Ever since I was a little kid I loved the performing arts and I never thought that I would eventually fall in love with science . After an intense and challenging year of Chemistry my sophomore year, I was hesitant and nervous in signing up for my junior year science class. Toward the end of my sophomore year my chemistry teacher, Mr. Bowditch, told me he thought I would do well in Advanced Placement Environmental Science. I was in a state of disbelief because I was struggling trying to get a C in Chemistry and I was thinking how was I supposed to take AP Environmental Science class. After a conversation with my parents, they had persuaded me to sign up and we agreed if i didn't like it or it was too hard I would be able to drop the class.
In the Rio Grande Valley littering is a big issue when it comes to animals and their habitats. Many individuals tend to throw trash on the streets and oceans when they go to beaches, for example South Padre Island. When people go on vacations, they always leave their trash on the sandy beaches and do not pick it up. This kind of action result in a bird confusing the plastic garbage for food and consuming it. Garbage is very dangerous for animals it can injure them and damage their digestive system which can sometimes result in death.

I switched to INVS from traditional school two years ago because I missed a lot of school due to migraines and when that happened teachers started getting aggravated and letting me know through my work what they thought. They’d count my work late when I turned it in the day after I got back and dock my points even when school policy states they cant. Even though I live in Indiana, I've always loved the ocean and everything in it. I have always known I wanted to do something in the marine biology field it has changed over the years though, as every kid does. My lifetime goal is helping others and I plan to use my career to fulfill it. The classes I’m taking right now and the ones I’m planning to take senior year are classes I believe will influence my decision in my college major/career as well as counting toward my GPA. This will help me get into schools who have medical programs that I’m considering. Also, taking AP classes can help me save money since I can earn college credit. I’m taking all AP classes, and the electives I’m taking have been classes that have helped me consider being in the medical field. I’ve found that over the years, science and math are what I’m doing better in versus history and english. I believe by being in the medical field, I can help others in the best way I can.

Not only does this course make you an informed citizen but it also allows you to appreciate different world viewpoints, become an educated voter, and realize the fragility and resilience of our planet. This course also provides interests for students of many different educational inclinations.
The issue of our watersheds is that there is too much waste such as plastics polluting the water which affects our watersheds. A solution to this problem is to implement more recycling bins and put out more awareness signs beginning at our school. The amount of water that is potable and useful to humans as well as animals, is only 2.5%. If we do not do anything about our watershed, the amount of useful water would only decrease.
High School has helped me to refine this passion to the field of biological sciences with my particular interest being molecular genetics. My peers called my "crazy" for undertaking all three science subjects in my HSC course, but for me there really was no other choice. I have excelled in biology with a trial exam mark of 97%. Within the component of advanced molecular genetics of this course my mark of 100% reflects the love and passion I feel towards this subject, and I am extremely proud to be ranked number one in a very competitive class of sixteen. Upon entering high school I expected it to be just as my middle school classes. This proved to be untrue, as I had very difficult and detail-oriented tests, along with much more demanding classwork and homework. Throughout my first semester I struggled to get everything done, such as studying, homework, club meetings, and dance classes. I knew transferring out of the STEM program would provide me with a less strenuous workload; however, I decided to persevere and strive to retain the grade point average I obtained in middle school. Although my grades were not what I was familiar with, the lessons and hardships I experienced during this time will last me a lifetime. I am thankful to have had this experience and learned how to better manage my time, while still being able to maintain my extracurricular activities. In the beginning of the semester, I thought it would be enjoyable to take Anatomy and Physiology since I had already taken it in high school and actually received a high grade. I had heard from many students that this class is much harder in college and will often have a big lecture setting with more than three-hundred students, but I brushed this off and went into the classroom with a positive attitude. I quickly learned that big lectures were not the classes that I would succeed in, instead I preferred a small classroom setting where I am able to ask questions whenever needed. Although it was difficult to maintain good grades, practice 10 hours a week for the swim team, and working a part-time job, I enjoyed the push and the outcome I received at the end. Due to wanting to be in the Medical field, I took Honors Anatomy and Physiology in order to learn more about the human body; prepare myself for the memorization and the use of note cards. All the information felt like my head was bottled up, I wanted to enjoy my high school years, because “they pass by so fast, make the best of them” my brother would constantly say to me but failed to mention if I really wanted to do what I loved, I had to let all that go and focus on school; which became my biggest responsibility. There were times where I just wanted to take the easy way out and drop the class, but I knew no good would come from that; instead I balanced out my schedule by prioritizing my time between school, practice and work.

I have learned so much during my time in the Key Global Environmental Sustainability class. I realized that service and sustainability are much larger than I originally thought. Sustainability can also manifest in so many different forms. Participating in service projects this semester was so rewarding and informative. I was exposed to some things that I would never have been otherwise, and I feel better prepared for volunteering and more in the future as a result of the things that I was to do during my time here.
In my “real” world, this isn’t the case, but I still have big dreams of what I want to do in my classroom in regards to environmental education. Here are some of my current approaches to using environmental education in my formal, middle school (7th grade) life science class:
