An Educational Philosophy

Many times, when a person chooses a career, they select one in which they will make the most money, have the best benefits, or bring the most prestige. Years later, they find that they have made the wrong decision and search for a more fulfilling career. I feel that I am one of the lucky few who have found a truly fulfilling career. Teaching combines two things that I love, school and children. I also feel that I am making an important contribution to society, by teaching its children to become model citizens.

My journey to become a teacher started early in my life. I have always loved school or any learning environment. As each summer came to a close I would look forward in anticipation of the new school year. I would enjoy preparing for the first day and all the nervousness that it brought. All of my “first day fears” were calmed by caring teachers.

On the road to becoming a teacher, I encountered many inspiring models of what a true teacher should be. But none inspired me as much as my mother. My mother, a high school English teacher, possesses all of the characteristics of a great teacher. She is very professional, knowledgeable of her subject, and most importantly, she cares about her students in and out of the classroom. When I told my parents my decision to become a teacher, both were very happy. but, my mother was excited that I had discovered the joys of teaching for myself.

I had discovered the joys of teaching, after working with a program called Energy Express Americorps. This 6 week reading and nutrition program, is designed to help under privileged students with their reading and nutritional needs. ...ive learning is a type of instruction in which students work in small heterogeneous groups and receive rewards based on group outcome. Cooperative learning helps eliminate the competitive environment of the classroom and encourages students to work together towards a group goal. I believe that I have ability to combine the aspects of progressivism, behaviorism, and cooperative learning to make my classroom an effective learning environment

I look forward, to beginning my career as a teacher. I feel that my love for children and learning combined with the education I am receiving makes me feel confident that I can help children learn the basic skills needed to thrive in our society.

When I think about becoming a teacher, I think about how I can make the world a better place. I know I can’t do everything to change the world, but I can do something, I can teach.
