“Look at your Man, now look at me…sadly he isn’t me” This is an Old Spice Advertisement that targets women who purchase female hygiene products, like shampoo and body wash, for their “man.” Isaiah Mustafa is a former practice squad football player and is the only actor appearing in this advertisement. This well known African American football player is very attractive and may have a sexual appeal towards women. This aberration is different since one always sees a white folk as the dominant character. “The Man Your Man Could Smell Like” Ad was shown during the super bowl in February of 2010. Old Spice’s overall message is that anything is possible when a ladies “man” smells like an old spice man and not a women.
In order for the producer’s

Mustafa assumes that all women viewing the ad would want to date a man like him. He states in the picture Ad, “look at your man, now look at me… sadly he isn’t me,’’ He is putting down the women who try to save money by buying a nominal number, most of the time just one shampoo product, and Mustafa is trying to convince them to buy male scented shampoo for their husband. However, the actual audience targeted in this Ad is men. He indirectly tells men to stop using feminine products because that makes them less of a man. By buying Old Spice, however, their manhood is returned because they smell like a man. Also, Mustafa wants to peer pressure the man watching the commercial to tell their wives to stop buying them “lady-scented.” He compares himself a lot to the other man viewing the commercial by saying “Look at your man, now look at me… Sadly he isn’t me.” With this sentence, Mustafa can get some serious reaction from the stereotypical Macho-Man because these men do not like to be compared to other successful and handsome men. Therefore, Mustafa reaches his goal of trying to persuade men to buy Old Spice
By quoting the commercial, and analyzing the logos and pathos, and ethos it uses, Gray has adequately used the rhetorical appeal of logos. She also supports her statements by comparing the Hanes commercial to other underwear commericials. “Underwear commercials in general seem to abound in their portrayal of morning sunrises and beautiful people making beds.” Throughout the entire article, from her describing the scene of the commercial, to talking about the stereotypical men, women, and underwear commercials, she is able to stir emotion from the audience. “Women on the other hand…know how to be women…Just show a woman good old fashioned love scene and most likely she’s sold.” Because Gray was just a Freshmen in college when she wrote this essay, she does not establish credibility in terms of her
It clearly depicts characteristics of Craig’s men’s men and men’s women. Firstly, the commercial was aired during sports related shows, which a lot of men tend to watch. The lead male in the commercial was muscular and handsome, radiating clear masculinity. He is also has unchallenged freedom since he is not portrayed as being tied down to any responsibility. In addition, Craig states that, “On the other hand, the absence of women must not suggest homosexuality. Men’s men are clearly heterosexual.” His point is that even if there are no women in the commercial, there has to be a clear indicator that the men are not homosexuals. Indicators include that men in ads are heterosexuals are that more than two males are present and the men are introduced as brothers.
All of the people on his body are working together to show that whoever uses this shower gel, others will want to be around. Old Spice’s statement that they put at the bottom of the advertisement flows smoothly with what is going on. The statement does not catch a person’s eye right away, since the snow-covered man is the main feature. After analyzing all the people on the man, then scanning towards the bottom of the advertisement people may finally read the statement, only then will the ad make sense. This advertisement is not so overloaded or extreme that it stresses people out or confuses them. The winter theme works together to show the eight hours of ice, wind, and freedom (Procter & Gamble 1). Especially, when people in the advertisement are skiing, bobsledding, climbing, or sitting in a hot tub during the middle of
There is something catchy when Isaiah Mustafa tells us about becoming a man, like when he is speaking to the consumers in the Old Spice commercial. Pathos, Ethos, and Logos are used in the Old Spice commercial by evoking the emotional appeal, presenting good character, and by logical reasoning. These three things are what makes the perfect commercial or an ad. It tries to persuade people into buying their product, maybe by an emotional appeal or persuasion. They will even tell you that the viewers are wrong and that a person is missing out, because the people do not own their product. In this commercial by Old Spice, they are trying to sell their body wash. Isaiah Mustafa uses words like “Be a man like me, by using an Old Spice body wash.” By saying that quote from https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=owGykVbfgUE it tells us he will be trying to persuade us from the start.
