Introduction
Roman Architecture before being influenced by its conquered territories was far from grandeur. The architecture and art were a legacy of their predecessors and conquered such as the Greeks, Egyptians, Babylonians, and Etruscans. Before the booming of Roman Arches, Arch was already used in the mentioned civilizations but it was the Romans who developed the idea and made it possible to use it to support much larger buildings.

The Romans also changed the use of arch through their innovations. The ancient arches were a set of corbeled stones or bricks which didn’t have power to support heavy structures above the arch. The Romans then invented true arch by using wooden cast to support the shape while they lay the wedge-shaped stones or bricks (called voussoirs) at specific angle with a key stone in the middle, the stones/voussirs on the left and right side then will push their weight into the key stone creating a solid form which then strengthened by their use of concrete as the cohesive bonds between the stones. Throughout the ages, many scholars and future-scholars have offered an explanation for the meaning of structures from the ancient years, either by their placement or construction. None has fascinated or pushed scholars for reasons than structures and art of the ancient Romans, more specifically those constructed in the years of the Pax Romana and Crisis and Decline of the Roman Empire (27 BC to 284 AD).
From the Egyptians to Romans, architecture achievements of the ancient world have left a huge impression on todays modern world. They all have left a tremendous impression on modern civilizations. There are numerous architectural monuments to write about. In this essay I will be discussing about the Pantheon and Colosseum, the famous architectural buildings of the Roman Civilization. I will discuss the history, significance, and analyze the qualities of the architecture.

Three of the impacts can be small things to things we take for granted, like building safety, or building limits, or the laws we follow everyday, or lastly water systems, to blueprints and public squares.
The Romans discovered many things that would aid the construction of their great civilization. The Romans discovered that a particular mixture of volcanic rock rubble and water could be used to create very strong structures; their concrete mixture could even be used in underwater applications. The Romans used concrete to make foundations for large buildings as well as bridges. They also used concrete as mortar to hold together the stones that made up roads, walls, and bridges. The Romans discovery of concrete allowed them to build very large structures that have survived many centuries.
Today the Roman arch is one of the most innovative tools that we have borrowed and perfected from the Romans. “During construction, arches are often supported by a wooden frame. When the frame is removed, both sides of the arch press against the keystone and thereby support the arch.” The Greeks and Romans started using aqueducts, which is where we got the idea of pipelines to distribute water. Aqueducts were constructed by building large bridge like structure that sloped slightly towards the destination it was going to. If the ancient Roman innovation of concrete, were to not have been significant, it would not have continued to be used across the globe. In fact, ancient Roman hydraulic cement-based concrete was so notable that modern day scientists are trying to, “replicate the exact formula for which ancient Roman concrete was made.” This is due to ancient Roman concrete being so sturdy and strong that aspects of it have lasted over 2000 years without deterioration. Without the innovation of Roman concrete, many of the modern world’s infrastructure would not be stable, causing havoc across the globe. Also, advancements in construction, health, and even safety areas would not be possible, as almost every piece of infrastructure, from sewerage and water pipes, to building and security walls, would not be able to remain as safe to use. This is because the modern world relies so heavily on concrete, with around five billion tonnes of concrete being used around the world each year,becoming the single most widely used material in the construction industry. In fact, around 76% of all first-world infrastructure is reinforced with concrete. Without this substance, much of the modern-world's infrastructure would not be as tall or sturdy as what it currently is, as it would simply deteriorate or break. There are certain traits the Roman Empire possessed which contributed greatly to the growth of Christianity. The Roman Empire, most importantly, united a great variety and cultures and people into what became one nation; the resulting unity and communication between so many peoples eased the spread of Christianity all over the world. Of the Roman emperors, even the extremely rude ones assisted in spreading the Christian faith; not despite, but relieved by their pursuit Christianity grew rapidly. Finally, the oppressed and broken nature of the plebeians made them very liable to and eager of the Christian message.
When we take a look at why civilizations rise when others fall, the ancient civilization of the Roman Empire stands out as notable, if not particular. Ancient Rome remains one of the most prestigious empires in history due to its geography, specifically how the country of Italy was protected from invaders, the benefit of the Italian land, the civilization being at the center of trade and the diversity of the empire’s population. That being said, the ancient civilization of the Romans was able to succeed as long as it did due to the empire’s geographical advantage of being in the heart of Italy.
Lord Byron once stated, “While stands the Colosseum, Rome shall stand;/ When falls the Colosseum, Rome shall fall;/ And when Rome falls- the World.” The Colosseum not only depicted the incredible architectural skill of the Romans, but also their superiority to others across the globe. Influencing most of the culture and traditions that has been integrated into our modern society, the Roman Empire is a stimulating model of how a single cultural group could shift the architectural world forever. Although inspired by the Greeks, the Roman style is entirely independent and distinct from all others; the Colosseum is only one of many of their historical masterpieces.

To that end, the Romans perfected three architectural elements: concrete, the arch, and the vault. These three elements helped lighten the load carried by Roman structures while maintaining overall durability.
The arch today is considered the structural form that is proven to be effective. To keep the structure of the arch in place seemed to be a difficult task for architects to master. As the increase of the amount of pressure occurs, this causes the arches to become compressed. When tension is applied however, forces the arch from the bottom to spread outward, while the superior of the arch caves inward and collapsing eventually. During the middle ages, architects realized that blocks were too difficult to use for creating beams so they decided that it was time for a new source as a building block for construction.

I will add that the world could benefit from turning back the clock and learning the ways of the Romans when it pertains to the materials used to make concrete, according to an analysis done by UC Berkley of the Roman concrete, the materials and the process of making Roman concrete is much more sustainable and environmental friendly.
