Leopard Man and Conformist
In this article, “The Sociology of Leopard Man”, Logan Feys asserts that individuals change their appearance and the way they act because they are desperate for society's attention. Feys supports this assertion by using pathos. Logan Feys purpose is to help people understand that society is under constant pressure to surrender their individuality and that people should learn to control it. Logan uses a judgemental tone which is directed to society. I totally disagree with Feys statement about human individuality because we as humans do not always change to impress others or to fit in.
In Logan Fey’s article, he argues that people with tattoos, piercings or extraordinary hair do these things for attention. The thing is that everyone does that that so they can express themselves, not necessarily for the attention. I think people shouldn’t judge people based on their appearance or their choice of style. Feys states “Pop psychologists reassure the masses that abnormal people suffer from psychological disorders”(Feys 1). I would disagree with this statement as well. The reason why I disagree with this is because just because someone looks a different way or a way you haven't seen before doesn't mean they have a

disorder. They may do it just to express themselves but not to get the attention from others. Furthermore, Logan asserts that people act a certain way depending who they are with.
Logan said “Society tends to discourage people from expressing their unique ideas and behaving in ways that are different from their peers”(Feys 1). Although, not everyone changes to impress society or to get an approval from others. I have met some people who act the same way with everyone which does not mean everyone changes to conform in others presence. When they are with their friends, they act immature and at the same time, when they are with their parents they act the same way. Also Logan said that Leopard Man did not change to get the attention or to conform within
society. Although some people can say that conformity is everywhere such as school, work and many common places in society. However, just because nonconformist are seen in a different manner it does not mean that they are doing it to be accepted. In society today, many people express their individuality through diversity of thought, appearance or personal values that is more widely accepted as opposed to past generations. Feys says, ” Be psychologically free enough and strong enough to live independently, leaving society and entering society on no one’s terms but your own”(Feys 2). He fails to see that “to live independently” can also be seen and experienced in today’s society where there is more choice of individuality expression with the liberty of leaving society or living within society while maintaining personal confidence for our individuality. In conclusion, I do believe in some of Logan's opinions such as that people are desperate for society’s attention. Some would go to such lengths for the approval of society which in my opinion is not all that important; however, I agree with him only to a certain point. However, it is simply not true that everyone changes to impress society nor do they purposely act a differently to be accepted, but rather express one’s individuality. Conformity can be very crucial, infact a lot of people eventually start hurting themselves or doing drugs just because they don't feel themselves anymore.Why can't society change? why can't that one kid that always follows everyone in the back can turn into the kid that just hangs with the people they really wanna hang with?We need to embrace ourselves so we can stop all this conformity from consuming us.Tupac was a nonconformist, he always did what made him happy and always told the truth.
Individualism and conformity—two very commonly used terms to describe anyone in today’s times. In comparison to the article “The Sociology of Leopard Man,” written by Logan Feys, one of the most notable quotes that relates to individualism and conformity is “to be a human is to be an individual human, with individual tastes [.][and]talents [.] that are distinct from those of others. Living in society, we are under constant pressure to surrender our individuality to the will of the majority, the school, the workplace, the family,.” (Feys Par. 6.)
When you look at yourself in the mirror, probably, you are wondering what is human nature, how does it affect us? We all say that men’s nature at birth is good. But the truth is we realize more and more darkness of humanity along with we grow up, and that changes us inattentively. Today, I would like to present human nature base on the transition of Charlie who is the main character in Craig Silvey’s ‘Jasper Jones’.
Individuality is a valued character in society and is what makes us who we are, if we lose our individuality and conform we lose ourselves. In the article “The Sociology of Leopard Man” by Logan Feys, the author describes what he thinks it means to be an individual and the dangers of conformity. Leopard Man lives in seclusion and is covered in tattoos, Feys uses him as an example of an individual that does not care what the world thinks of him. I agree almost completely agree with Feys’s ideas about individuality. I agree because of Feys’s points about false normality, and how going against conformity is what makes an individual, however I disagree with his repeated use of the word freak, but see why he would use this language.
Conformity, the act of changing to fit in. Conformity can completely change a person whether it be their looks, such as their the way they dress, or their personality, like the way they act around certain people. In The Sociology of Leopard Man Logan Feys argues that being human has a right to it, and that right is to be who you are. Society pushes out certain people for not fitting in with everyone else, but also says that nobody should fit in, because everyone has a different personality.
Perhaps, despite consistent changes, our individuality is not completely renewed. Not renewed when trends are altered, or when we’ve lost interest in our former idols. Perhaps, when our minds are taken to think as another would, our individualities are only being transformed to fit that state. Change could very possibly be the number one ingredient necessary to loss of uniqueness. Humans can adjust quite quickly to different environments, and that maybe as much a curse as it is a gift. People change themselves too hastily, at times, not caring for the possibility that they are going against things they want, need and love.
Conformity means a change in one’s behavior due to the real or imagined influence of other people. As a teenager, the pressure to conform to the societal “norm” plays a major role in shaping one’s character. Whether this means doing what social groups want or expect you to do or changing who you are to fit in. During class, we watched films such as Mean Girls, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, and The Breakfast Club which demonstrate how the pressure to conform into society can change who you are. In the movies we have seen, conformity was most common during high school.
A person’s identity can be influenced a lot by society if they allow it to. People are always changing due to society because a lot of people care about what others think of them and want to fit in. Some will even try to change themselves completely like the characters in American Born Chinese by Gene Luen Yang. In the book, both the Monkey King and Jin Wang struggled to realize who they really are due to the pressure of the world around them trying to make them change. The monkey king changed his form and started acting differently in order to try to earn people’s respect. Jin did something similar to try to get people to treat him like
In society, people cling to conformity. It's an easy way to avoid trouble or ridicule. Cyrus explains this to Adam when he's describing life in the army: "you'll do things because the others do them. You'll feel the danger in any difference whatever-a danger to the whole crowd of like-thinking, like-acting men." And what happens when someone doesn't conform? "The whole machine devotes itself coldly to the destruction of his difference." (25)
Everybody wants to be accepted, yet society is not so forgiving. It bends you and changes you until you are like everyone else. Society depends on conformity and it forces it upon people. In Emerson's Self Reliance, he says "Society is a joint stock company, in which the members agree, for the better securing of his bread to each shareholder, to surrender the liberty and culture of the eater." People are willing to sacrifice their own hopes and freedoms just to get the bread to survive. Although the society that we are living in is different than the one the Emerson's essay, the idea of fitting in still exists today. Although society and our minds make us think a certain way, we should always trust our better judgment instead of just conforming to society.
If conformity means to “conform to a social role… brought about by a desire to ‘fit in’ or be liked,” then the characters of Never Let Me Go are a wonderful example (McLeod). In Hailsham, the school where the Ruth, Tommy, and Kathy grow up, the Guardians expect all of the students to be extremely creative;
...conform to their peers when they are uncertain about their social identity and when they are in the presence of someone they perceive to have higher status than they do (Santrock, 2012).
Being the social animals, humans need a sense of belonging in a society. Therefore, people are willing to do anything to fit in and to avoid a social punishment, including, changing their
People have many similarities and differences in life. Some are similar when they blend in with the common society while others can be different by showing their true self. The similarities and differences of a person can be considered as the nonconformity and conformity of how he or she responds. The terms “conformity” means to blend in and “nonconformity” means to stand out. Also, people have the ability to know when to either conform or nonconform based on their current situation. Though many people may argue that conformity is the best social group, most will agree that nonconformity triumphs over conformity because people can represent their unique differences by showing their physical appearances and can create their