In the old spice commercial, the brand is showing that men are just brainless robots and the women are just hyper-sexual individuals. The setting of the commercial is in a nightclub where women are dress in provocative clothes that come off like they are looking for sexual intention from the men. Men are
The advertisement being analyzed is an Old Spice commercial that was played on TV stations in the year 2010. The ad is designed appropriately for the advancement of the use of Old Spice body wash by men. It is a question ad that acknowledges the need for men not only to look good, but also smell sweet in an appealing way for ladies. Human hygiene has been a critical subject in civilization. In the 18th-century men were not keen on their grooming since it was believed that a man had to go out of his way to fend for his family. Most times men did not take it upon themselves to smell nice, but this perception has changed. The contemporary man has to mind his scent and the advertisement on Old Spice attempts to attract men into embracing the fragrance of their body wash. .
The main picture in the advertisement is one of an older man that appears to be a doctor. The picture has the man relaxing while holding a cigarette and correlates directly with the main caption of the advertisement. The picture conveys the message that sophisticated and intelligent people smoke Camel cigarettes. The picture also implies that Camel cigarettes are the healthiest cigarettes because doctors smoke this brand of cigarettes and doctors understand what the best is for their health. Another image in the advertisement is a woman smiling while holding a cigarette. This image correlates with the main image by appealing to the sophisticated and classy look. It shows that classy women also smoke Camel cigarettes. The picture includes a T on the woman’s face. This T is used to add another aspect to the message expressed in the text beside it. Lastly, the advertisement has an image of the product to show customers what the product is and what to look for when they are shopping. When a person sees the product in the store, it subliminally connects the person to the
Advertisements have been utilized for many years to sell products. The very popular company Old Spice, who is one of the top men’s hygienic production companies, is well known for their series of humorous advertising campaigns that uses references to the ideals of what a stereotypical masculine man is supposed to be characterized as. The Old Spice commercial, “The Man Your Man Could Smell Like” that first appeared during the Superbowl in 2010, illustrates that the company successfully utilizes the influence of humor, gender stereotypes, and ethos and pathos to connect emotionally with the audience and persuades men to start using Old Spice Red Zone body wash so that insecure men can become more of a masculine man that females will desire.
The two concepts that I am going to talk about are the master trait and women as a minority group. According to our textbook, the master trait is defined as cutting across all other identities in life. We are always female or male at the end of the day. In the Tide commercial, as viewers we see how separate men are to women. A once enjoyable party turns into a charade that depicts women as happy go lucky to do house work. Although the master trait is something that is a normality to our society, when we solely view someone as male or female, we impose gender stereotypes that shouldn 't continue to exist. We see the negative connotations of gender enforced stereotypes when it comes to the Old Spice commercial. The glamorized depiction of the man makes it seem like the fairy tale we dreamed of is achievable just by using Old Spice. The second concept of women being a minority group comes into play in both commercials because women are on the back burner for both. Yes, the Tide commercial depicted the happenings of Kelly Ripa’s dinner party but as a whole women were still the minority because of the oppressed overtones within. In the Old Spice commercial, women play an invisible role because we aren’t seen at all in the commercial but it is more geared to us. Since we are “less stronger” than men, we need to get someone who all around suits us according to the
The Old Spice Campaign that I chose is a one-sided message is the communications in which only positive attributes or benefits of a product or service are presented. The message in the ad is one-sided because it is only mentioning the positive aspects of the deodorant, it does not have any negative aspects on the ad. Old Spice advertisements always has a male presence, and it is usually a famous person. They usually have different types of male celebrities ranging from actors to athletes. Old Spice uses the humor appeal to get their message across to their target market. In their advertisements there is always something that stands out to appeal to the consumers. With this campaign it centers on the Old Spice Man answering questions from the viewers, and doing different activities, being different places and having costumes on. The ending of the commercial always has a surprise ending leaving the viewer astonished. The campaign appeals to the humor appeal because it uses humor, but not too much so that consumers can pay attention to the product that is being advertised. On the Old Spice YouTube channel for the commercial in the description box it says “We’re not saying this body wash will make your man smell like a romantic millionaire jet fighter pilot, but we are sure insinuating it”, which is appealing to humor because you know that your man is not going to smell like it, but are suggesting that they would
