In Frank Romero's mural "Going to the Olympics," the artist delineates life in Los Angeles through bursting colors and defined shapes. In the image I see cars, hearts, palm trees, a good year blimp, horses, two men wrestling, a stamp and an iron. The choice of colors the author uses is very fun and pleasing to the eye.The color that I believe dominates the entire mural is the color blue. Each image in this mural has many possible meanings. The cars, in my opinion, symbolizes the importance of cars and transportation on people and it is demonstrated by the beautifully colored hearts. In the mural we see several cars with a heart placed above it. The mood is definitely set by the choice of colors.Romero uses a warm and inviting color palette. The color of the hearts placed above the cars remind me of a rainbow and a rainbow to me means happiness. The mural gives out an aura of happiness and most of all love. Here in LA we use cars to go on adventures with the ones we love, to go to work, or to just distract ourselves and it's essential to our everyday lives. The fact that Romero chooses to place the mural in a freeway where cars come and go all day is astounding. Where he chooses to place the mural might infer his feelings towards the city's car culture. He stands proud against his work and his love for our cars. The location of the mural can deliver a message of happiness to anyone that passes by it. In 2007 Romero's mural was painted over by some Caltrans work crew. Frank Romero filed a lawsuit against the work crew for painting over his mural without his consent. In the past the mural had been defaced by some taggers but had been restored by Romero. Because of the taggers writing over the mural, the city decided to cover it with solid coats of gray in order to "save it." Romero had not been given notice of the 1980 state law protecting artist "moral rights" even though he should have. The significance to Romero is that this was a mural that probably represented him as an artist and it was taken away so suddenly without any consent. This was a gift from Romero to the city and it was taken away, upsetting the people of LA since it was something nice to look at. Wayne, transforms this painting into a three dimensional abstract piece of art. The focal point of the painting are the figures that look like letters and numbers that are in the front of the piece of art. This is where your eyes expend more time, also sometimes forgiving the background. The way the artist is trying to present this piece is showing happiness, excitement, and dreams. Happiness because he transmits with the bright colours. After probably 15 minutes on front of the painting I can feel that the artist tries to show his happiness, but in serene calm. The excitement that he presents with the letters, numbers and figures is a signal that he feels anxious about what the future is going to bring. In “Football Dreams” by Jacqueline Woodson, the message that any dream can come true if you put the work in is supported by the structure of the poem. The structural elements that are most impactful are repetition and the title. While she talks about her father’s dreams at the beginning. Later towards the end of the poem, she starts to explain how they came true. “My father dreamed football dreams, and woke up to a scholarship at Ohio State University” (10-12). The poem “Moco Limping” by David Nova Monreal is about a man who has very high hopes for his dog. He wants him to be heroic and a leader but is disappointed when he doesn’t live up to those standards. He thinks his dog is clumsy and stupid. The poem “Oranges” by Gary Soto is about a boy who was walking with the girl he had a crush on down to a drugstore. He spends a nickel and an orange to buy her chocolates. These poems, “Moco Limping” and “Oranges” have different tones that the authors expressed using different word choice in the beginning of the poems, but become similar at the end.
Taffler, a character of Timothy Findley's book, The Wars, is a multi-decorated soldier who many people, such as his fellow soldier and the country he fights for, sees him a hero. On the other hand, the poem A.E Housman created "To an Athlete Dying Young" talks about an athlete who died young and offers a different perspective on dying. According to the speaker of the poem, the athlete is “a smart lad” for dying while being in the spotlight (9). The definition of heroism is when a person shows bravery. The artist Leo Tanguman painted morbid murals within the walls of the Denver airport. The scenes signify death and rebirth. One mural shows dead women, destruction of our world, and a little girl with a Mayan tablet representing the 2012 doomsday which is the phase of rebirth. Secondly, another portrays a military figure with a gas mask, gun and a sword. The figure is stabbing a dove which symbolizes peace. Furthermore, painted are weeping women surrounded by deceased girls holding lifeless infants behind the military figure. A smog or gas seems to engulf them along with dead children. Even more, a third painting shows children from all over the world giving weapons to a German boy who is molding them into an uncertain object showing there is no longer a need for weapons in a New World. In addition, the military man is dead with 2 doves above him signifying such peace that has been brought. The final image is of a man in the middle signifying Jesus. I would like to investigate the many struggles of women, whether it be race that differentiates them or an event that any woman could experience that brings them together. Beauty is not easily defined, and women everywhere struggle with not only pleasing the people around them, but themselves. In the film, symbolism was everywhere. In the beginning of the film, the pictures of the city were in black and white and dull shades, giving the city a gloomy look. The camera angles made the cars in the city appear tiny, and the buildings appear very large to symbolize how small everything was amongst the city. The interiors of the office buildings and the panic symbolized that there was no way out. The soundtrack of the film was symbolic to the tension of the film. The darkness of visual composition of the lighting in the film, symbolized the darkness of the human nature in the story.
