Luxurious, flamboyant and heavenly are three words to describe Middle Age Gothic Cathedrals of their time. Going to such great lengths in trying to compete with other cathedrals with the creation of arches and vaults in cathedrals to have the tallest building with additional interior and exterior features. Architects during the middle Ages incorporated such elaborate details to ensure their cathedral were the best of them all. These architectures were fueled by faith and engineering skills to guide them in constructing such enormous and legendary cathedrals. Two important keys to constructing a secure and solid vault is, successful lighting and height within the cathedral. Vaults were built for the need of supporting gigantic structures weight capacities like these Gothic churches. The creation of vaults have further progressed as years have passed to ensure stability. By contributing to medieval engineering, the invention of vaults has proven to be effective in improving the structure of these enormous cathedrals. The arch today is considered the structural form that is proven to be effective. To keep the structure of the arch in place seemed to be a difficult task for architects to master. As the increase of the amount of pressure occurs, this causes the arches to become compressed. When tension is applied however, forces the arch from the bottom to spread outward, while the superior of the arch caves inward and collapsing eventually. During the middle ages, architects realized that blocks were too difficult to use for creating beams so they decided that it was time for a new source as a building block for construction. Architects soon realized that the creation of arches was the ideal form for building successful cathedrals. The key to building these arches that architects found was that arches can withstand enormous amounts of pressure as long as the right support is in the correct placements.

As the design of arches progressed as time passed, with the help of a keystone, this made sure to securely lock the arch into place for additional support for creating such superior arches. The keystone is the most critical piece in building the arch itself, but the keystone also has the least amount of force but seems to be have such an important role in the building process. The development of the arch is to contribute in the determination for architects to build upward in the cathedrals.
