Without our past we are nothing. The Greek and Roman civilization were marvelous civilizations of the AD times. If you look around today you can see advancements we made off of concepts we borrowed from the Ancient Greeks and Romans. Today, we owe much of our understanding to them; they were very knowledgeable of many things. The Greeks and Romans although they were very old civilizations have managed to impact our daily lives in the some of the most fantastic ways possible. Today we owe one of the largest global social gatherings to the Greeks, the Olympic games. The Olympic games were held every four years in Olympia, Greece. Today “the Olympic games are held every four years, with the summer and the Winter Games alternating by occurring every four years but two years apart.” Just like the Ancient Olympic games, today’s Olympics are designed to be a time of peace in which all nations can come together to compete in different sports. In the past the Olympic games were used as a way for the Greeks to honor their gods. Today the games are not an honoring but more of a social gathering. What’s great about the games today is that everyone has equal opportunity to compete. No matter your gender, size, ethnicity, or wealth, all you have to do is work hard and …show more content…
prove that you have the skill level to compete. Another thing we have learned from the Greeks and Romans is architecture. Today if you look around at different buildings you can see the impact of those ancient empires. “Citizens of regions conquered by Rome were the beneficiaries of Roman innovations such as a (public) fresh water supply, bridges of previously impassable rivers, roads linking all parts of the empire (especially to the capital) and incredible public buildings like the forums and baths.” Today you can see the impact of Greek and Roman architecture in many of our capital buildings. The Greeks and Romans are very well known for their magnificent columns and arches.
Today the Roman arch is one of the most innovative tools that we have borrowed and perfected from the Romans. “During construction, arches are often supported by a wooden frame. When the frame is removed, both sides of the arch press against the keystone and thereby support the arch.” The Greeks and Romans started using aqueducts, which is where we got the idea of pipelines to distribute water. Aqueducts were constructed by building large bridge like structure that sloped slightly towards the destination it was going to. We borrowed that idea and now use pipes that are pressurized and push the water towards where it is
needed. So in conclusion, the Greeks and Roman were magnificent civilizations that have greatly impacted our daily lives. They created aqueducts, the Roman arch, the Olympic games, and many more wonderful things. But overall they set the foundations for ideas we would later take and make our own.
It is always important to look to the past in order to move towards the future. This was done in the formation of Western Society, and more specifically the formation of American society. The Greek culture served as a frame of reference for many aspects of Western life including government, architecture, math and the arts. Ancient Greek culture served as a very broad base for our society to be built upon.
People consider the Greek and Roman empires as two of the most successful civilizations in history because of their various accomplishments. For Greece, their political, economic, and militaristic attributes were not only successful by themselves, but they also successfully affected future civilizations significantly. Similarly, in the case of the Roman Empire, there was a lot of success in the military, politics, and in economics. The assumption that the Greek and Roman empires were two of the most successful in history is accurate because of their various economic, political, and militaristic accomplishments during their most successful times.
When we think of an Olympic athlete it is one who has proven himself not only to be a champion in his own country, but one of world-class skill. This idea contrasts with the Ancient Olympic athlete who could only be a free man that spoke Greek. Furthermore, there were fewer events in the games of old. There wasn't any water polo, ping pong, or any other games that strayed from the basic contests. Another way the games of Ancient Greece differ from the modern games is that the ancient games were always held in the same city of Olympia. That is much different from today, as the games are held in a different country every time and nations compete for the honor of holding the games in their country years in advance. Two things do remain constant though, the games are still held every four years and winning athletes are treated like gods. (Perseus)
Western Europe. But how did this western way of life come to be? Their are many different
Aqueducts brought water to the city of Rome. Roman cities began to expand quickly, which means that it would become one of the most populated cities in the world. According to document five in the Remarkable Rome Packet, the emperor of Rome knows that water was scarce the Romans had to find a way to transport water into the cities so they built more than 200 aqueducts. Aqueducts went through mountains, cities, and towns. It brought so much water to the city citizens were able to bathe, and have clean drinking water just like modern day.
