Sally is amongst the most wonderful mothers I have ever known. She begins each morning – rain-or-shine, lively-or-sick – at three o’clock sharp, when the late night grasshopper chirps are mixed with those of the early birds’. Now, she doesn’t arrive at work until nine and only spend thirty minutes getting herself freshened-up, dressed, and fed. So where does all of her remaining time go? The short answer is: Sally is devoted to singlehandedly preparing her daughter for each day ahead. No lack of congratulations is welcomed for her nor the thousands of mothers who struggle with the same tasks of caring for their infants. Like other mothers, Sally wakes, bathes, dresses, feeds, and prepares a list of items that her daughter will need at the …show more content…
This warning comes directly from one of the top scientific health organizations, yet has proven insufficient. As the government cannot decide how to financially respond to such a threat, a pregnant mother is held hostage indoors, where she cannot help her distress. What if, one of the times, outdoors, she is bitten by an infected mosquito; what would her future encompass then? The ambiguity she must endure is certainly unfair. She can only hope that the government reacts with some concern or empathy, for these families, before unwilling mothers take drastic measures into their despairing …show more content…
priority than a real representation of America’s emergent health protection. The summer Olympic games are only five weeks away in a place where Zika has the world’s largest impact on its residence – Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. However, the speculation that there’s real risk, is disturbingly quiet. That is, because intentions of thousands of U.S. citizens are to disregard the proven health concerns and still attend the games. If the gaming coordinators along with the government would reach a consensus with some of the athletes who are refusing to attend –Roy McIlroy, Tejay van Garderen, and LeBron James – many fans and other athletes would surely follow. Instead, we have our most elite athletes nonchalant, just as the opposing people to clone mosquitoes and discombobulated funding benefactors. What is to gain, proving science wrong; can it be
W. S. Ross once said “The hand that rocks the cradle is the hand that rules the world.” As simple as this quip may sound, its complex implications are amplified through the life of every person born since the beginning of humanity. What attribute makes a mother such an extraordinary influence over her young? One such attribute is the ability to nurture. Beyond the normal challenges of cooking, cleaning, schooling, singing, feeding, and changing is the motivation by which such sacrifices are made possible. One cannot raise a child without mutual respect. Emotion and anxiety must drive her instincts. Her ability to foster is only heightened by minute personal imperfections and overwhelming responsibility that lead to a lack of confidence. Yet the prevailing characteristic that separates a ‘birth giver’ from a ‘mother’ is the unconditional, undying, and at times underestimated love for her child. To be a mother in the purest sense, she must embrace this notion of nurture.
As a young mother, the narrator expresses how she wanted to be the best mother, the right mother for her child Emily. She admits that she was a first time mother ? ?with all the rigidity of first motherhood?? She reads books to educate her self and she believes the ?experts? and what makes the best kind of mother. Tillie Olsen writes about how the character, through physical sacrifice, nursed her child. The story raises our awareness of gender and family roles by the comments of the narrator. We become aware of the constraints we place upon ourselves t...

It is not unusual for an athlete to have any sort of outbreak during the games (Riccobono). Authorities and health officials are taking this situation very seriously to protect athletes and spectators (Riccobono). All athletes and spectators should be taking smart measures to avoid mosquitoes during the games, like wear extra clothes, have bug repellent, and stay in mobile air conditioned places if possible (?Zika concerns mount?). It would be the only time in history that the Olympic Games have been changed due to health reasons. Rio?s mayor, Eduardo Paes states, ?this is not going to be an Olympics of wasting money.? The colder temperatures around the time of the Olympics should help mosquito population be at a lower risk. Officials are working on the psychological aspect of athletes being scared about the Zika virus (Romero and Ruiz). Federal troops are spraying for mosquitoes across the country (LaGrave).
Living in the world that consists of three thousand different types of mosquitoes is frightening. People got used to a daily routine of waking up and getting to their jobs, that many of them are so focused on their career and family that they do not even notice and pay much attention when they are getting bitten by mosquitoes. Unfortunately not many people were aware of the fact that not all insects are safe, many of mosquitoes transfer infections, but we were not concentrating on that since it was considered not a common issue. As a repercussion, people did not begin to react and notice that something wrong with them when Aedes mosquitoes began their attempt on ruining people’s social, physical and psychological lives by transferring a Zika virus to the once who are bitten.
