gain happiness. The root reason why people are not happy is that they confuse between happiness and the measures to gain it. Namely, many people mistake measure to be happy for the happiness and pursue the former. The little prince says, "Adults always wander around because they don’t know where they want to go. Only the children know what they are looking for, so only the children have the chance. ” (Saint-Exupéry 315) Measures cannot seduce the children, so children know exactly what makes them happy, so they have the chance to be happy. However, as they grow up, they begin to confuse between the dream and the measure to realize it, so they lose the chance. Hence, to have the chance for happiness, people should realize what they really want and pursue it. They should not be blind to the true desire, the true happiness that is inherent. As the former paragraph explained, people must exactly know where they want to arrive at in order to earn happiness. Happiness is the positive emotion and contentment one feels naturally. Many Psychology studies have been concluded to display what pure happiness is. In the article, “In Pursuit of Unhappiness” by Darrin M. McMahon, he indicates that happiness cannot be forced. In the article, McMahon mentions a philosopher, John Stuart Mill, who acknowledges as well, that happiness can not be forced. He says that if one focuses on something other than their own happiness, happiness will come to them naturally. By what Mill says, people should be encouraged that happiness will come to them and can not force happiness to them. Another example is Jeffrey Kluger’s article, “The Happiness of Pursuit”, he talks about how people focus on never being happy. He says,

The book definition of happiness is a state of well-being characterized by emotions ranging from contentment to intense joy. The true meaning of happiness varies from person to person. Everyone has a different definition of what happiness means to them and what can make one person happy, can make another person unhappy. For the citizens of Utopia, those of Bensalem, and those of Brave New World, they all claim to be very happy living in their own “utopias”. However, the real question is are they really happy with the way they are living or are they pretending to be happy because that is what they were taught to believe happiness really is. In this essay, I will be writing about the citizens of Utopia, Bensalem, and Brave New World and explaining which of these citizens I believe are the happiest and why.

Happiness can be hard to come by these days. It appears to be a rare luxury that only few people get to experience. Perhaps, part of the reason that happiness seems so elusive is that the world has come to think that every negative emotion and gloomy feeling is bad and that it should be suppressed rather than let out. It is almost like we are looking at sadness and anger and other negative emotions as some sort of disease, as it is not normal for people to feel anything other than happiness and joy.
As the sun set, over the horizon, a couple sat at the beach shore. The boy leaned over and embraced his mate, and whispered to her, “I love you”. Those three words, which would bring emotional sparks to a person. These three words have great meaning behind them and they bring so much happiness to a person. Today, everyone strives to find happiness. However, there are only a few who realized what true happiness is. Others look for happiness where there is wealth, they would spend half of their life trying to acquire it. But wealth cannot give the emotional needs and spiritual fulfillment needed in order to be happy. In today’s everyday life, people look for pleasure in drugs, alcohol and their sexual life, in order to fulfill the void of happiness. Instead of facing what true happiness is, they take pride and run away from it. One cannot differ pleasure from happiness, which is why people often get them confused. The Ancients gave us dozens of recipes on how to conduct a happy life, each of them contradicting the other, or at least, with very dissimilar opinions. The Modernity has its own solutions up to the negation of the very possibility of having a happy life.
But in this debate, one question still raises its head - What is happiness? Happiness is not actually leading a luxurious life, but the luxury of living a life. Happiness is not actually about expanding your business, but it lies in expanding the horizons of life. Happiness is not having a meal in the most famous restaurant, but having it with your most beloved family. It does not lie in attending honorable parties, but to attend a party with honor.
The pursuit of happiness ultimately leads to disappointment and a lack of satisfaction because people’s cravings can never be entirely fulfilled. Dalai Lama once said “When you are discontent, you always want more, more, more. Your desire can never be satisfied. But when you practice contentment, you can say to yourself, ‘Oh yes – I already have everything that I really need.’” This quote shows that having high expectations of anything leads to disappointment when the expectation is not met. Happiness is a feeling that humans naturally desire. Without it, one feels incomplete. In this generation, happiness has taken on a definition by how we are presented to one another. It is measured by how much money we have, how famous we are, or the things we possess. When in reality, none of these things guarantee a happy life. Happiness is something that cannot be bought with money, but rather, it must be found, earned, sought after. Each and every one of us has our own list of things that we consider to make us happy. However, happiness shines brightest through the relationships we create, and the goals we make for ourselves to strive after. Along with these two essential sources, we then can mix and match those things in life that we enjoy to create our own unique formula for happiness.
Throughout my life, I have learned to see that happiness is not such an inaccessible dream. Although its notion varies from one person to another, happiness is often times only one inch away. Some people will experience happiness in the pursuit of it. Some will find it in sacrificing themselves for greater goals. Others will find it in people’s company, in lust or in drugs. There is no recipe for success or happiness, and it is only up to us to define what we want from life, and how we want to get it. The only certain thing is that it is never too late for anybody to achieve their dreams, to make peace with their feelings, and ultimately, to be happy.

Whether in wealth, generosity, self-indulgence, or religion, we all walk different paths towards the same destination. We all arrive at that destination at different times as well. It's a longer and more difficult journey for some than it is for others.
