Analysis of South of the Slot by Jack London
The slot is a metaphor of the “class cleavage of society”. There was a contrast between the North and South of the Slot in terms of building types: in the North were the higher-class centers of diversion, lodging, and business; and in the South were the lower-class centers of lodging, unskilled work/business. The buildings are figures of two contrasting classes that were segregated (?). In order to study the southern people (the working class) a sociology professor of the University of CA, Freddie Drummond (FD), decides to work temporarily as an unskilled laborer. Initially he experiences social problems of adaptation and acceptance by his fellow workers. For example, he doesn’t understand their insistent admonitions to reduce his work pace. As a result of his fierce competition against them, by the 6th day FD doubles his earnings. He misunderstands their lack of loyalty to the business, and looks down on them. Being unable to convince Drummond, and as a last resort, his co-workers jumped on him and attacked him so badly that he becomes ill. Once recovered, Drummond changes job. He finds himself working as a fruit-distributor among the women and decides not to change their work conditions. In six months, Drummond works at many jobs, and succeeds in imitating a genuine worker. Nickel And Dimed: Occupations Barbara Ehrenreich provides evidence in “Nickel and Dimed” that she’s an outstanding author with this book. Its engaging and compelling, no question about that. But it’s hard to get from side to side at times since of the authors attitudes. Her key summit is to carry concentration to the scrape of the working deprived, but she manages to be both abusive and divisive. Occupation on attacking our industrialist system, she fails to become aware of that the endurance of upper classes seems to be what motivates the poor, fairly than what dispirits them. She blames capitalism for the injustices of the world, slightly than easy bad management techniques. In Little Girls in Pretty Boxes the author used pathos and interviewing to share the stories of these overly dedicated youth. Joan Ryan wrote to show how these young, talented, sophisticated women can hide the harsh reality of the sport. In her biography she listed the physical problems that these young girls go through. In Of mice and men there are a few characters that act like they are from the city and some that work for a living which represents the lower classes. This element can be found when Lennie and George are working, when the boss is demanding the workers to work, and when the men won’t let Crooks join in “‘Why ain’t you wanted? Lennie asked ‘cause I’m black. They play cards in there, but I can’t play because I’m black’”(Steinbeck,1937,p68). A place meant level inequalities only added to the immense imbalance of superiority; this place was a courtroom, where inequality was supposed to be diminished. As white supremacy developed, blacks weren’t as socially accepted and were mistreated. The novel brought focus to a multitude of injustices that would essentially spur change to create a more integrated society in the future. Just as the novel explained how change was in the making, history itself during this time shows how assimilation was in the working. Even though today racial integration is very prominent there are still instances where people are discriminated. Segregation, although not as furious of a fire as it was during this time period, is still an ignited spark in some people’s souls today.

Stoksie was a little to ambitious for a bagger, and management was regarded like the rest of the animals.

Society doesn’t see low wage workers by their genuine attitude towards their paying customers, but as an outcast because of their occupational status. However, one individual changes the way upper classes view the working class in the form of a book. Barbara Ehrenreich, author of Nickel and Dimed, brings the audience into her personal journey as an intentional low-wage worker. Ehrenreich accentuates how society views low-wage workers: she highlights how society sees low-wage workers as drug and alcohol abusers, she reveals how society set up traps to prove that low-wage workers are liars and thieves, and shows how society creates a psychological effect, which affects how the working class views themselves.