Rome and Greece were both quite influential in today’s world, but one has impacted us more than the other. They were both very innovative society, creating, building, new useful tools that we use in today’s world. Although, Rome has created more that has helped shaped how we live and work in the current world. Romans learned to share ideas and improve their society as a whole. They had education available and any laws made, applied to everyone. The structure of the Roman government and the economy also helped shape ours into what it is today. Between Greece and Rome, Rome has made the biggest impact on the United States today.
The Olympic Games have been around for many centuries. They are interesting and thrilling to watch. However they're have been many changes since the first ever Olympic Games.
Rome and Greece were very similar to one another in many ways. Rome copied methods the Greeks used and incorporated them into their culture. For example, the Greek gods and roman gods are similar but still different. Western civilizations also incorporated ideas into their culture. For example architecture, democracy (government), and academics like science, math, and linguistics.
Ancient civilizations such as Greece and Rome were conquered and ended hundreds of years ago, yet the influence they still have on the world today is astounding. Take for example architecture and governments, when you drive around how often do you see columns or slanted roofs? Also, democracy and monarchies that we have in America and England, can you guess where we got those ideas from, you guessed it Ancient Greece and Rome.
Modern Day Olympics are a huge tradition that sweeps the screens of televisions across the world. Competitors take the arena with uniforms that dawn their countries colors and designs that are meant to resemble their designated flag. For months the news is centered around the games; the preparation, the athletes, and of course the competition. Countries aren 't obsessed, they are inspired and full of pride seeing athletes from their country compete and show their incredible skill. This tradition dates back to ancient Greece where the games began. Tony Perrottet writes about the traditions of the ancient game in his book The Naked Olympics.
Ancient Greek culture has made many contributions to western civilization. In fact, the ancient Greeks affected our current style of government, fine arts, sports, and viewpoints on life. The legacy of this culture has had a substantial impact on today’s culture, from athletic events such as the Olympics to the storytelling structure of films. Nevertheless, the culture of the ancient Greeks was overall very distinct in many areas, including those of religion, human rights, war, and government.
One of the most renowned inspirations from the Greeks would be the Greek philosophy of citizenship and Roman impact on the legal world. In Greece, a true member of society was a participating citizen which directly correlates with the modern world in how we as societies view participation in government. In contrast, Roman inspiration on the modern world is heavily seen through architecture especially with columns and the pantheon. In the United States, the US Capitol Building was built with a dome shaped rotunda resembling the pantheon in a way to symbolize power and strength as such the Romans did through their temples. In regards to religion, the ancient Romans are responsible for the spread of Christianity which is today the most followed religion in the world. Both ancient Greece and Rome have influenced the daily aspects of modern life through the Greek style of showering which is a daily ritual for most decent humans and the Roman style of eating three-meals a day and even dessert which are special daily rituals especially for college students. Even so, both civilizations have directly influenced the American system of government from the basis of democracy in Greece to the bicameral legislature of Rome that was a defining factor is the establishment of our nation through the Great Compromise. Furthermore, the seventh amendment to the United States Constitution establishing a trial by jury is a direct reflection of ancient Greece policies as well as the checks and balances system of Rome that the federal government cherishes. A popular reincarnation of the Greek life on modern culture is the use of the Greek alphabet to name fraternities and sororities. While this is not a direct reincarnation of the Greek lifestyle, the fraternities and sororities use the Greek alphabet to give themselves a
1. The Olympic Games is an event where many athletes from all across the world come to the Games to represent their country. The first known Olympic Games occurred in ancient Greece, in 776 BC. Each game took place every four years; this is where the current Olympics got the tradition. Currently the Olympics are split into two games, one during the summer and one in the winter. Each of them held in a different place. There are two years between a summer game and a winter game; however there are 4 years between two summer games and two winter games. The first Olympic
