Integrity By: Staff Sergeant Joshua Glober There are a lot of things that could be said about integrity. Integrity is the foundation of our character. It influences our actions and it forms the basis of how others perceive us. This essay will discuss integrity: what it is, what it is not and how to live a life of integrity. According to Merriam-Webster, integrity is defined simply as the quality of being honest and fair (Integrity). But there is much more that can said about what integrity truly means. Integrity in its very nature is intended to be a guiding moral force in our lives which serves to keep us on the straight and narrow. It helps us to not only discern right and wrong, but it also goes a step further and encourages us to make the right decisions when faced with difficult situations. Integrity as it relates to our character means always being true to what one believes to be morally right, even when it is difficult to do. When integrity is compromised, the effects can be severe and long lasting. Compromised integrity can affect everyone around you and even yourself. When a person’s integrity comes to question, everything that that person does is now second guessed and scrutinized. It becomes very difficult if not impossible for trust in that individual to be regained. Once trust is gone, the relationship that you once had with that person ceases to exist. There are many reasons that a person may choose to disregard their integrity in a given situation. One might be that they feel as though they don’t have a choice in the matter. They may feel that perhaps not being honest or forthcoming may be in the best interest of the particular situation. Although he botched some of his tests, he also exceeded some of the trials. His integrity helped him throughout all the challenges he faced. Due to the all the tests that were given he had to face them all. They were set to an ingenious mark on the King. The king’s test was to prove and see if he was conscientious, robust, and committed.

In the article “The Insufficiency of Honesty” by Stephen Carter, the author described that Integrity is a form of honesty, although honesty itself stand for something else. This is why he sees those two virtues as partly different . Carter realized this difference between complete truth and righteousness. Honesty is to tell the complete truth, but integrity is more about righteousness. Sometimes telling the truth could hurt somebody’s feelings which could be a disaster. “The truth hurts”, but having integrity means to not only be a truthful person, but one with moral values, being able to put other’s first and being able to keep promise. In the essay “The Rules about the Rules,” Carter sets forth his views on integrity. Throughout this essay, he explains to readers the three rules of integrity. The first step is the difficult process of discerning one’s deepest understanding of right and wrong. The second step is knowing what one believes. This means one knows and understands what is right from wrong and puts what is right into effect. Last but not least, the third and most important step is the person must be willing to say that he or she is acting upon what he or she has decided what is right. Carter believes integrity is a moral virtue that should be consistently acted upon throughout readers’ lives.
Integrity is a topic that people are excited to talk about. It seems to be a commodity that is in short supply. I feel that this is because integrity is a more complex matter then honesty. It takes more work to conduct yourself with integrity then simple honesty. Carter says that integrity requires three things. First you have to be able to discern between wrong and right. Second you have to act on what you discern. Lastly, you must be able to say that you are acting on your understanding of right and wrong (Carter 74). In my opinion, these steps required a person truly consider a situation and ensures that person’s integrity is steadfast and trustworthy. Without these steps “a person may be entirely honest without ever engaging in the hard work of discernment that integrity requires” (Carter 74).
Integrity to me means going above and beyond with everything I do. I think this will fuel good grades and completion of assignments. Having good integrity also came with some confidence, because I had to do more and go outside of the crowd. I did and do more than everyone else, that made me fell a lot more confident about my actions. Confidence has pushed me to make suggestions that I otherwise wouldn't.
Integrity is an idea that has been discussed by individuals with a verbal acuity far beyond anything I could ever hope for. With that in mind, I will not delve deeply or poetically into what integrity is or should mean. However, I will simplify the meaning of integrity; at the core, integrity boils down to doing what is right even if nobody is watching. See a piece of trash on the ground and nobody is around...pick it up. Driving down the road with no cops in sight...drive the speed limit. Arrive at a tollbooth and no attendant is working…pay the toll. An applicant is not readily available to sign a form for enlistment…track them down and ensure they sign it. I could write examples until infinity becomes paltry in comparison, yet I am sure I have made my point clearly; the greater good must be upheld regardless of who is there to ensure it is happening. It seems obvious that integrity should be a trait every individual is hardwired with from birth. However, integrity is a thankless trait; nobody is around after all. An individual cannot expect someone to clap, to smile, to thank them, to do anything actually. By definition, integrity should be something that is followed through with simply because an individual wishes to do what is correct, not because they expect accolades of any sort.
...rity, as with as much in life, involves a system of interconnected rights and responsibilities that reflect our mutual dependence upon one another. The success of our individual efforts in this course, as with so much in life, depends on all of us conscientiously exercising our rights and living up to our responsibilities. And the failure of any of us--even just one of us--to do what is required will diminish, however slightly, the opportunity for the rest to achieve their goals. That is why it's essential for all of us in this class to practice academic integrity, n both senses of the word practice. For practice today will lay a solid foundation for practice tomorrow, and the day after that, and the day after that, so that through daily practice integrity will come to woven throughout the fabric of our lives, and thus through at least a part of the fabric of society.
Integrity is how somebody lives their life. In this life we live, we face choices every day that only we can answer. We dictate how we run our own lives, and they way we run them defines us. Integrity is doing the right thing versus the wrong thing. People, if nothing else, can always have their pride, their integrity. It is something that means a lot to some people and then nothing to others. The ones who value their integrity highly are the good people in this world, and the opposite is true for those who do not value their integrity.
To prosper as individuals, it is essential to control a sense of honesty, in simple hopes of maintaining humane, respectable standards and boundaries. This honesty, however, is often asked of extension, now presumed to mature into a component well known as integrity. Learning, consequently, is inhabited through these expectations of strict dedication and independence. And although learning is accomplished abundantly, there is only a certain extent of upholding this righteous behavior. Though teachers, bosses, parents, or companions may be satisfied with the efforts of their lesser, they fail to realize that the request of integrity has not been fulfilled. Integrity, being the unflawed ability to completely dedicate one’s personally believed morals is a specific, well-rounded trait, difficult to be entirely possessed by a faulty being.
Integrity is the quality of being honest. When you are honest about something or a certain situation you are considered a person of integrity. Also when you have integrity you have strong moral principles. When you have strong moral principles you know what is right and what is wrong. “Having integrity means doing the right thing in a reliable way. It's a personality trait that we admire, since it means a person has a moral compass that doesn't waver. It literally means having "wholeness" of character, just as an integer is a "whole number" with no fractions.” Furthermore, having integrity is a quality that many strive to have because it often means that you are a good person.
The term “ethics” refers to an external set of rules that have been established by an institution or organization, for example, a university, and the members are expected to follow them. On the other hand, integrity refers to an individuals’ internal set of principles that guides their actions and behavior (Czimbal and Brooks n.p.). As a rule, people are usually rewarded when they follow ethical codes of conduct by an external committee or board that monitors their behavior. For a person of high integrity, the benefits are usually intrinsic. Moreover, such individuals always make the right decisions even when they are not being watched. Therefore, this feature of character is often influenced by a person’s upbringing. In
Integrity is one of the most important characteristics every individual should possess no matter what position. I believe integrity is one that is non-negotiable and should never be compromised. To me, if you are willing to compromise your integrity then you are willing to compromise the mission. As a leader, having integrity in your personal and professional life provides your peers with a presence of consistency in not only what you say but also in what you do. Without integrity among the team and within the organization, achievement of trust and mission accomplishment becomes inept.