In her essay, “Motherhood: Who Needs It?”, Betty Rollin emphasizes the pressures of motherhood that society puts on women and highlights the fact that becoming a mother is not a natural instinct.
The article ‘Zika Virus and Microcephaly’ has broadly discussed the Zika virus. Zika virus has spread uncontrollably through South and Central America. There has been many cases reported of infants getting affected by the by the disease while they are in their mother’s womb; and also their has been increase in reports of infants born with microcephaly. Microcephaly is a congenital condition in which the child’s brain is not developed completely and their head is abnormally small.
One of the health incidents that has occurred recently, given the summer months season, is the concern with the Zika virus. Although the Zika virus has minimal effect on the average person, the greater concern is with pregnant women and the affects to the unborn child. Devastating enough, the inability to prevent other issues, such as due pregnancy. According to CDC, “Zika infection during pregnancy can cause a serious birth defect of the brain called microcephaly, and is linked to other problems in fetuses and infants infected with Zika before birth”.
A few days ago, the first case of the Zika virus discovered in Dallas, Texas. The Zika virus is spread by mosquitos and can be contracted through sexual contact with an infected individual. Prior to this incident, experts were not able to tell whether the virus could be contracted through sex. Some major symptoms of the virus include joint aches, skin rash, fever and reddened eyes. According to William E. Scheweizer, only “1 out of 5 people” will display these virus symptoms. Many birth defects are also linked to the Zika virus, including a condition where infants are born with extremely small heads. In hopes of detecting early signs of the Zika virus, doctors have started to screen pregnant women. They also
Each day increases the number of American families that face the tasks of balancing demanding work schedules and family obligations. Unfortunately, in case after case one finds the woman carries the major portion of these obligations. Recently I spoke with the mother of two young daughters. She went on to describe how she handled the task this responsibility saying:
Valerie was fortunate enough to be able to take off from work for thirteen years to raise all four of her children; however, when her youngest turned two years old and her and her husband went through a divorce things changed. Valerie had to go back to work sooner than she had wanted to support her family. Valerie start part time until the youngest child was old enough to begin school. From that point on, Valerie was fortunate enough to alway work in the same school district as her children, but still she faced difficulties. Whenever a child was sick, it was her responsibility to drop everything to tend to their needs. Valerie noted that while she always planned to return to work, she felt “guilty that [she] could not give the younger two children as much attention as [she] gave the older two children” (Archetto). One major impact, balancing work and family life has on women is the internal guilt that mother’s feel for leaving their children. Society makes it clear that when a child needs something it is the mother’s job to drop everything, but if she is working and not able to do as much women feel a tremendous guilt. In Valerie’s case, she had to call for extra help when her schedule and her children’s schedules differed. She hired a woman to come to the house in the morning and afternoon to get the children ready for school and to pick them up until Valerie
Since Zika and West Nile have the same vectors, which are mosquitos, the same methods could be used for both diseases in order to address funding issues. State, tribal, local, and territorial governments have already planned for community readiness and engagement, day-to-day mosquito control, and the elimination of infected mosquito population to address vector-borne diseases, but the resources are lacking. The lack of resources is due to government leaders’ executive orders, proclamations, or emergency declarations that address public health issues that threaten the
Furthermore, the mother states that she is physically out of energy which means that the intimate relationship that she has with her husband is become less and less fruitful in the bed. Overall her experience of motherhood has been one of an unsatisfactory nature, but most importantly all of these child related tasks don’t come off as instinctual so why do every one thing that motherhood is ins
One of the crucial reasons that children have parents is because children need to know the vital ways to survive and navigate our world, but in The Giver they try to model a family without love like an artificial intelligence similar to a computer. In the book the citizens devalue bearing children, but in our society bearing a child is highly regarded and as seen as contributing to society. “‘I hope I get assigned birth mother!’ ‘Lily’ Mother said, ‘Don’t say that. There’s very little honor in that assignment.’” This quote explains how birth mothers are looked upon, not very highly. Ultimately Mothers in our community are looked upon to instill compassion, love, empathy, and all the valuable characteristics that are considered to be
Emma heard the pronouncement each night from her bedroom, which was right off the kitchen. She didn’t understand how preparing one meal a day kept intact her mother’s sense of motherhood. When she tried to discuss it with her dad, he just told her to be patient with her mother; that she was going through something tough.
