Friendship ends with a tragic death. The book “Of Mice and Men” helps decipher realistic events, characters from cities and lower classes, and speech patterns. In Of mice and men there are a few characters that act like they are from the city and some that work for a living which represents the lower classes. This element can be found when Lennie and George are working, when the boss is demanding the workers to work, and when the men won’t let Crooks join in “‘Why ain’t you wanted? Lennie asked ‘cause I’m black. They play cards in there, but I can’t play because I’m black’”(Steinbeck,1937,p68). This quote shows how the lower class you are in the condition of how you are treated is degrading to self-esteem and the segregation of whites and blacks. The last realism value is the use of everyday speech patterns to reveal class distinctions. Everyone has a different way a speaking and one way of classifying that is of class. This element can be found anywhere in the book when a character talks. For example, “‘Yeah? Married two weeks and got the eye? Maybe that’s why Curley’s pants is full of ants’”(Steinbeck,1937,p68). This quote shows how one of the characters talks and it’s different from how people talk in 2016. It also shows how one class will talk differently than another
