Eating Meat, It Doesn’t Have To Be Black And White. Every person has the ability to make their own choice of whether to eat meat or not. However, eating meat is directly tied to negative health effects, pollution leading to a depletion of ozone, and the depletion of hundreds of thousands of acres of land “wasted” on animal production when they could be used to solve the hunger crisis or lower emission levels. What humans eat is no longer a matter of choice; it has become a matter of life and death. Literally, the future of the whole planet rests on the decision of whether or not to eat meat. “Currently 80% of the world’s agricultural land is used directly or indirectly for animal production. In the US over half the total land mass is used for the production of meat and dairy products” (Clarke). It is ridiculous to imagine that 80% of all of the world’s agricultural land is being used for animal production. These resources could be used to feel millions of hungry/malnourished families (Duden). A farmer can raise 250 pounds (113.4 kilograms) of beef on 1 acre (4046.9 square meters) of land. That same amount of land could produce 50,000 pounds (22,680 kilograms) of tomatoes. Or, it could produce 40,000 pounds (18,144 kilograms) of potatoes or 30,000 pounds (13,608 kilograms) of carrots (Duden). When these agricultural resources are given to the animals involved in meat production, these resources are lost. Besides the loss of land, the process of animal production is contributing to pollution and other greenhouse gases that are doing irreplaceable damage to the environment and contribute to untold negative health
