Rabbits need for Fiber

Every rabbit is different, there for each has different requirements that must be met in order to be healthy. A rabbit’s diet is very important and plays a major role in its life span, along with diseases that can come from over eating. When feeding a rabbit, one of the important nutrients to include in a diet is fiber, it can affect a ribbit if fed too much, and also affect them if it’s fed too little. Owners should gain the knowledge of how to properly feed good proportioned meals to benefit their pet.

Fiber is very important, plays a huge role in digestion and is the majority of a rabbits feed. I have two rabbits at the moment who are both healthy; they eat similar feed, but different amounts due to their gender and their ages. My buck that is almost 2 years old eats about a hand full of timothy hay per day along with a handful of his favorite pellets. What I have noticed is that fiber intake along with water intake play a huge role in how much they consume and how frequently. Without water, they will not eat much during that time period, without hay, they will not eat as much pellets. Low levels of fiber decreases gut mortality which can lead to digestive upset. (Notes) When feeding a rabbit low fiber and high pellets, it can lead to obesity which has serious diseases that can result from it. Even though some rabbits, like my own for example, love the pelleted feed with the seeds and dried other treats, this does not mean it is completely good for the rabbit due to it being high in CHO/sugar or starches.
