Daniel Goleman is the best selling author Emotional Intelligence. One time while visiting Google he gave a speech to the employees and one point came across as very important. Goleman said that while technological places might not explicitly value soft skills, such as empathy or other aspects of emotional intelligence, it is what implicitly makes people effective in whatever they do for a living. This is especially true for Google and other companies like it where the IQ of all the employees is very close. Daniel Goleman’s key aspects in his argument were the six differences in succeeding in technology companies, the differences in the brain, and managing emotions. He said these people think about how they can improve performance by making devices better, faster, quicker, and stronger. He reasons that their drive is because of high internal standards. The second difference is impact or influence. He states that this is being able to make persuasive arguments and hold your own in a debate. Another key in this aspect is being able to tailor your presentation to the audience. The presenter needs to be able to keep the attention of the audience when the daze off by changing their attention over to something else by telling a story. The third and fourth differences are closely related. They are both cognitive abilities rather than emotional intelligence like the first two. The third difference is conceptual thinking. Conceptual thinking is being able to pick up on data and patterns to make connections. These connections are then used to realize what needs to be done. The forth fourth difference is analysis. This is breaking down problems systematically, anticipating obstacles, and drawing logical conclusions. Finally, there are the final two differences which are both also emotional intelligence. The first is taking on challenges without being told. This also includes being persistent in tackling obstacles. Then the final is being self confident which is a very key aspect. Everyday humans have different situations they go through. Our actions, or solutions to the situations determines on our thought process and even our feelings. For example, you wake up on the wrong side of the bed and are just not having a good day. You are walking down the sidewalk on a very scolding day and you are hot and very irritable. you are holding an open lid ice water cup, and someone bumps into you and spills it on you. Your immediate emotion following that will most likely be anger, frustration, maybe even sadness. But what if you were having a good day earlier that day, and the same thing happens. You would not be as angry because your emotions built up throughout the day have not been as negative. That is an example of emotional intelligence.
The theory of emotional intelligence is relatively new, however the psychological theory has become prevalent and many entities have adapted the principles of this theory in order to enhance relations within the professional environment as well as increase performance which ultimately lead to a positive place of work. Goleman and Cherniss (2001) postulates that emotional competencies are learned abilities. Social awareness or skill at managing relationships does not guarantee the mastery of the additional learning required to handle a customer adeptly or to resolve a conflict. It only prognosticates that we have the potential to become skilled in these competencies.
(2013) separated emotional intelligence into four domains, self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship management (pp. 30, 38). These domains are then broken into two competencies. Self-awareness, the understanding of one 's emotions and being clear about one 's purpose, and self-management, the focused drive and emotional self-control, make up the personal competence (pp. 39, 45-46). While social awareness, or empathy and service, and relationship management, the handling of other people 's emotions, make up the social competence (pp. 39, 48, 51). These emotional intelligence competencies are not innate talents, but learned abilities, each of which contribute to making leaders more resonant and effective (p. 38). In looking at emotional intelligence, this is not a new concept. It can be traced back to Edward Thorndike study of social intelligence (Cartwright & Pappas, 2008). This type of intelligence is defined in “the ability to understand and manage people” along with taking this ability and applying it to oneself (Cartwright & Pappas, 2008, p. 152). The concept of emotions of how one deals with these internally and externally with others was discovered but it was difficult to measure (Bradberry & Su, 2006).
The ability to express and control our own emotions is vital for our survival in society and the work place but so is our ability to understand, interpret, and respond to the emotions of others. Salovey and Mayer proposed a model that identified four different factors of emotional intelligence (Cherry, 2015).
The first topic that I want to touch on is the idea of academic intelligence having little to do with emotional life. Goleman states that, “Emotional intelligence is the ability to motivate oneself, persist in the face of frustrations, regulate one’s moods and keep distress from swamping the ability to think.” I feel that academic intelligence gives you no preparation for the turmoil and opportunities that life brings. The funny thing is that our schools and our culture are still fixated on our academic abilities. Throughout the years we have seen significant changes in “Corporate America,” changes that have seriously impacted those in the workplace and consumers as well. It is a dog eat dog world out there due to the economic stresses of today. This daily struggle to survive in the workplace has affected the lives of everyone involved as interpersonal skills are declining especially among company executives. Are academic institutions to blame for this obvious lack of concern for others in the workplace? It has been suggested in the following studies that higher level education is lacking in regard to the study of emotional intelligence and empathy within their business leadership programs. Empathy is defined as, “the feeling that you understand and share another person's experiences and emotions: the ability to share someone else's feelings,” (Merriam-Webster, 2014). Emotional intelligence and empathy will be observed throughout this paper as a result of two separate studies, each were conducted with regard to leadership. Please note that the first article focuses on these issues through a secularist worldview while the second article embraces a Christian worldview. Although the issues are the same, the methodologies are somewhat different.

This concept was firstly developed by two American university professors, John Mayer and Peter Salovey (1990) and they concluded that, people with high emotional quotient are supposed to learn more quickly due to their abilities. Another psycologist named Daniel Goleman (1995) extended the theory and also made it well-known. In his articles and books, he argued that people with high emotional quotient do better than those with low emotional quotient. In this essay, it will be argued that high emotional intelligence can influence work performance positively to a relatively high extent. Both benefits and limitations of a high level of EI in the workplace will be discussed and a conclusion will be drawn at the end of this essay.
An individual’s ability to control and express their emotions is just as important as his/her ability to respond, understand, and interpret the emotions of others. The ability to do both of these things is emotional intelligence, which, it has been argued, is just as important if not more important than IQ (Cassady & Eissa, 2011). Emotional intelligence refers to one’s ability to perceive emotions, control them, and evaluate them. While some psychologists argue that it is innate, others claim that it is possible to learn and strengthen it. Academically, it has been referred to as social intelligence sub-set. This involves an individual’s ability to monitor their emotions and feelings, as well as those of others, and to differentiate them in a manner that allows the individuals to integrate them in their actions and thoughts (Cassady & Eissa, 2011).
