Sports have been in this world since the beggining of time. The first sport created was Olympics in 760 B.C. Sports have continued to grow through time. Coleman also proved that drop out rates and test scores increased with sports. Ripley stated that coaches who are teachers are not focused on academics. On the other hand, there was a study done at the University of Arkansas that disproved coaches being bad teachers; they also gain more opportunities for communicating and being a mentor (Bowen 3). Sports can help many at- risk youths. In order to participate in sports you need to be committed and willing to work hard. You also have to learn to respect others and accept that winning isn’t the only measure of success. Losing can build character as well. When youth participate in a sports they enjoy, they are less likely to engage in behaviors that are harmful or dangerous to themselves and others.
