Influence of Realism on Literature
After World War I, American people and the authors among them
were left disillusioned by the effects that war had on their society.
America needed a literature that would explain what had happened and
what was happening to their society. American writers turned to what
is now known as modernism. The influence of 19th Century realism and
naturalism and their truthful representation of American life and
people was evident in post World War I modernism. This paper will try
to prove this by presenting the basic ideas and of these literary
genres, literary examples of each, and then make connections between
the two literary movements. Realism Modernism not only depicted
American society after World War I accurately and unbiasedly, but also
tried to find the solutions brought upon by the suffering created by
the war (Elliott 705).
The realistic movement of the late 19th century saw authors
accurately depict life and it’s problems. Realists attempted to “give
a comprehensive picture of modern life” (Elliott 502) by presenting
the entire picture. They did not try to give one view of life but
instead attempted to show the different classes, manners, and
stratification of life in America. Realists created this picture of
America by combining a wide variety of “details derived from
observation and documentation...” to “approach the norm of
experience...” (3). Along with this technique, realists compared the
“objective or absolute existence” in America to that of the “universal
truths, or observed facts of life” (Harvey 12). In other words,
realists objectively looked at American society and pointed out the
aspects that it had in common with the general truths of existence.
This realistic movement evolved as a result of many changes
and transitions in American culture. In the late 1800’s, the United
States was experiencing “swift growth and change” as a result of a
changing economy, society, and culture because of an influx in the
number of immigrants into America. Realists such as Henry James and
William Dean Howells, two of the most prolific writers of the
Nineteenth-century, used typical realistic methods to create an
accurate depiction of changing American life.
He was the first Hispanic baseball player to be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame and the first to reach three thousand hits. His induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame was specifically special because an exception was made for him to be inducted into the Hall of Fame after his unexpected death. Usually baseball players cannot be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame for at least five years after they quit playing, but Clemente was inducted in 1973. With all that being said, Clemente also never forgot where he came
Literary realism has been defined by George J. Becker in an essay called Modern Language Quarterly with three criteria: “verisimilitude of detail…an effort to approach the norm of experience…and an objective, so far as an artist can achieve objectivity, rather than a subjective or idealistic view of human nature and experience” (Pizer 1). This, however, is not the only definition of realism that exists. Donald Pizer proposed to define realism as is applied to the “late nineteenth-century American novel” (2). This is important ...

Sports have served as a platform on which the subject of race has been highlighted. Sports have unfailingly been considered the microcosm of society. This is because the playing fields have revealed the dominant culture’s attitudes and beliefs that people held about race relations throughout history in the United States. Many racial barriers were broken in the world of sports long before they were crossed in the realm of mainstream society as a whole. From Jackie Robinson breaking the color barrier in Major League Baseball during the year of 1947 to Tommie Smith and John Carlos raising their fists clad in black gloves during the 1968 Mexico City Summer Olympics, sports have started conversations about race in the United States that have undeniably changed the course of race relations in the United States.
When people think of the integration of Major League Baseball, the often remember the name Jackie Robinson. On April 15, 1947, “Jackie Robinson, a black man, played first base for the Dodgers at Ebbets Field in Brooklyn, New York, shattering baseball's age-old color line” (Stewart 49). Robinson was the f...
Roberto Clemente signed a deal with the Brooklyn Dodgers and played with their minor league team, the Montreal Royals, for a season. The next year he went to play for the Pittsburgh Pirates and made his major league debut in 1955.
Students’ wouldn’t be able to hold down a job is the second reason they shouldn’t dropout of high school. Many employers would like to have someone who has been too high school and that have been educated so they can handle money and add things p...
The strengths of creating a cloud computing strategy for stuff4u.com can be a huge difference in profit margin down the road for the company. One of the strengths that cloud computing provides for companies is that it maximizes the effectiveness of shared resources within an organization. When using this approach stuff4u does not have to use all of its computing power and at the same time it will save money on its energy costs. Cloud computing allows multiple employees access to a single server to retrieve and update their data without purchasing licenses for different applications. This will also save money for stuff4you as a company, and will increase profit margin for the company as it cut s down on its expenses. A switch to SaaS software run system will also allow compatibility for a...
Teenagers dropping out of high school affect every single person in America. However, most people do not understand why they should personally concern themselves with one of the most stereotyped subsets of the United States’ population. One unacknowledged fact about dropouts is that they will, over the course of their lifetime, cost the United States government $72,000 while high school graduates will benefit the government $315,000 (Emery). This affects every person in America. Taxpayers and their families are forced to pay for the services high school dropouts need. Such services include food stamps, welfare, incarceration costs, and even healthcare. Since high school dropouts are expected to make drastically less money than their classmates who did graduate, they need to rely on the aforementioned services at some point in their life; some high school dropouts rely on government assistance throughout their entire life. High school dropouts are also 63 times more likely to become incarcerated than college graduates (Breslow). This also puts a huge strain on taxpayers and their families with the cost to run prisons rising each year.
High school is the beginning of a new chapter for every student. It is the start of a right passage for young adults. It not only marks a big achievement to finish high school, but it is a greater stepping stone to higher education and career opportunities. It is through hard work that students make it to the end and hopefully are able to continue higher education. Many students make it through easily but many struggle during the process and decide or are even forced to leave their education. But why do students lose their interest in school? It may be that when students notice they are not successful they lose their drive and motivation and would rather do something else with their life that they think is productive. Without success students lose incentives to go to school. Consequently, they have no attachment to their school. Personal problems affecting students seem to be the main cause for students to drop out of high school. Pregnancy is a main factor that affects female students. As stated, “lack of parental and educational support and becoming a parent are two of the most common reasons younger Americans drop out of high school, according to data re...
The students and their families are the most impacted by the high school dropout prevention programs. High school graduates have higher sense of accomplishment and a greater skill set needed to succeed in this faltering economy. Kimberly Knestings stated in “Students at Risk for School Dropout: Supporting their Persistence”, “If students do not believe that they benefit from earning a diploma, and if they do not accept responsibility for doing their work and following school rules, then their attempts at persistence are unlikely to be successful.” Additionally, society is positively impacted by a greater number of high school graduates. Since graduates earn more, they are less likely to commit crimes for money nor do they have to rely on public assistance. Funding for welfare programs and unemployment programs can ...
Between the years of 1865 and 1914, American literature was mainly comprised of three writing styles: realism, regionalism, and naturalism. Realism aims to portray life realistically. Though realism...
There are many effects on society as a whole due to students that drop out of high school. The effects on the student who drops out are just as great as they are on society. “Of the 4 million students who enter high school every year, one million of them will drop out before graduation” (Whitaker, 2012). When an individual makes the conscious decision to drop out of high school, many times the decision is made without regard to the consequences that can ensue. There are many effects of the decision on the individual, their families, and society as a whole. The leading reasons for dropping out of high school surround academic difficulty and failure, poor attendance, being held back, disengagement from school, and other life factors (Convisor, n.d.). This is an indication that most of these teens do not think about (or sometimes even care about) how decisions made today will effect tomorrow. This paper is to inform the reader of the effects of students dropping out of high school. Included will be effects on the individuals, their families, and society.
Regrettably, some students must drop out of school and use that time to get a job to help support their families. Female students who become pregnant have to drop out to take care of their child. Poor choices constrain some students to land themselves behind bars before their education becomes complete. Primary caretakers becoming ill and/or dying can force high schoolers to drop out and to take on the role of their family member, who has now become unable (“School Dropout”). These events can leave kids all over the country with two different options that have a few stunning similarities; receiving their GED, or dropping out of high school without a
