The term leadership may be defined as the “process whereby an individual influences others to achieve a common goal” (Kreitner, & Kinicki, 2010, p. g4). Leadership is a complex mixture of a person’s qualities. It cuts across nearly every modern discipline. Numerous theories have been formulated by management theorists in order to support the benefits of the various management styles. The first one is the Theory Y versus Theory X. the second theory is the Total Quality Management. Another theory that has been formulated to support the advantages of the different management theories is the Theory Z. This essay will focus on how I may possibly use theory Y to become a better leader as a tax professional with an Organization Management degree.
Theory Y was formulated by Douglas McGregor. The Theory assumes that “work is a natural activity, like play or rest” (Kreitner, & Kinicki, 2010, p. 9). The theory further assumes that “people are capable of self-direction and self-control if they are committed to objectives” (Kreitner, & Kinicki, 2010, p.9). According to this theory, employees shall be dedicated to their goals only if incentives are availed to them. These incentives and/ or rewards ought to address higher needs. A perfect example of a higher need is self-fulfillment. This state of affairs makes people to search for responsibility. The theory further adds that scores of persons might handle a particular task and/ or responsibility since innovation and resourcefulness are ordinary within the masses (Ouchi, 1991, p.37).

The topic of leadership has been explored and written about by thousands of authors who are considerably more qualified than I am to write about the subject. However, I’ve always maintained that developing, evolving and articulating one’s own leadership philosophy is an essential part of a professional’s growth. Leadership at times can be a complex topic to delve into and may appear to be a simple and graspable concept for a certain few. Leadership skills are not simply acquired through position, seniority, pay scale, or the amount of titles an individual holds but is a characteristic acquired or is an innate trait for the fortunate few who possess it. Leadership can be misconstrued with management; a manager “manages” the daily operations of a company’s work while a leader envisions, influences, and empowers the individuals around them.
My impression of leadership is the ability to motivate, inspire, set a visualization, connect, and lead by example. To become a successful leader you have to be able to convince your followers that you are trustworthy of being followed. During this semester, we have learned many, if not all of the major leadership theories and how they play a role in our everyday lives. But personally, a few of these leadership models caught me and intrigued me the whole semester so much that this paper is going to predominately be referenced about them. For example, the proposed framework that organizes leadership theories based on each theory 's focus and approach. Focus is referred to as whether or not leadership is viewed as a set of traits or actions.

“On leadership” was written by John W. Gardner (The Free Press, New York, 1990). He used seventeen chapters to explain and describe essential components for the leadership should be in a successful organization. This book not only has significant influence now, but also for the future. Below are my understanding about this book, which was divided into two parts. For the first part, I will pick up some perspectives which influence me most from this book. For the second part, which is my comments and critique about this book.

Leaders are considered as an important part to any successful organization because the leader is not just being a successful leader but also to bring achievement to the organization and its employees. “Leadership is the ability to influence a group toward the achievement of goals.” (Robins, page 221). Leaders insist employees on entering training courses to improve the productivity, and to expand their knowledge.
According to McGregor’s Theory Y, it can be best described as employees who have a willingness and desire to take responsibility to work, and are committed to accomplishing their goals pressure free of performing their job duties in order to complete their work production. Theory Y is considered to be positive as labeled by McGregor. (Robbins, 2013)
Leaders: Strategies for Taking Charge is an organizational management book written by Warren Bennis and Burt Nanus for those who aim to become better leaders. The authors emphasize that having executive positions or being a manager does not automatically make one a leader. A leader is one who inspires his staff, help them find purpose in their work, and effectively implement their plans. They separate the book not quite into chapters on different topics, but rather by four strategies that they have determined are vital for any leader to take on. The strategies are effectively concluded as attention through vision, meaning through communication, trust through positioning, and the deployment of self. Although there are many outstanding, albeit necessary qualities of a good leader, it is the leader’s beliefs in which greatness is given its first breath, fostered by action, and spread throughout the institution. A great leader believes in encouraging, not destroying; in setting the precedence instead of yielding to prominence ; in collaboration, not division; in giving, not taking; and in having high standards and volunteering to be the first of many to be held to them. A great leader does not take advantage of the people being lead, but instead, creates an advantage for the people by giving them the opportunities to lead. Only when people take ownership of an institution will passion be cultivated, action be taken, and greatness be achieved.
In today’s business world , there are several approaches and theories of leadership. This includes leadership approaches based upon a wide range of topics including traits, behavioral, situational, transformational, and other perspectives. Each of these approaches have their own set of advantages and disadvantages, making them best suited for different situations. The leadership theory that has the greatest appeal to me is the transformational leadership theory as it focuses on the greater good of the organization and its followers.

Leadership, without doubt, is a significantly important function of management. It helps to aggrandize efficiency and to fulfil an organization’s goals. Leadership is the ability of a manager to induce the subordinates to work with confidence, determination, courage and zeal. It is also defined as ability to influence a group towards the realization of a goal. Leaders should have the capability of developing future visions, and to drive the organizational members to want to attain the visions. This paper states my points in which I duly believe, justifies the importance of an outstanding leader in any organization.