The first two images that stand out for me are in the first stanza. “In Los Angeles I grew up watching The Three Stooges,The Little Rascals, Speed Racer, and the Godzilla movies.” (Suarez,2007) Unfortunately, the image of all of this is not one of imagination. I grew up watching all four of the shows listed, The Three Stooges,The Little Rascals, Speed Racer, and the Godzilla movies. I also spent a lot of my childhood in Southern California (Pomona) which is not very far from Los Angeles. In all honesty, these were great times with great memories. However, as I said, this is real life reading.

It shows just how depraved, violent and absolutely terrifying humans can easily become when put into situations without consequences. Romero’s film is dredged in cynicism towards the modern American Dream, the way he deals with symbolism towards how “just” the American system is during battles and war, and how incredibly messed up our generalized view on racism and the ever ongoing struggle for certain ethnic groups to survive is. “The negativity of the characters extends, in fact, into every facet of their lives; indeed, the film implies the deepest denial of the goodness of effectiveness of every facet of human life in general. Every kind of human relationship is ridiculed or negated in the film.” 4
This darkly satiric poem is about cultural imperialism. Dawe uses an extended metaphor: the mother is America and the child represents a younger, developing nation, which is slowly being imbued with American value systems. The figure of a mother becomes synonymous with the United States. Even this most basic of human relationships has been perverted by the consumer culture. The poem begins with the seemingly positive statement of fact 'She loves him ...’. The punctuation however creates a feeling of unease, that all is not as it seems, that there is a subtext that qualifies this apparently natural emotional attachment. From the outset it is established that the child has no real choice, that he must accept the 'beneficence of that motherhood', that the nature of relationships will always be one where the more powerful figure exerts control over the less developed, weaker being. The verb 'beamed' suggests powerful sunlight, the emotional power of the dominant person: the mother. The stanza concludes with a rhetorical question, as if undeniably the child must accept the mother's gift of love. Dawe then moves on to examine the nature of that form of maternal love. The second stanza deals with the way that the mother comforts the child, 'Shoosh ... shoosh ... whenever a vague passing spasm of loss troubles him'. The alliterative description of her 'fat friendly features' suggests comfort and warmth. In this world pain is repressed, real emotion pacified, in order to maintain the illusion that the world is perfect. One must not question the wisdom of the omnipotent mother figure. Looking at landscape art, especially when painted by one of the masters, many have undoubtedly pondered: what would it be like to live there? Shapes and attention to detail are, of course, important in a painting. However, it is color that draws the eye and inspires the heart. Oscar Wilde, an Irish poet and dramatist, spoke well of this when he noted that, “Mere color, unspoiled by meaning, and unallied with definite form, can speak to the soul in a thousand different ways. (qtd in “color”)”. Vincent Ward had a similar understanding of this impact when, in 1998, he directed the movie What Dreams May Come. Looking at this film, one can easily imagine being inside a living painting. The use of color to emphasize the emotional state of a character or event is common in films; nevertheless, Director Ward goes even farther in using color to represent the actual characters themselves. Red is the shade chosen to signify Annie and likewise, blue is used for Chris. Both of these, as will be shown, are accurate in defining these fictitious people. However, it is the profound use of purple in this film that is the true focal point. When mixing red and blue paint, one would find that, after being mixed, they cannot be separated. Likewise, this is true of the life and love these characters build and share. Purple represents the many ways in which Chris and Annie are melded, and joined.

With his immense influence in El Salvador, he was able to encourage the church and its people to fight for justice, equality, and human rights for all. His and the churches actions displayed a sense of liberation theology. They saw the situation, assessed it, and then judged what needed to be done. The actions that the church raised served as critical actions towards the peoples struggle for what is right, and although justice was not fully fulfilled the footstones were set for a great upcoming. The church along with Romero served as a great authority towards bringing Gods kingdom here on earth. The struggle for social justice was a critical factor of how the church is a community of all people, and how everyone deserves an equal potential at life without obstacles.
Making difficult decisions show up in life more often than realized. These choices can alter a person’s life in good and bad ways. “The Bicycle” by Jillian Horton is a story that focuses on a young talented pianist named Hannah. Throughout the story Hannah deals with the strict teachings of her Tante Rose, which leads her to make ironic decisions. Similarly, in the story “Lather and Nothing Else” by Hernando Tellez, the barber undergoes a dilemma in which he must consider his moral values before making his final decision. Both stories have a protagonist that face conflicts which lead to difficult decision making, and in the end leads the characters to discover themselves. In both stories the authors use the literary devices theme, irony and symbolism to compare and contrast the main ideas.
‘The Falling Soldier’ is one of many poems by Duffy which deals with the subject of human mortality. Duffy expresses what could have been over a harsh reality; this is characteristic of her as also seen in ‘Last Post’ and ‘Passing Bells’ which both seem to be largely influenced by poet peer Wilfred Owen’s personal experiences of war. In the ‘The Falling Soldier’ Duffy paradoxically captures the essence of Robert Capa’s famous photograph of a man falling after being shot during the Spanish Civil War (1936). She employs the form of an impersonal narrative voice, using second person to question the possibilities, to explore the tragic and cyclical nature of war. The futile reality of war contrasts to her central theme in ‘The Bees’ anthology of bees symbolising the grace left in humanity.
