The magazine article, “Be A Good Sport” by Lori Calabrese shows the history of sports along with the benefits and drawbacks that come with them. Calabrese explains that, “Sports may have begun as a form of survival.” because of the evidence that has been found from Egyptian tombs and wall paintings; the paintings showed wrestling and acrobatics in ways that helped their daily lives. Once the 19th century came around, the sports we know of today first began; many sports came about at the same time and spread rapidly all over the world. Although sports have evolved drastically since then, children and adults still get hurt while participating in these activities that sometimes cause serious harm. Despites knowledge of these bad occurrences, people

She and her sister had to flee their country because of terrorists and war. There where not many countries that would allow refugees into their country. So they had to hire a smuggler to get them to germany. While they rode on a boat to greece The motor stopped working so yusra and her sister had to jump in the water and push the boat for three hours. After they got to Greece they had to walk for 25 days to get to germany. Finally they got there and they were very luckie to find a refugee camp. In Introduction to the Philosophy of Sport, Heather L. Reid presents a discussion of how ethics is treated in the arena of Olympism and some of the struggles of defining and how or if the ethical guidelines should be enforced. Reid notes, “Some would say that ethical principles are always the product of a particular culture, so there can no more be universal ethical principles than there can be a universal culture” (Reid, 22). I disagree with the notion that there cannot be universal ethical principles for athletes to follow in sport because even across cultures there are general morals that shape the lives of people from all over the world. For example, murder and cheating are inherently immoral actions, no matter where someone comes from;
The influence of sports activities on boys’ identity and socialization experience remains a major interest in gender studies today. Michael A. Messner wrote an article called Boyhood, Organized Sports, and the Construction of Masculinities. The article examines the way sports focus and define what it is to be a masculine, studies variation in sports’ influences across social classes, and depicts lessons sports participation impacts for relationships beyond sports. Each area Michael A. Messner examined directly relates to three key concepts of psychology theories. The concepts consist of observational learning (social learning), conformity, and social identity. The research methods in the article are also a major factor contributing to the
A topic that has recently come into great interest in the media is whether or not children and teens should play competitive sports. Some may say that they should because sports can teach valuable life lessons. Others believe the chance of injury is too great. While some children can sustain injuries from sports, studies have shown that children are more likely to injure themselves biking than playing football or any other sport. “Sports do not build character.
In “Children Need to Play, Not Compete”, Jessica Statsky tries to bring forth a pressing issue of competitive sports and its destructive effects. These sports are designed keeping in mind the age and physical strength of adults which make these sports unsuitable for the young ones. They have a destructive effect on a child’s physical and mental health. Jessica talks about how the competitive sports becomes a hindrance in the development of growing bodies of children. She further elaborates by mentioning the injuries faced during this time period can last a lifetime. On addition to the physical stress, the competitive sports causes a lot of physiological issues as well. The amount of mental pressure and extreme physical requirement makes these
Sports are a popular pastime among all ages and types of people. People not only participate in them for fun, but also for money, physical fitness, rush of competition, and for many other personal reasons. Playing sports is especially common among young people in schools. Athletics are great and enjoyable for many reasons, but there can be a point where sports participation can go too far and become negative for children and adults. Sports specialization for young people is an increasing trend that results in sports having a negative impact on individuals and society.
One of the assumptions Statsky makes is that, “One readily understandable danger of overly competitive sports is that they entice children into physical actions that are bad for growing bodies” (627). This statement rests on the assumption that children would not perform any “physical actions that are bad for growing bodies” (Statsky 627) without organized competitive sports. This is simply untrue. Children jump from swings, climb trees, skateboard, “pop wheelies” and otherwise put themselves in physical peril with alarming regularity. Children’s free and unorganized play often results in broken bones and stitches, even for the most timid children.
There are many sports out there in the world that people as I, love and have passion for. Many don’t like getting hurt while participating in a physical sport neither does me but if you love it nothing else will matter. Yes, they will lead you to pain and even broken bones but that also won’t stop you from getting up. I know one thing, playing a sport will make you strong from the inside and the outside, such as soccer does for me.
Youth sports can cause multiple problems for young athletes, but the solutions are simple. I have never played sports but I have many classmates who have, I can’t talk from experience but I can talk from hearing their painful stories. One of my friends had to stop playing sports because if she got hurt one more time it would be really really hard to even walk again. According to Scope magazine articles, “Playing with Pain” and “Travel Team Heartbreak” youth sports have become less fun and more dangerous. In “Playing with Pain” (12-15) Michelle Crouch reports that “Playing through pain is considered heroic, and winning is everything.” (14) She says that most teens live by that saying. They ignore the pain and it gets worse. The solution is
Sports can help many at- risk youths. In order to participate in sports you need to be committed and willing to work hard. You also have to learn to respect others and accept that winning isn’t the only measure of success. Losing can build character as well. When youth participate in a sports they enjoy, they are less likely to engage in behaviors that are harmful or dangerous to themselves and others. It is for these reasons schools should strive to maintain athletic programs for their students.
The sport industry is one of the largest and most successful industries, both in terms of popularity and the amount of money that circulates within it each year. For as long as humans have been around, sports has been around in one way or another. The development of sports, from brutal and vicious games such as gladiators in Rome to more civilised and controlled sports that we are used to watching or participating in today. Sports was originally used in military training by men who used sports to get fit and strong so they can protect their families and land or take over other people’s land and so it was a way of showing power and leadership.
Many athletes in retirement have suffered from life changing injuries. “Nine out of 10 athletes say they have been injured playing a sport, and 54 percent say they have played with an injury such as a sprain or even a broken bone” (“Changing the Culture of Youth Sports”). This is what happens to almost every athlete across the world if they play a contact sport.People can change this for the better of both sides, entertainment and human health, if they educate people, change their mindset or attitude, and use more money.
“Sports are for fun, but they also offer benefits and lessons that carry over into all aspects of life”. This well-known anonymous quotation conveys the message that sport is the game which has some rules and customs. It is not only for fun and entertainment, but there are also some benefits of playing sports which give some important lessons for life. Every kind of physical sport is healthy because it involves running, jumping, stretching, mind skills and much more. There are so many sports available in the world nowadays, but we can categorize them by the numbers of players, the three main categories are individual sport, dual sport and team sport.
Sport, according to the oxford dictionary, can be defined as an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment. Sport may seem like just another, simple five letter word yet it has the power and aptitude to teach humanity such fundamental and intellectual life lessons. In my speech I will explore these vital lessons, such as failure, success, perseverance, teamwork, tolerance, responsibility and discipline by exhibiting how each lesson can be learnt and utilised.
Sports, a very popular past time today, have been around since ancient times. Greek Olympic Games featured events from chariot races, javelin throws, to wrestling. In addition, a game similar to soccer was played in China by the second century BC. In England, a violent rugby type game was even played to settle feuds between villages. With the development of the industrial revolution and the creation of the first public schools, sports decreased in violence and were played more recreationally and constructively. Basketball was invented to help the youth in New England spend their energy in the winter months. Since the early 1900’s sports have been a key experience in the United States (“History of Sports”). I have played sports for many years, and the experience has helped me grow significantly as an individual.