The Paco Rabanne Invictus fragrance for men advert, published in 2013, seems to portray how a modern male should appear: strong, muscular, and heavily tattooed while women are perceived as relationship-oriented, and eye-candies: a lightweight drapery hides their private parts whilst revealing their forms. Thus, it reinforces gender stereotypes. As Buying Into Sexy points out sex sells, and people tend to be heavily exposed to adds as well as “music videos that feature plenty of sexual innuendo”. That is why humongous corporations “(create) a certain environment of images that we grow up in and that we become used to (in order to) shape what we know and what we understand about the world”, states Justin Lewis in Mickey Mouse Monopoly. So, how is the ideology of masculinity represented throughout this ad? The warrior-esque man is physically desirable, and irresistible to women. Even though the audiences are aware of the existed hyperbole, they might focus on the experienced feelings of smelling good.
In the advertisement put out by the R.J. Reynolds Company showcasing its Camel cigarettes, the attempt is made to seduce the customers into believing that it is hip and cool to smoke cigarettes. The first thing you notice in this particular advertisement is the large puffy red Afro donned by the man perfectly centered in the ad. He seems to be a throwback to the seventies when there was a collective feeling of freedom and invincibility enjoyed by the youth growing up in that era. It seem this man is living a surreal world full of bliss and happiness. His long smooth sideburns, small golden sunglasses tinted with a fresh color of purple, and attention-grabbing starred blue suede shirt with the leather pul...
Since I was a little girl, my mother always made it clear that a husband was unobtainable if a woman could not properly tend to his needs. I learned how to cook, how to clean, how to do laundry, and I even learned how to take care of my younger siblings all because, according to my mother, these responsibilities were a woman’s duty; it was her job. For centuries, this has been the mindset of every woman, which has been passed down from generation to generation. A stereotype that has influenced a culture and defined a human being. In this 1930’s Kellogg’s PEP Cereal advertisement we witness yet another stereotype defining women into this sexist housewife persona. Through the use of clothing and appearance, text and audience the ad conveys a
Now when I first seen the advertisement I wasn’t shocked because I knew that it was a current day ad. I also know knew the that the roles of each gender was changed because the woman was relaxing on the sofa while the man was doing chores; and I know it is biased to say that men can’t clean up their home while there girlfriend or wife portrays a since of the male role it takes away from his masculinity. So as a little experiment I had showed my mom, dad, and grandparents the two advertisements to get a few of their opinions on the ads and it was exactly what I expected, the woman which was my mother and grandmother didn’t see nothing wrong with ad 1 where the man was cleaning while the female was kicking back reading a newspaper. However my grandma did say that it was funny to see a man cleaning up the house while the woman just chills, she also felt like the female should have been vacuuming the floor while the male lounge and read the newspaper. That was very comprehending for me to hear because my grandma is sixty-five years old and was born in the late 40s, whereas my mom was born in the late 60s so I know the gender roles has changed within two centuries that’s why there views
Marlboro is currently one of biggest cigarette distributer in the world. Originally, Marlboro was targeted towards women with the slogan “Mild As May” Campaign until Philip Morris repositioned Marlboro at 1950, with the objective of attracting a wide target audience of American men to save their failing brand. The company began to advertise towards men because they wanted to increase customer while hoping to increase their profits. Therefore, in order to attract their targeted audience, Leo Burnett took the initiative to design the new brand image in which they use an American symbol, the cowboy. The Marlboro Man campaign was not successful merely because of the cigarettes that it advertised but instead, “Marlboro Man” represented the ways in which white males defined their status in American society. The “Marlboro Man” transformed from an advertising campaign to a representation of white American men.
