Realistic works of fiction are similar to paintings, while we will get to the end result of the painting or novel, the artist or writer is still our guide; the author is then left to “paint” the picture or in this case, write a work of fiction, capturing the picture in their own peculiar, chronological order. While the novel is still created, it is up to Flaubert to decipher which parts he writes first. The story “A Simple Heart” is still the realistic mimic of the life of Félicité, but Flaubert is in complete control of what we will know and when we will know information about her. I believe stories such as “A Simple Heart” greatly mimic genuine life, actions and the personalities of people in real life. In this story, there is no place where Flaubert spends time exaggerating Félicité’s story, yet he elegantly mimics it as her reality: gritty. Such as with the story, “A Simple Heart,” it has been found that realistic authors take great inspiration from their surroundings, and thereby, creating a more realistic novel. By relating characters inside a novel to real life people and having a proper mindset, I do believe realism can be an achievable goal for these realistic writers who choose to focus on the unadulterated picture of
A book that has a clear understanding of what is “real” is often thought to be a quality book. Although what is thought to be “real” is different for everyone, for me it is how easily I am able to relate to the characters in the book. If I can sympathize and understand what they are going through on an emotional level and can put myself in their shoes, I am more apt to enjoy the story. Narrative style and structure play a very important role here; because it is through these that we get a sense of what type of realism is being portrayed. For example, in Sarah, Plain and Tall, the realism displayed is emotional realism.
After learning and reading about Kate Chopin and Nathaniel Hawthorne, one can recognize how their life experiences and era shape the message of their literary works. These two writers, born almost fifty years apart, had a completely different family setting, thus their writings differ and so does their morals. In literature, personal experiences in the writers’ lives have a great significance in their writing style, theme, and symbolism.

In the article, “The Question of Poe’s Narrators” James W. Gargano discusses the criticize in “The Tell-Tale Heart” by Edgar Allen Poe and tries to help the readers understand why Poe writes the way he does and identifies some of the quotes in his work. According, to Gargano, other authors view’s Poe’s work as “cheap or embarrassing Gothic Style” (177). The author is saying that Poe’s work makes the reader look at themselves not only the work. The author explores three main points. Some author thinks that Poe’s life is reflected in a lot of his work, uses dramatic language to show his style in work, and explains how Poe’s work manipulates his readers to understand.

In the novel Madame Bovary by Gustave Flaubert, one is introduced to Charles Bovary as a young school boy who tries too hard to fit in, then he becomes a young man who nearly fails his medical exam, and last he falls in love with Emma who finds him “boring”. Throughout the book, Charles fails at school, being a doctor and most important love. His attempts at these things are noble and it makes one feel sympathetic toward the character.
Flaubert and Allende set their books during times of great technological change and growth to demonstrate how they feel technology masks the true nature of man. At the agricultural show, Flaubert contrasts the councilor's speech with Emma and Rodolphe's actions to unveil the primal nature of humans even during times of growth. The councilor declares, "Everywhere commerce and the arts are flourishing; everywhere new means of communication . . . establish within it new relations"(Flaubert 186-187). During this discussion of progress, Emma and Rodolphe begin their affair. Emma is unable to stay faithful because Flaubert believes man is just a lustful animal trying to procreate and no progress can overcome this nature. Gustave Flaubert presents one extreme side of human life many would very much rather think does not exist. He presents a tale of sensual symbolism within the life of Charles Bovary. Madame Bovary is the story of Emma Bovary, but within the scope of symbolic meaning, the make-up of Charles is addressed. It is representative of deep sadness and a despondent outlook on life whose many symbols are, at times, as deeply embedded in the story line as a thorn in a callous heel. The elements making up the very person of Charles Bovary remain excruciatingly evident, haunting his every move.
The characters Charles and Emma of Gustave Flaubert’s novel, Madame Bovary, escape from the drudgery and monotony of their life through fantasy. For Emma, it is a direct manipulation of her world, while for Charles it is disillusionment with the world. Each of these characters lives in complete ignorance of the true personality of the other. Emma ignores Charles's simple love and devotion while Charles is oblivious of Emma's affairs.
Madame Bovary, a novel by Gustave Flaubert, describes life in the provinces. While depicting the provincial manners, customs, codes and norms, the novel puts great emphasis on its protagonist, Emma Bovary who is a representative of a provincial woman. Concerning the fundamental typicality in Emma Bovary’s story, Flaubert points out: “My poor Bovary is no doubt suffering and weeping at this very moment in twenty French villages at once.” (Heath, 54). Yet, Emma Bovary’s story emerges as a result of her difference from the rest of the society she lives in. She is in conflict with her mediocre and tedious surroundings in respect of the responses she makes to the world she lives in. Among the three basic responses made by human beings, Emma’s response is “dreaming of an impossible absolute” while others around her “unquestionably accept things as they are” or “coldly and practically profiteer from whatever circumstances they meet.” (Fairlie, 33). However, Emma’s pursuit of ideals which leads to the imagining of passion, luxury and ecstasy prevents her from seeing the world in a realistic perspective or causes her to confuse reality and imagination with each other.

Gustave Flaubert of Madame Bovary and Isabel Allende of The House of the Spirits both manipulate elements of genre, dialogue, and style in relation to suspense in order to comment on the romantic ideas of destiny and fate. While they both use these techniques in relation to suspense and anticipation, Flaubert minimizes the importance of fate while Allende seeks to promote it. Flaubert builds suspense for a large amount of time and suddenly destroys or ignores it, but Allende destroys anticipation almost immediately. The realist elements, the ironic and misleading dialogue, and the contradictory syntax in Madame Bovary allow Flaubert to build suspense and then remove it to downplay the importance of fate. On the other hand, the magic realism techniques, the prophetic dialogue and narration, and the flat diction throughout The House of the Spirits allow Allende to idealize the idea of destiny.
With this book, regarding plot, again, we don’t have the classical beginning, action, ending - we have a book that has a plot that rotates around the narrator’s love of Flaubert. It is as well a novel that has a very innovative type of plot, a novel that is part literary criticism, part bibliography and part fiction. In the given quote, the character talks about his wife that passed away. He tries to describe her in a very unusual way. Thoughts are inconsistent, and they give the impression that the narrator has a hard time describing her. The flow is constantly interrupted, and none of the description seem to finalize, but they actually end up finalizing as a whole. Writers like Mark Twain wrote about what really mattered to the majority of the population. His stories were not considered fairy tales, but narratives. Realism was an important change in literature, because it allowed the average Joe story to be alright. Instead of paying or reading a story about something you will never have, a person will read about the everyday problems. People saw that humans had more in common than they taught. Mark Twain’s narrative, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn expose the literary movement that is known today as Realism. Mark Twain also criticizes the “ills” of the American society, which he hopes he could be able to correct by raising awareness to the problem.
