Emotional Intelligence by Daniel Goleman
In the book Emotional Intelligence by Daniel Goleman, the central thesis that he tries to point out is that emotional intelligence may be more important than I.Q. in determining a person’s well being and success in life. At first I didn’t know what Goleman was talking about when he said emotional intelligence, but after reading the book I have to say that I agree completely with Goleman. One reason for my acceptance of Goleman's theory is that academic intelligence has little to do with emotional life. To me, emotions can be just as intelligent as your I.Q. In this essay I hope to provide sufficient evidence to show why I agree with Goleman’s thesis on emotional intelligence.
The first topic that I want to touch on is the idea of academic intelligence having little to do with emotional life. Goleman states that, “Emotional intelligence is the ability to motivate oneself, persist in the face of frustrations, regulate one’s moods and keep distress from swamping the ability to think.” I feel that academic intelligence gives you no preparation for the turmoil and opportunities that life brings. The funny thing is that our schools and our culture are still fixated on our academic abilities. Emotional intelligence is the ability to identify and manage individual’s emotions. Also one should be able to recognize other people emotions to help improve their life. Goleman shares five elements to the theory, which are self-regulation, awareness of your own feelings, motivation, empathy, and social skills. Having self-regulation gives people the ability to recover form emotional distress and manage one’s emotion. Motivation helps one stay in the task they want to fulfill. Empathy is the awareness of what others are feeling and social skills is the ability to cooperate with people. All of the elements are used to make individuals to be a better person, to complete their goals and bring others on track. This can bring great change to an individual at any given moment in their life and help them develop as a better

With the increase in use and the constant advancement of features and interactive applications on phones, there is a growing addiction to using cell phones at all times – even when it can be dangerous. The greatest danger is using a cell phone to text while driving. The statistics are frightening. The United States Department of Transportation notes, “Cell phones are involved in 1.6 million auto crashes each year that cause a half million injuries and take 6,000 lives.” A simple three word text and those couple seconds to type it is not worth losing your whole life. Our society is affected greatly by the use of cellphones in such ways as; sleep deprivation, communication, and Distraction. Today’s society accepted phones so fast and easily, that most of the things that can harm us, are actually some of our social norms that we don’t even realize we are doing. Cell phones can have effects on the way people think and act, their interactions with people in society, and the amount information people retain from the direct result of multi-tasking. Cell phones are a very important asset to people, and good resources of information, but they can have negative effects on people such as depression, anxiety, and addiction to the use of the cell phone. Distractions from cell phone use have also been linked to many motor vehicle accidents as well. Late Adulthood comes with a great number of things, which typically simply build on what was discovered in Adulthood. The ideal remaining relevant in society is in the forefront; while traditional work may end volunteerism picks up (Berger, 2014). Those that have the ability to work do so in order to maintain social relationships fighting the isolation, and loneliness that is a major problem. Speaking with my grandmother she talked about barriers she has faced throughout the aging process to include; coping in retirement, loss of friends, and the idea of becoming frail.

Cellular phones are the world’s most popular mobile device used by Americans today. What many Americans fail to realize are the negative impacts cell phones may have on someone. Cell phones are distracting, they can cause benign tumors and cancer, can used for cyber bullying, spread germs, and viruses, and are highly addictive. Indeed, billions of people all over the world use cell phones. Many of those people do not realize how dangerous cell phones really are.
Cell phones are progressively becoming more accessible and reliable as days go by in such a way that creates a safer and protected environment around us. The many ways and situations one can use a cell phone is becoming more free and diverse than what phones were intentionally made for, that is, to communicate through speech. Cell phones have become an anytime, anywhere tool used for texting, taking pictures, recording videos, making video calls, saving files such as a presentation, and many other things such as listening to music or playing games (Ling 22).
These articles have proven that emotional intelligence results in stronger relationships, success in school and eventually the ability for adolescents to achieve their future careers and personal goals. An important lesson learned from these articles is that emotional intelligence is an important quality to have in life, not only to succeed academically but to improve a person’s overall happiness. Although some believe that emotional intelligence and academic achievement are not associated with each other, these articles prove otherwise. The ability to adapt feelings, to problem solve, and to manage emotional feelings has been proven to lead to higher GPAs. Unfortunately students experience an abundance of stressors beyond school work, therefore it is important for students to understand how to cope with these life situations as they can consume their daily thought processes and affect their GPA’s. This is why educating adolescents to be successful in their future requires education that fosters both academic and emotional intelligence abilities. Not only can this improve academic abilities, but it can also improve the overall happiness of a person. Future research should test to see how emotional intelligence affects people of different studies and different personalities so that educators can have different strategies for different people. This is important because in one of my articles it seems that science students have a lower emotional intelligence than art students. Therefore, emotional intelligence characteristics should be taught to students in this major as it is proven to have a bigger impact on their academic achievement.After this debate I have learned a lot about emotional intelligence and its importance to students academic success. As a future educator, I would like to see my students succeed and I believe implementing emotional
